This was a quick read with the suspense built around the question of Layla’s disappearance 12 years ago. When clues begin to surface that Layla may still be alive, her former fiancée Finn, hides the truth from Layla’s sister, his current fiancée. The story was fairly predictable, even with the twists. I wouldn’t recommend since there are so many other thrillers that are better written. This seemed to try to follow the “Gone Girl” format too close. |

This book was a twisting psychological thriller. The story drew me in from the moment I read the description, and I wasn't disappointed with any of the turns. As the story unfolded, I found myself changing my mind about the outcome I wanted. I didn't get the ending I was hoping for, but the book was even better for not following my expected course. There is a lot of emotion written into this storyline that stays with you well after the last page is turned. I didn't know this author before I read this book, but I'll be looking for more from B A Paris in the future! |
Russian dolls, suspense , but some tiresome dialog. There are things to like in this book, but overall , it is not one of the best mysteries of the summer. Despite all the hype about this book, there are some concerns about the novel and is it popular only because of the authors reputation. |
4.5 stars! Gripping and highly addictive! I have read every one of B.A. Paris’ books and have found each one compulsively readable. There is something about her writing that sucks you in from the very first page and doesn’t let you go until you have read the last word (often leaving your jaw hitting the floor). This book followed that magical formula of hers, leaving my hands feeling a desperate sense of empty when they weren’t holding this novel. Though I figured out a big plot twist at the end of Part 1, I still devoured this book, soaking up every word with curious anticipation of how things would work out in the end. This novel follows forty one year old Finn, who lives with his girlfriend Ellen. Over a decade prior, Finn’s then-girlfriend Layla (who happens to be Ellen’s sister) disappeared, never to be seen again. The pain of losing Layla has haunted Finn every day since her disappearance. This was a Traveling Sister read with Brenda. It was a quick and addictive read that I highly recommend! A big thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press and B. A. Paris for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review!! Bring Me Back is available now!! |
Another book of the unreliable narrator genre like Gone Girl. If you have had any experience reading stories like this, you will figure out the twist pretty quickly. The narrator Finn has lost the love of his life, when she disappeared from a rest stop while they were on vacation. Although he was initially suspected of being the cause of her disappearance, he is ultimately cleared of suspicion. However he gives the reader reason to believe that his innocence is not so clear-cut. Flash forward ten years and we learn he is engaged to his former sweetheart's sister. At this point readers familiar with this genre can predict that no good will come of this. All that is left is to pick up the clues as the author scatters them through the story. I always lose patience with a character who causes his own troubles because of the foolish choices he makes, and this story is a prime example. Not telling the truth and then justifying your lies to the reader make for a weak hero. But then hero is not a term you would apply to the main character of a book like this. This story will appeal to fans of The Girl on the Train and Gone Girl, but I find it too formulaic for my taste. |
Bring Me Back is a novel that will surprise you at the end. Written in first person, from the points of view of Finn and Layla, it tells a complicated story of love and loss. Twelve years ago, Layla disappeared one night from a parking lot at a rest area. Finn never found out what happened to her. He has moved on. Now, he is set to marry Layla’s sister, Ellen. However, he begins to receive mysterious messages in the form of emails and little Russian dolls left in various places for him to find. Who is behind these things? As a reader, I enjoyed how the story built up over time, building on previous revelations. The one thing is did not enjoy was how each chapter ended with a cliffhanger-type sentence. This is something that annoyed me as a reader of James Patterson and caused me to give up reading his books. It’s disconcerting seeing another author use the same technique. As a reader, I feel that this technique brings the author’s presence to mind too much. In my opinion, good writing should transcend the presence of the author. The story should be told without the reader constantly being reminded that this is a work of fiction. It detracts from the story to have both narrators using the same technique since they are supposed to be separate characters. Other than that, I enjoyed the story. Toward the end, the reader begins to suspect what is really going on. The big reveal near the end isn’t too surprising. But, I was disappointed at the way the novel ended. Without giving away spoilers, I was hoping for a much different resolution to this book. Other readers’ opinions on that may differ. The writing is good and dialog is believable. The characters are well-written. I felt that Ellen’s character did lack some in depth, but Finn’s character was pretty well documented. I wanted to know more about Layla’s character too. We do find out more near the end, but she’s the mystery woman throughout the story. If you like a good mystery without a lot of gratuitous violence, this one may be for you. |

This is my first book by this author and I’m not sure what to think. Bring Me Back has the potential to be a great suspense book but it just fell a little flat for me. I do have to say from chapter 55 on is what earned the book 2 stars. |
Poor Finn, he stops at a gas station with his girlfriend Layla and she disappears. He is accused of being part of her disappearance. 12 years later he is with her sister Ellen and Russian Nesting Dolls start appearing along with a elderly neighbor saying he seen Layla. Then Finn starts getting emails that escalate into Layla asking his to kill Ellen. This book has so many suspenseful twists, you go back and say what just happened? Great read. |
Fun and exciting read that is great for summer. I really enjoyed it even though I really thought Finn was so oblivious sometimes. I would recommend to anyone who loves a fun mystery. |

This is my first book by B.A. Paris and I was not disappointed! After the disappearance of his girlfriend, Finn seems to live a regular life and meets the sister of his girlfriend. Eventually, they become engaged and start a life together... until Finn starts to get threatening letters and trinkets of a past life from an unknown emailer. I enjoyed this book and got to a point where it was hard to put down. I did not expect the resolution with her father, but I had some feeling about the ending. I still have misgivings about Finn and Ellen together as I don't think I would ever want to date a sibling of a girlfriend, especially if her disappearance had been mysterious and unsolved. I give the book a solid 4.5 stars! |
The book description is what drew me to this book. I liked that Finn admits to lying and changing his story to us, the readers, and I really wanted to know what was going on. As I read this, I wasn't sure who "did it" or what was going on, so suspenseful it was. I'm still not sure how I feel about the ending, I didn't like the way it was all summed. |
If I don’t enjoy a book I don’t usually comment as everyone has different tastes and we all read differently. However as this was a free proof from #netgalley, a review is part of the deal. Twelve years ago Finn had a fight with his girlfriend Layla, while on holiday in France. At a roadside stop she vanishes and although initially a suspect in her disappearance, Finn is eventually released and gets on with his life. Now he is engaged to Ellen, Layla’s sister, and life is good. But soon little things start to happen and it all seems to point to Layla being live and close by. Told firstly in then and now chapters, then from Finn and finally Layla’s point of view, I found this overdone storyline wholly predictable. Most avid readers will work the twist out after a few chapters. Finn seems like a moron who obsesses over everything and instead of finding his dread page turning, I wanted to give up on the book. Reading reviews I see lots of people loved this book. Not me tho. |
A tragic love triangle between Layla, Ellen and Finn. Quite the surprise ending! The love of two girls can be dangerous!! Enjoy! |
*I would like to thank the publisher, author, and NetGalley for providing an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review* It’s summer time, and that means it’s time for summer suspense and mystery season! To kick it off, I started with Bring Me Back by B.A. Paris. This is her third novel, but the first I have had the pleasure to read (and have since been informed that I must read her debut novel), and it was a wild ride. Taking place in England, the story alternates between the past and present for Finn, and additionally from the view of Layla: Finn’s girlfriend that went missing twelve years ago, and is presumed dead. Shortly after Finn proposes to Ellen (Layla’s sister) he starts receiving mysterious emails and other clues that imply that Layla may actually still be alive and leads him to inspect everything he had assumed about the past decade. While I was able to figure out the mystery before too long, it didn’t stop me from reading the entirety of the novel over the course of a weekend. The pacing was fast and action-driven and left me with that feeling that thrillers do, like stepping off a literary amusement ride. Even though I saw the ending coming, I was left feeling disoriented and wobbly once the last page was turned. This was surely an addictive, fulfilling summer read! |
WHAM! Be ready for the book hangover of your life! Layla's disappearance left Finn permanently scarred. Unable to recall every detail of that night, he is obsessed with finding the love of his life. How did she disappear? Was she kidnapped? Murdered? Where did she go? They all looked for her until, after 10 years, she was declared dead and a memorial was held. Now that his relationship with Layla's sister Ellen has bloomed into love and impending marriage, the mystery is alive again as suspect emails, Russian mini dolls, and sightings, lead him to believe Layla may be alive and close by. Is it his obsession who has brought her back or is Layla truly jealous he is about to marry her sister? How can he find out who he truly loves? He feels differently toward Ellen, but it is still love and respect for a woman who has only been supportive of his needs. Our author has done it again. This is a page-turner that will grip your heart and will not let it go. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. I thank the author/publisher for sharing a copy with me. |

This is the first book have I read by B.A. Paris. I immediately went out and got her earlier books. A great read for those who like psychological thrillers. |
Fast-paced and thrilling, I really enjoyed this as I have the author's other work. I did manage to guess the twist early on, but it's always fun to continue reading to determine if you're right. This was another great reprieve from the romance and YA genres I usually binge. |
I was provided a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest and fair review. I had read this author's debut novel, Behind Closed Doors, a couple years ago and I really liked it, and that along with the really interesting cover influenced me to read this book. While there were some repetitive parts to the plot, overall I thought this was a really good books and the short chapters helped to move it along faster. This was definitely what I'd consider a creepy novel. I kind of guessed what direction we were moving in with the plot but still, leading up to the climax of the story I felt the terror and excitement of the characters in their race to discover the truth of what happened to Layla. I would say that the tension between the main characters felt just a tad stale just to me, there was almost a lack of emotion to some of the characters' interactions. It didn't detract at all from my enjoyment of the story though. I enjoyed this book a lot and I really liked the twist ending, I would definitely recommend it. |
Bring Me Back was a quick paced story, for rhe most part. It had enough twists and turns that I didn't have it all figured out exactly at the end. Some parts were a bit far fetched, but not overly so in my opinion. |
Overall, this book is good. For me, it became really good and unputdownable in the second part. I thought I knew what was going on and, more than once, I changed ideas, but I was nearly there! I kept my breath until the end of this book. I received an e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. |
