I absolutely loved this book, it was a bit different than my usual suspenseful thrillers, but had the elements of it too. This author makes sure the reader is totally emerged in the story and it's heart wrenching at times, but also tense. I will definitely read others by this author and recommend to everyone!

If you read the plot summary of this book, you’ll likely think: basic suspense thriller.

Oh, this is so much more!

The Disappearing by Lori Roy is beautiful, heartbreaking, and haunting.

It starts ‘ripped from the headlines’ with a plot lightly based on the real life findings at the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys in Florida. The author creates her own school, but there’s a horrifying mystery concerning the boys who ran from the school in the not so distant past.

Mixed with the story of the long ago disappearing boys, we have the present day disappearances of the blondes – and we wonder if the two are somehow connected.

The story is told in multiple points of view, each narrative voice disturbing in its own right.

And the truth these voices finally tell? It’s shocking.

The author plays fair. She weaves a tale both compelling and sordid and entwined in the various character arcs are subtle hints as to the truth. I was stunned that I missed it, but simply loved the way it was revealed.

Beautifully written and a very well deserved five star read!

How can I just now be discovering Lori Roy? This was such a good read and kept me engaged throughout. I was actually surprised toward the end. It was not what I had anticipated, but was so much more satisfying. I will absolutely be reading more from this author.

Lane Field never planned to return to the North Florida town where there were ugly accusations about her father in his role as director of a local boy’s reform home. But now, twenty years and a marriage later, she’s back with her two daughters. It’s not ideal, she’s tending bar and living at her parent’s plantation home, but it’s better than staying with her two timing husband. Then, Lana’s eldest daughter disappears, along with a student from the local college. Folks have to wonder if they’re being targeted by a serial killer like the one who stalked their town forty years before. When Lane’s younger daughter starts talking about her new best friend, Lane fears that her past, and her father’s actions have come back to haunt them all. Roy depicts small town Northern Florida in a way that will have you forgetting all about sunny beaches and amusement parks. She brings to life the darkest side of the Sunshine State
