This is a book from a action themed series involving a group of bounty hunters. I've read this one without having read the others and some threads have been difficult to follow, especially the ones involving the different couples in the team. But in essence it's not necessary to have read the previous books to completelly get in this one. As for the story I have had some trouble to completelly understand the plot, but this could be my fault, as action themed books are not my favorites. But the book has a well constructed plot, well developed and very well paced, with some absolutely frantic moments. There is an interesting romance, too, and some continuation of others initiated in the previous books. Overall the book is pretty interexting and recomendable. |
3.5 Stars. This is the third book in Thoma’s series about Holt Lasher and her crew. I found I like this slightly better than book two, but the first book is still my favorite. I do want to point out I highly recommend reading these books in order. The main group of characters is in all three books and you connect to them over the series. I just don’t think this book would work as well as a standalone. Holt is basically a real life superhero who owns a bounty hunter business. She is the boss, but has a very competent crew working for her. One of her best workers, mostly know as being part of the “muscle” of the crew, is Lola. When Holt’s family is threatened, it’s up to Lola to find out what is going on. What Lola doesn’t expect is to be attracted to a woman who might just be a suspect. These books are just pure action books. Of course each of them has a romance theme, but what you get with these books is an action packed ride. Not to be insulting but these are not the best written books, but they are always exciting and fun. And what I also enjoy, Holt does not like guns, so this isn’t just a shoot-um-up kind of book. It adds some imagination since things can’t easily be solved by guns. What I liked better about this book, than the previous one, was the romance. Considering this is an action book, there was more time for the romance than you would expect. I really liked Lola and Quinn and enjoyed how they got closer and closer together. The way this book ended it might be the last in the series. If so, this definitely was an enjoyable series. If you are looking for a fun action packed ride, with some romance, give these books a shot. If you are new to the series, definitely start with book 1, The Chase. |

The book seems to be written great however I was unable to finish. Not because the plot was boring or because of bad writing but because of the fact that the book seems to be a sequel. At first I had no idea it was supposed to be a sequel as its not stated anywhere and the summary of the book seems to be of a stand alone story. However, when I started reading the book, I got confused by the mention of all these characters in literally the first 2 or 3 paragraphs of the book, none of which had any prior introduction. As a first time reader that confused the hell outta me so I went on amazon to look up this author and lo and behold she has two other books and after reading their summaries, I see that each book is the main story of the other characters mentioned and also the beginning of this story. Now, if this book was trying to be a standalone, it failed because anyone who wanted to read it by itself would be as lost as I was by the mention of all these characters and of plot lines that they have no idea about if they didn't read the first book. If this book is supposed to be a part of the series however where u have to read everything, it also failed because how would first time readers like me know it's a sequel? It's not mentioned in the summary, it's not marked as a series and there's no "book 3" in the title or anything. I had to actively search the writers name and then read the summary of each of her books to see that it was the third book. The regular readers may be good with that but if there were a new reader out there they'd have no idea and it might turn them off. That's something that needs to be fixed. The author can mark them as a series as they seem to clearly be or write them more like standalones should be written whereas any character being introduced is done with the knowledge that some of the readers may not have read the first book. Or at least make it easier to tell the book is a part of a series by having similar book covers. All three books have wildly different covers, not to mention totally diffrrent titles that had literally nothing to do with each other. and that's why I had to read the summary of each to see if they were part of a sequel. Once this minute but huge issue is fix, I believe this book will do just fine. I cannot give a full review of the writing and plot as I am gonna have to read the first two books to even have any idea of what's going on. |
The Lashes series as I call it is part action comics and part lesbian romance. This one is no different. Written better than some other serial books out there I enjoyed reconnecting with old characters (even though I had forgotten most of them), and had a delightful hours reading this fast paced action book. You need to suspend disbelief in some parts of the book but I guess that's half the charm. It's well written and I enjoyed meeting new characters. Easily 4 stars. |
3.5 stars This is the fourth book by Thoma, and the third in a series that includes The Chase, and Pedal to the Metal. It is an action book featuring a team of skilled operatives who become embroiled in the dangerous investigation of a street gang in LA. The team is lead by the Amazonian Holt, and her girlfriend Isabelle. Their main attack dog is Lola, a tall and strong fighter with a basic education and a degree in loyalty and street smarts. Lola, desperate to prove herself again after a stuffup which resulted in another team member being shot, volunteers to go undercover to investigate the threats against the team. While working on campus in her new role as caretaker, she comes across the dazzling Quinn, a research neuroscientist. Dr Quinn Golden is working madly to write grants, teach and continue her research when she stumbles across the stunning Lola. The heat between them is palpable, despite them coming from very different worlds. When it all blows up, will Lola and the team be able to keep Quinn safe? Thoma has created an interesting team with diverse skills. Giving the leader Holt extreme wealth, the author gives herself freedom to have a largish group and the wherewithal to travel or do what they need to get the bad guys. Thoma has given the members of the group enough differentiation to be interesting in their own right, which is appropriate for the series. I haven’t read the first two books in the series, and this wasn’t a problem once I got into the book. However, the start was very confusing and I can see why another reviewer didn’t get very far into it. The first scene is an action sequence, which is normally a good way to start an action book. However, it was impossible to tell who all the characters were when we only had their voices during the chase sequence. It would have been much easier for a new reader to meet less of the team during the initial chase, and to meet the most of the team back at headquarters later on. Once I got to know the team a bit better, it was easier to differentiate the separate characters, their personalities and their roles within the team. I think this was an issue with coming into the series as a newcomer, rather than already knowing the team from previous books. Lola was smart and capable, and engagingly interested in learning new things. Quinn was a dedicated researcher, who seemed to come out of her shell as she spent more time with Lola. Their budding relationship was forged during a dangerous time, but Thoma created enough heat for it to have a flavour of its own within the chaos. I liked the action as written by Thoma. However, it did seem odd that the team call themselves bounty hunters when they spent so much of the book not doing any of that, nor even referring to it at all. It would have felt more real to have some staff still working on that in the background while others were focused on the major operation covered in the main plotline. I can see this being a popular book with fans of lesbian action writing, although I would recommend you read the previous books first. This is an enjoyable action romp with a lesbian twist. This book just couldn’t hold my interest and I didn’t like the characters, which maybe was why it didn’t captivate me. |
