Little Polar Bear Takes a Stand by Hans de Beer was read aloud for #classroombookaday. Students did not take to this book as I thought they would. They found it slow and thought it missed the mark. They did appreciate the illustrations.

I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I was hoping for more from this book. I think it's important for kids to know about their impact on the planet and ways they can be better. I thought it fell a little short of giving that message in a catchy story that kids would want to listen to. The illustrations are great though.

This is a children illustrated book about the importance of fighting for what is right. The story has a good message, but told the wrong way because the animals destroy things and take revenge. Illustrations are cute, but not the story.

What a cute little book. This is a story about a little polar bear named Lars who comes to find out that there are no more fish. He and his friends seek out to get rid of the people and problems that are stopping the fish from swimming into the bay. A very fun and fast read. I highly recommend this book to everyone of all ages. Thanks to Netgalley for a digital copy.

In Little Polar Bear Takes a Stand, three friends fight for what they feel is right. A polar bear, a tern, and a seal make a fun trio that decide to take matters into their own hands when they realize that their food supply is in jeopardy. Thank to global warming, they notice that more and more humans are coming to Antarctica. The large cargo ships are scaring away all the fish, and soon they'll be left with no more food.

I felt that global warming is a very important subject to teach children, and I'm not sure this book really nailed the message. With long sentences and a lot of text, I feel like this book would be better suited for older children.

It's kind of a strange children's book. I've read (seen the pictures) of some other books that carry across the same message but as a parent of a demanding three-year-old with loads of questions and short attention spans I need to say that the text was flat. The sentences felt too long and gibberish for a kid to be able to relate to the point. They felt written for a low educated adult as opposed to a curious child.

The pictures were nice but the story itself a bit disturbing. I mean, what is it teaching exactly? That animals will rebel one day? How am I supposed to "translate" this to my son?

This was charming picture book that my daughter and I really enjoyed reading. The pictures are simple but stunning at the same time. Each page was a delight to look at. The story was a good one and allowed me to ask developing questions. We have read this story a lot since downloading it!

There are some minor errors in the language that shows that the author is not a native English speaker (or at least I assume that's what the problem is.

Too many scientific inconsistencies: Male polar bears don't stay with their cubs, cubs aren't cubs that long. For all that, I know it's just a kids book but it grated on me. It would have been ok, but the message was just too preachy for me. Not subtle at all. A real in your face environmental thing... And it wasn't done well. It could definitely have been done better.

I could barely finish it.

Lars is a curious little pup. He wants to see a human. But what he finds instead are new friends with the same problem: not enough to eat. The determine it’s the humans and seek revenge. The story is cute, but it is a revenge story. They destroy things. It could seed a confusing message to children about how to deal with bullies, or rules they don’t like.

In this book the Little Polar Bear, Lars meets two new friends, Isa the Tern and Bertie the Seal. They discover that their food supply of fish has been depleted and scared from the area following humans moving in - so they work together to get the humans away from the area. I understand the need for the story to highlight to youngsters the impact of man on the environment and it is great that this one focuses on teamwork and working together but it isn't executed as well as it could have been sadly. Nice images and nice idea - 3 stars from me.

In this installment of the Little Polar Bear series, Lars travels to the fishing bay to see if he can catch a glimpse of humans that have become a more common sight in the area. While he doesn’t see any humans, he does find the fishing bay is strangely lacking in fish, and that there are many more traces of humans than before–radio towers, buoys, and ships. He and a couple of friends decided they should do something about this and help the fishing bay return to its fishy status.

Not only is it a fun story with adorable illustrations, but it also teaches about the dangers of overexploiting fragile ecosystems such as the arctic. If only solving the problem of overexploitation of the arctic was as easy (and as cute) as it was here.

Highly recommended!

A great way to teach children to not interfere with the natural world. I loved little polar bear and how he joined with his friends to get back the fish that the humans have disrupted. It was a great read and one i would consider an important one in this current world.

Lars, a spunky little polar bear, discovers that humans have invaded his territory, his precious fishing bay, resulting in a grave depletion of fish that the animals so desperately need to survive. This is just not right! Bravely he steps forward to intervene and save the creatures that live there.

Isa a tern, and Robbie a seal, rally their family and friends to join Lars in this just cause and the war against injustice is on. They hatch successful plans to obliterate the human presence and send them packing thus restoring the wealth of food that the fishing bay provides for the animals.

The book introduces young readers to the perils of global warming and the dire consequences that can occur because of it. It also shines a light on how humans can disrupt the ecosystem causing the web and flow of animal life to become unbalanced and their very existence endangered. The book encourages and inspires those affected to rise up, take action and become a part of the solution to the problem before it is too late to act.

The author with his wonderful artwork and meaningful text has done an exemplary job of getting his message understood by kids and explaining to them that no matter how small or insignificant you think you are, your voice can be heard and you can make a difference in your world.

Cute but touching story about the struggle polar bears face. The illustrations compliment the text. I love that the story ends on a positive note but I would have liked to see a section on conservation efforts and ways for children to help .

If only it was this easy! Nice take on the destruction of an environment and Little Polar bear and friends saving it! I like Hans de Beer books. Just right for young kiddos to enjoy and wonderful illustrations!

Little Polar Bear Takes a Stand follows a polar bear and his friends on quite the adventure to find out why their region doesn't have enough fish any more. They come across many arctic animals and you learn about the habitat as they discover that humans are putting up all sorts of technology, buoys and buildings to help them with shipping and other ventures. The humans don't realize what they are doing to the environment and the animals as they do it. So, the animals set out to destroy the things the humans have put into place. While the animals are successful in destroying things, there isn't really any true resolution to the problem.
The illustrations were lovely and I appreciated the story line, just wished there was more to it.

Most of us have seen the pictures of the emaciated polar bear painfully scrounging for food. DeBeers's new book tackles how global warming is affecting the arctic by showing how human presence also affects this fragile ecosystem.

The illustrations are delightful, and though this book is clearly meant for older reader, i'm not sure where exactly it would fit in the library.
