Beautful artwork and story, which shows how Ballet can be completely different for one person to another person.

A very sweet book. I read it with my little sister and she really loves graphic novels. She really loved it and we got to bond talking about the story.

Goodreads Synopsis:

Emma and Violette are sisters who share the same dream of attending Paris’s most prestigious dance school. Violette passes the first audition with flying colors, but Emma doesn’t, and their world comes crashing down. But there may be more than one way to dance through life… This is the revelation at the heart of the first volume of this lively and graceful narrative.

My Review:

This book begins with Emma being told she needs to stop being so individualistic. Her mom wants her to be perfect, not special. Two sisters, Violette and Emma, both ballerinas. Both fighting for the same spot in a prestigious dance school. Although They both trained as much as they could, only one can be accepted, and the other has their dreams quickly dashed. A straightforward story with unique art, I really enjoyed reading it. It’s only about fifty pages, so it’s pretty quick. Definitely check it out if you get the chance.

Thanks for reading!

I loved the artwork, it's definitely my favorite thing about this book. I didn't quite understand what was going on but there was a couple nice messages about not pressuring your kids in sports and finding your passion which I liked. There was a cliffhanger ending I wasn't expecting and I can't wait to see what happens next!

First of all the first thing you notice about Emma And Viollette is the absolutely beautiful art work and this same art is through out the book. This a a graphic novel; the first on Ive read, and it didn't disappoint. The story is about a girl aspiring to become a prima ballerina and the obstacles tha she will face in trying to reach that difficult goal. She must overcome setback and changes she was never expecting.
I love the message of things not always going the way you want them to and figuring out what to do next because that's how things work out which is completely fine.

Cute comic with a dance theme. It was short and I like that it was something I could read and finish in one sitting.

A pretty and well done graphic novel focusing on two sisters and their dream. It's rather short, overall, but it's pretty and the story draws you in.

This book is really good and the art is beautiful. The story is also very good and realistic. The story covers the relationship between parents and siblings and not just the good moments, but also the difficult ones. It shows that it is okay to change your mind and to get new dreams, and to try to achieve them.

Dance is surprisingly well suited to presentation in graphic novel form. Thus I wish we'd seen more of it in this book, rather than the focus on interpersonal problems and parental pressures.

This is a gorgeous graphic novel for middle great, with such great themes and lessons inside. The art is so light, graceful and fluid - it fits the story about ballet and dancing like a glove!

It is a short story, but in such few pages it manages to pull you in and make you care and root for the character! It features a complex story about dreams and how to deal with failure, insecurities that might stop us from achieving our dream or simply accepting that our dream has changed in spite of all the work and passion we put into it so far.

I cannot wait for the next book in the series and I think the author did a great job on how it ended this book. You get closure and a conclusion, but there are also some things left in the air just to tempt the reader and pique the reader's interest for the next book!

A BIG Thank You to NetGalley and Europe Comics for providing me an advanced electronic copy of “A Dream for Three (Emma and Violette, #1)” by Jérôme Hamon.

This was a charming graphic novel to read. The graphic novels I have read usually range from fantasy, science fiction, adventures and action. It is such a refreshing change to read a regular family drama told in this format. Reading this made me feel like I was watching a good old prime-time drama from the 90s. In fact, I felt like I was reliving watching old episodes of shows like “7th Heaven” or “Dawson’s Creek”.

What I found most appealing about “Emma and Violette” was how the characters are portrayed. There are no good or bad characters in this book. Each person has their good and bad attributes that make the story more realistic and relatable. My favorite character was of course, Emma. Even though she goes through a lot of disappointments with her mother, Violette, Jake and ballet, she still emerges a trooper. While most of us would root for Emma, I can’t help but feel sorry for her mother as well. I’m sure there are parents out there who put their hopes and dreams onto their children to be fulfilled. When the child fails to meet their expectations, the parents react negatively to their failures. The story has depicted the turmoil between the mother and daughter relationship very well. I also like the father figure in the family, as he is portrayed as someone cool yet sensible. I liked Violette as well, but we don’t get to see her interact much in this issue.

The main credit goes to Jérôme Hamon for creating a gripping story and executing it in this graphical format. The pacing, storyline and characterisations are all beautifully implemented, making it a very memorable read. Lena Sayaphoum has also done a good job on the artwork. While I see most of the reviewers complimenting the illustrations, I felt they could have been better. I like how the details of the background contrast with the cartoon like forms of the characters. However, the colours seemed a little dull, and didn’t suit my personal choice for reading. Also, the text bubbles are somewhat squeezed in some panels and I couldn’t make out which character was talking.

I am very much looking forward to the next instalment in this series. What’s fun about this kind of genre is that there’s always room for new stories with the same characters. I hope the series does well and we continue seeing the trials and tribulations of Emma and Violette growing up. I am particularly interested in seeing some sibling rivalry between the two. Overall, I enjoyed reading “Emma and Violette 1: A Dream for Three” and give it 4 / 5 rating.

This was a short and cute coming of age graphic novel about two sisters who love to dance. Emma is learning who she is, she is growing up and realizing that dreams can change. She is also learning that her parents are human, and though they want what is best for her, they are not all knowing.
I really liked this story, and the artwork is BEAUTIFUL! I look forward to the next one.

A gorgeous story about ballet, family and growing up

A beautifully illustrated coming of age graphic novel in which two sisters who have devoted their entire short lives to ballet come to a crossroads and must decide just how dedicated each of them is to dance, and whether they plan to make it part of their future careers.

I liked the cute illustration style but found the story pretty cliched and it didn't tie up very well at the end. I found I got lost in what was going on at the start too as the storyline wasn't very clear.

I am so thrilled to see more European comics being translated and released in North America! It means I have a whole new world of stories and artists to explore! So exciting :) A Dream for Three is a book about ballet. Specifically, two sisters trying to attain their dream of being professional ballerinas and the struggles that journey entails. They are young, but Emma is struggling given how free-spirited she is. Too individualistic for ballet, as it turns out, which has been her dream since she was little. Emma is torn between feeling heartbroken, but also feeling free. Her dad supports her, but her mother and little sister are angry that she's choosing a different path.

I love stories that really dig into the sacrifices and pain of elite sport and art. We often encourage people to try their hardest and push themselves to attain these dreams, but what does that cost people? I remember being a music kid and practice and competitions ate into my life. Sure, it was fun. But is it worth it to push young people so hard to be excellent at something for such a brief period of their lives? This story does a good job at teasing apart these complexities for a young audience, showing the darker side of such dedication, and the emotional toil that these goals can have on kids and their families.

I do wish the comic was longer as some additional decompression of the narrative would have been nice. There's a bit of a time skip at the end that I wish we had gotten to see more of. However, with its beautiful art and very contemporary flare, I think A Dream for Three is an excellent book for younger readers that tells both a fun story, but also conveys some important lessons.
