Maribel is 11 when she is taken by her father and told that her mother and grandfather have passed. Pirates "Privateers" take over that ship and kill her father and she wants to be a pirate and she is just a spitfire to let them know that. The book was boring, unrealistic and just juvenile. I read the whole thing and it was well written just not something that kept my interest and I didn't care about any of the characters. There was so many jumbled plots and it just was too much at times.

Received this book as an ARC for my honest review.

The Pirate Bride is book 2 in a series that I'm just loving! It is a series called The Daughters of the Mayflower and we are studying American History in school this year so the series title has caught my eye. I just love history. This was a story about adventures on the sea and some time spent on land. It involves twists and turns and time and love and pirates and even nuns. I enjoyed following all the developments that were involved and I find Kathleen's writing to be well executed. Can’t wait to read the next one!

This is the 2nd book in the Mayflower series and you can read as a stand alone. I personelly like the first one better.

Maribel is kidnapped by her absentee pirate father and Captain Jean Beaumont who was chasing her dad takes over the ship. Maribel is quickly loyal to the Captain but they get separated. He presumes she is dead until there paths cross again when she is older.

Not my favorite story because the story went to fast. I wish certain sections where expanded on more (It's not a bad thing when a reader would like more). A historical fiction novel with a sprinkling of religious flavor to it and some romance.

Rating 4,5 stars

I loved this book. It was filled with adventure, humour, fun memorable characters and twists I did not see coming.

Maribel was a fun, independent, adventurous 12 year old and later 23 year old women. I loved her love for books and adventure and how she stayed true to herself, even though society saw things different when she came to New Orleans.

Jean-Luc was a dashing spirited character. I enjoyed all his adventures and especially the scenes with him as a privateer.

I adored Abigail, she brought such a different atmosphere with her care and truthfulness.

The ending was a bit of a let down. I was expecting a bit more action.

The other reason for deducting 0.5 stars, is that the synopsis gives me an entirely different expectation for the story than what it was actually about.

I will definitely read more from this author. This was the first book I've read from her and really enjoyed her style.

Recommended to fans of Historical fiction filled with adventure.

Book 2 in the Daughters of the Mayflower series, The Pirate Bride was a relatively quick read - coming in at 251 pages . Maribel Córdoba is a precocious 10 year old in love with reading and pirates.

Her adventure on the high sea sets the course and concludes when she is a young woman in New Orleans. I won’t go into details about the in between time suffice to say her life takes a direction in the least expected way.

The Pirate Bride is a story of mystery, adventure, new beginnings and faith. This works well as a stand-alone with Mirabel being a descendant of the heroine in Book 1, The Mayflower Bride. The series continues with The Captive Bride (already released).

Kathleen Y’Barbo is a new author for me, I enjoyed her writing style, she captured the essence of the high sea and lifestyle of the era. Definitely a series I will continue to read.

My thanks to the publisher via Netgalley for an copy of this book, though due to personal issues I went the audio route (via Hoopla)

This love story was so interesting. It was kind of weird at first that you could sense the chemistry between Maribel and Jean-Luc when she was a child, but then as she was at the convent and then again in New Orleans, I was rooting for them. I wasn't quite sure what to make of Maribel's mother, and thought that her whole character was a bit odd.

I liked this book a lot more than the Mayflower Bride, which is the one before this in the series.

Entertaining and well written story about the daughter of a Spanish ship, Maribel Cordoba, and her beau Jean-Luc, the captain of a French ship. I loved the historical portrayal of New Orleans and privateers. Lots of dangerous turns and action, with volence seemingly skimmed over. Good chemistry between Maribel and Jean-Luc. Thank you Net Galley for the opportunity to review this book. 3.5 Stars

Amazing! I love books with wonderful characters and stories! Especially those where I can actually learn of the past! Though the character are fictional, there truly are historical facts that are woven throughout! I truly loved this story, though at times it was difficult reading through my tears. If you love fictional historical romances that you can actually learn of history from, especially emotional ones, then this book is perfect for you!

The Daughter’s of the Mayflower Series is quickly becoming a favorite. The Pirate bride was book 2 in the series and was a very enjoyable read. It included some interesting history and characters that were easy to love. There was lots of adventure and an acceptable level of romance balanced with the history. I loved Maribel’s spunk.
My only negative comment is the ending seemed really rushed. It felt like the plots really didn’t develop. It was a very captivating read and I would have loved if it had continued long enough to resolve some of the rushed issues. Nevertheless, it was well worth reading and I look forward not only to the next book in the Mayflower series but also in reading other books by Kathleen Y’Barbo. Okay, I’m just going to go ahead and give my honest thoughts here. This book seemed like it knew where it was trying to go, but not how to get there. I didn’t think the transitions made sense, nor did I really like how it ended. The writing seemed amateurish and the plot skipped along like rocks on a pond, instead of smoothly like a sailboat. It was slow and then rushed and didn’t seem natural. The idea was creative but the result choppy. It wasn’t necessarily a bad book in terms of content, but there are better written pirate books out there (MaryLu Tyndall writes some really good ones).

Ahoy Mateys! Arrrre you ready to read a thrilling book filled with privateers, ghost ships, battles, captains, romance, and high sea adventures? Then look no further than "The Pirate Bride" by Kathleen Y'Barbo. This book hooked me from the start and I finished it within only a couple sittings. Twelve year old Maribel Cordova is on board her father's Spanish ship when it is overtaken by French privateers. After her father's death, this red headed spitfire boards the French privateer ship and instantly wins over its crew and captain despite having quite the feisty personality. After this point in the story there is hardly a dull moment. I was swept away and anxiously kept reading to find out what would happen to each character especially to the two main characters Maribel and Jean-Luc Valmot. I liked how there were many twists and turns especially near the end of the book and many surprises too. I don't even think I could tell you where the climax is in this book if I were to put it on a story map. There's just so many high points in the book that include a lot of action. I would consider this book more of an adventure book rather than a romance book despite the word "bride" in the title.

This is the second book in the series that I have read and they are definitely stand-alone books. The main characters are connected genetically and there's a helpful family tree in both books to see the connection but you could read them out of order which is what I have done without any problem at all. Set aside a few hours of uninterrupted reading time when reading this book. I think you will be swept out to sea like I was and won't want to come back to shore until the book's satisfying conclusion.
Thank-you to Barbour Publishing and Net Galley for a copy of this book.

The Pirate Bride by Kathleen Y’Barbo is the second book in the Daughters of the Mayflower series. It tells the story of Maribel Cordova and Jean Luc Valmot. When Maribel was a child she was taken by her father and ends up on a pirate ship. That experience never leaves her and she must recall it even more as a young women to help her family.
This was a fast moving, adventure that was fun to read. Though some things felt a little to fast at times. I wish the pace had slowed down a bit and more details were given. Also, some situations and relationships didn’t seem very realistic. The characters were not really developed but I still had fun reading it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It kept me engaged the entire time reading it. I enjoyed the way history and fiction were intermingled together. I liked that it continues the family from The Mayflower Bride, but definitely can be a stand-alone book. I found myself wanting to get back to the story when I was required to be elsewhere. I think this is one of those books you can just read and enjoy. My only criticism is that it ended too soon. I saw potential for some adventures in the ending but the book wrapped up. I guess our imaginations will just have to suffice.

I had a blast hanging out with Maribel Cordoba and Captain Beaumont. When Maribel splashed on the page and came to life with her fiercely independent thinking, her spunk, with a sense of high sea adventure, and her determination to become a crew member of a pirate ship. I had to smile and laugh out-loud at her passionate desire and confidence in dealing with these pirates.

She knew all she needed to know by reading (almost three times now) , “The Notorious Seafaring Pirates and their Exploits by Captain Ulysses Jones. When Jean-Lu Valmont meets Maribel for the first time a ship mate describes Maribel’s dilemma, “apparently the gag was deemed necessary due to the girl’s insistence on telling anyone who might listen about the books she’s read on pirating and how she knows their jobs well enough to do all of them.” Humor rose on the old man’s face as he looked at Jean…” She’s a spitfire, that one. Watch yourself near her.”

Jean-Lu Valmont is strong, handsome, a pirate commissioned by the French. He operated his ship a little differently than most pirates. He was not cut throat and ruthless. But he would demand respect from everyone on his ship. Then he meets Maribel Cordoba in a vulnerable position and after they take the gag out of her mouth. He says, “I am the captain of this vessel.” He looked at Maribel “As such, I regret to inform you that a woman will never be fit to join my crew.”

“And why not?” says eleven-year-old Maribel.

“I’m responsible for protecting all of you.”

“That’s ridiculous. I’ve done a fine job fending for myself.” Maribel blurts out. She’d show him and the other guys on this ship a thing or two; and she does! Grin! (I’m not going to spoil it)

There is more fun in-store for Maribel when she gets to New Orleans. There are surprises for her, Jean-Luc and the reader. This is an entertaining action-packed adventure on land and at sea. It’s a great escape; with well-developed characters I liked hanging out with. I highly recommend this as a delightful read and one that would work well for your book club experience. There is so much to discuss.

I fell in love when I read the first book Daughters of the Mayflower series The Mayflower Bride and am so excited to be reviewing the second book in the series, The Pirate Bride.

We begin the story with Maribel Cordoba, a 11-year-old girl that is grieving the recent deaths of both her mother and beloved grandfather. The only family she has to speak of is her Spanish father who has brought her aboard a ship full of privateers and Captain Beaumont, a man that is harboring a vendetta for the spaniard. Cordoba murdered both his brother and his mother years before and Captain Beaumont is ready to settle the score. A brawl aboard the ship leads to Maribel becoming an orphan but she is quickly "adopted" by the many of the privateers and Captain Beaumont himself.

When the ship is attacked Captain Beaumont believes that the young Maribel is killed during the battle and is racked with guilt for years. You find out that Captain Beaumont is in fact Jean-Luc Valmont from the prominent Valmont family of New Orleans, Louisiana. No one knows that both men are actually the same person or that Maribel in fact survived the battle and has been growing up at an orphanage on a small island in the Caribbean.

I first want to say that I fell in love with the main premise of the book. The action was intriguing and I finished the book quite quickly. The characters were well developed and you can't help but fall in love with Maribel's tenacity.

The only fault I found with the story was the age difference between Jean-Luc and Maribel which, if you read other reviews, I am not alone in my opinion. When the story begins you see Captain Beaumont (Jean-Luc) more like a father figure to the fatherless Maribel. He is incredibly protective of her and his heartbrokenness from losing her is almost palpable. When the story fast forwards to Maribel as a young adult Jean-Luc is also quite a few years older and yet the age difference is not a major concern not only between the two of them but for any of their acquaintances.

Other than that I really enjoyed The Pirate Bride and cannot wait to read the next book in The Daughters of the Mayflower series, The Captured Bride which was just released last month.

2.5 Stars. I read the version from NetGallery before it was published. That said, I hope that with a few changes the published version was better.
In the beginning, you are introduced to Maribel. She a spunky girl who has lost her mother and grandfather. Her father (who has been rare in her life) is the captain of a ship and takes her on his next trip. She loves being on the boat and loves reading adventure novels, especially ones about pirates.
Disaster strikes and she finds herself on a French privateer ship with a diverse and kind group of men.
Disaster strikes again, and her life doesn’t end up at all like she planned.
I enjoyed the beginning but felt like the second half of the book was very rushed and could have played out much better. This also was a romance novel with very little romance. I really wish the ending was better and more thought out.
Thank you Barbour books for the opportunity to read it.

Aye, If ye be seeking adventure with pirates, privateers, and a feisty heroine, then The Pirate Bride by Kathleen Y’Barbo is the book you need to be reading! I have always loved tales of pirates and sword fights and adventures on the high seas so I was very excited to read this book. While not exactly the story I thought it would be, it still held my attention all the way to the end. While this book could stand alone, it was fun for me to know that the heroine, Maribel was related to Mary and William Lytton whose story takes place in the first book in the series. I loved how courageous and feisty, Maribel was and how tough yet kind Captain Beaumont was. They seemed like the perfect match. The one problem I had with the book was that at least half the book was just on Maribel’s younger life which seemed more like a young adult adventure novel than a romance. The last half advanced the story to over a decade later, and then the romance between the two happened very abruptly. I could have guessed the romance would happen, but it seemed like there needed to be more time for it to develop. However, in spite of the sudden romance, I still enjoyed the book and the adventure it took me on.
I would recommend this book for someone who enjoys reading books about pirates. It is a fun continuation of the family tree that starts in the first book in the Daughters of the Mayflower series.

This is a fantastic read. The twists and turns of the novel are entirely captivating and I adore books about pirates. The characters are flushed out really well. This is a second book in a series, but it can stand-alone. The writing style is intriguing, and I read through the story within hours. My only compliant is that the formatting for the novel was horrible on my kindle and very distracting. I hope this is fixed before it is published.
