This is really 2 stars for me but I’m giving it 3 stars because the author valiantly tried to mix Greek mythology with science-fiction. It didn’t work for me. There were several plot holes that left me dissatisfied. The main character was too whiny, immature, and impulsive. Granted, she’s just 16 or 17, but there wasn’t much common sense there. The two love interests were cute and flirty, but there weren’t sparks for me, the swoony teenage chemistry was missing. My favorite character was the cat/ mountain lion Bastet. |

What a cool way to introduce the subject of Greek mythology to young people! The story is interesting and engaging for young women especially. I wish our narrator wasn't SO perfect, since most young women aren't drop-dead gorgeous, but it's hard to avoid, I guess, when you're a goddess. The writing was for the most part solid, you can tell there's a good team of editors at work here. Beautiful descriptions of Athens (where I grew up!) Brava. |

A well written, thrilling, inspiring and truly original story! In Protogenesis, mythology and science fiction unite in the most unique way… you get caught between two worlds… and it all feels so real it’s just captivating! You get to experience an almost surreal adventure though the eyes of the 17-year-old American heroine, Helene. Through her writing, Alysia Helming makes you travel into an adventure which combines myths and Olympian Gods with modern technology, action with love, friendship and laughter with suspense. I like how Helming has created a variety of intriguing characters in an unpredictable plot and at the same time she builds up an inspiring story about this young girl who begins to experience her own metamorphosis as she discovers her true powers that had always been within her and evolves into a strong warrior woman! Protogenesis is an addictive story! Can’t wait for the next book to come out! |
A definite must-read that left me wanting to know more about this story! Protogenesis may seem to tap on the 'usual' themes of the YA genre, but it brings them together is such an intriguing yet subtle way that in the end fiction does becomes real - you might know what will happen (or think you do) , but you certainly don't know how it's going to happen! And that is exactly where I got hooked with Protogenesis and why I would definitely recommend it. The plot's fast pace that shifts from romance to adventure and mystery and even from everyday life to 'extraordinary' life, combined with the author's fresh writing style of dialogues and very accurate but not too many nor lengthy descriptions (be it locations, situations and even the characters) certainly makes Protogenesis way more than just your usual pleasant reading. And it's surely a highly promising start to a novel series that actually offers an original take on how mythology, culture and science intertwine, blurring the boundaries between what's fictional and what could be real - which in my opinion is exactly what a good book should do. |

The Greek Gods & Goddesses come to life in this thrilling YA book, that's perfect for adult readers too! Author Alysia Helming has creatively interwoven the perfect story of Greek mythology and modern day life. The main character Helene, faces many of the challenges that teens face today. When tragedy strikes, Helene shows just how resourceful and determined she can be. Once I picked up this book, I couldn't put it down! It was a delightful and engaging read from beginning to end. |

Protogenesis felt fresh despite relying on some plot tropes that have been overused in YA literature (the love triangle, the mysterious bad guys, the missing parent) and I think that is because is flows so well in terms of the writing and also the pacing. I was swept away, and long books like this usually make me distracted (though I do think it could be shorter in general.) The purple-eyed narrator avoids cliche and has some interesting and progressive views on being a teenage these days, including refreshingly direct outlooks on sex, dating, and feminism. Some of my favorite moments are what I'd call the book's most feminist--when the narrator carefully considers what SHE wants, what she's comfortable with. |

I'm sorry I really didn't like this authors style of writing. |
