A really nice volume from Ray Fawkes, whose writing I am often lukewarm on. This is the story of Fantomah, a sort of water-based vengeance ghost, and how she comes to be, as well as how she manages to take down several violent gang members. The art is great and the story is straightforward - I'm curious to see what direction this goes if/when it continues.

Received from NetGalley

Paz takes care of her little twin sisters a lot, dad is often unreachable. When the sisters go missing she does everything in order to find them. She find her self in the middle of gang business and almost dies. But instead of dying, she becomes Fantomah.

Up From The Deep is the first Comic Book I've ever read and I liked it. :) The art work is beautiful and the story interesting. I wish there was more about the Fantomah itself and the way her power works, but might come in future Comic Books :).

Having started afresh with a publishing house brand new to me - Canada's Chapterhouse, which is nothing to do with any other country's Chapterhouse - I was gutted to find the first book of theirs I tried, Pathetic Lizard Turd, or whatever it's called, to be utter pants. I thought I was on a hiding to nothing here, too, as this netgalley gives us the wrong introduction, blurb and next-time-on page - clearly this is people who don't know what they're doing. Luckily, Raw Fawkes does know what he's doing, and provides a decent-enough drama of a young woman, tasked in a supernatural way with getting vengeance on a gang of shittily-named child abductors. It's not perfect - the piece is a little too succinct and short, especially at the climax, and the art has to give her a 'Ghost Rider' blazing skull and yet make her sexy, with tight mini-skirts or black bustiers - but it's a lot better than I feared. Recommended.

A great graphic novel. Deep colors and a gritty storyline. Highley recommend!

I received a copy of this graphic novel in exchange for an honest review. I absolutely did not want this story to end! I loved the illustration and the concept drawings included at the end. The story line was fantastic. A young woman has to step up and take care of her twin sisters while their father is "away" on business. It happens a lot. Paz is trying to do the right thing but her sisters are young and she doesn't want them to know what disappointment is yet. So she does what any other girl in her situation does and sucks it up. Gets them ready for school and lies to them about why their father isn't home yet. Paz appears to be in a somewhat rough type of social setting. The story line shows gangsters/thugs harassing her and committing crimes. As the story unfolds, the reader discovers that Paz's father is a DEA agent with some questionable ways of handling certain cases. When Paz's sisters are kidnapped, she goes after the people she thinks are responsible, only to find out it isn't them. During the confrontation, something happens and Paz isn't herself anymore. She hears things now and is drawn to places to help people. Not just any people though, she is drawn to the hideouts of where kids are being held captive. Just when she thinks she has found her sisters, another kink is thrown in the line. The man that has taken them isn't what he appears to be and is all too familiar with what Paz has become. Paz makes a choice to save her family but it comes at a great cost.

*thank you to Netgalley and Diamond Book Distributors for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review*

3 stars.

I was very impressed with this from page one. The graphics are amazing and just that first page made me think this was going to be very good. On one hand, yes. Yes it was good. There was actually a decent story going on and it made you want to keep reading. On the other hand, I was a bit confused. Luckily some of that confusion was cleared up once I got to chapter 4, the final chapter, but I still felt that we were thrown into this story and are ment to know what's going on and who is who etc. I can't say too much without spoilers so I won't. But, I still did like it. The story idea was pretty brilliant and I love the paranormal side to this. It is quite violent though. Probably not more than any other graphic novel or comic that also has violence but I feel that I needed to add that in.

At the end, there are extra bonus material pages filled with more artwork. I spent time taking it all in as it was so good. I think maybe if we are given a bit more of an outline of the story before really going into it, would help alot. I know that there is a forward and an introduction but they don't go into this story unfortunately. If I hadn't had gotten so confused with parts this would easily have been 4 stars.
