This really was a quick yet incredibly informative read. I'm only sorry I didn't read it sooner. This book will keep you going through all the difficult work now and ahead.

Purchased for teen section in my middle school library. A collection of essays and other content (songs, poems, illustrations, interviews etc.) from a variety of authors, activists, celebrities, and more, all aimed at discussing various facets of political resistance and how teenagers can get involved in political action

How I Resist is a perfectly crafted compilation of stories that moved me. This is something that will hopefully empower many young adults to make the changes they want to see in the world.

This book is very powerful and full of hope. It is a great way to help students begin to understand what is going on in our society and maybe what they can do about it. This is definitely a book I would recommend to have in the classroom!

This is a truly amazing book. The collection of essays are a perfect way to start a conversation with teens as well as other adults about activism and the issues facing our world today. What is so great about this particular selection of authors is that they share their story in a way that is sometimes fun, sincere, and insightful. No matter who is telling their tale, there is hope...we all need that.

I was pleasantly surprised that this collection spans a variety of genres. It has essays, poems, stories, interviews, and even a song! I was drawn to it because of the all-star cast of YA authors who contributed, but kept turning pages because I was interested in what they had to say. Hopefully the book will lit the fire under future activists so that they may raise their voices, raise awareness, and effect changes towards the causes they believe in.

Popular authors such as Jason Reynolds and more share their stories of how they resist during the current political climate. This is an anthology.

One of the main things I liked about this book was the diversity. Not just in the narrator's themselves and the experiences they were talking about. But, in the format and style.
With a mix of interviews, comic strips, stories and even a song, This book was well put together and in parts deeply emotional.

I really enjoyed How I Resist. I found this book to be empowering and a great read. I think this book was very inspiring and I hope many people read it.

This book is a great concept, but it fell a little shy. Mainly because the representation was very centralized.
in some ways, there is a lot of representation here in terms of gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality etc. Which is wonderful. However, for a book that is intended to be about political activism for American youth writ large, it very much lacks representation in terms of geography. The vast majority of the contributors are from New York or other coastal areas with almost no representation from middle America. And honestly, I think it shows. I also think it should have younger, teenage writers.

4.5 stars rounded up to 5.*

I don't know how I kept forgetting to read this book. It has everything I enjoy-wit, intelligence, empathy, compassion, and a little bit of snark.

A book intended to encourage the YA audience to take a look around, weigh what they see, hear and experience and then decide how to resist if/when/how they decide this is not the world they want to inherit as adults.

A series of essays, interviews, poems, comics, and songs, How I Resist is a really wonderful book aimed at iGen, intending to reach them in the ways that they communicate. I really enjoyed it and will be sharing it with my pre-teen and teenaged daughters. I learned a bit, laughed a bit and was inspired and made hopeful at a time when hope seems long past.

Not only WILL I recommend, I already have. This will be joining the Middle School and High School libraries at my girls' school courtesy of my donation.

*with thanks to NetGalley for the digital ARC in exchange for an honest review

Oh how I wish I had this when I was in high school. But what an incredible resource for teens and young adults right now. I'm so glad I read this (devoured more like) and am so awed at the compilation of diverse voices. I was so inspired after reading this that I'm going to urge every young adult I know to pick it up. It's a must read, for sure.

Our current political climate has left many of us disillusioned and hopeless. How I Resist is a timely anthology that encourages teens to take charge and be agents of change. The book features 30 diverse voices from a wide range of ethnicities, religion, sexual orientations, professional achievements, and even a few familiar celebrities. Each contributor shares their own definition of resistance, their own experiences encountering, and countering, various forms of injustice, and encourage readers to speak out and act against the same. Along with the diverse voices, the compendium also features essays, poems, music, interviews, comics, and other formats to address the topic of resistance. While some entries offer a step by step guide on how teens can enact change even if they are not old enough to vote, others like Jacqueline Woodson's interview suggest that change can start by having an open and honest conversation at home. The strongest entry in this anthology is by Maya Rupert who muses the problematic representation of Wonder Woman as a symbol of feminist power and diverse representation in all forms of media.

If read as an entire book, the anthology does become repetitive but it would work better if used in selection and excerpts for class discussion. It is clear that this work is driven by passion, honesty, and the yearn to do something instead of being a passive bystander.

I thought that this was a good and thoughtful book full of advice and stories that I think could be helpful to teens. Overall I preferred the interviews to the stories/poetry included, but I did enjoy some of those as well. I thought all the people who were included in this offered something to think about.

We’ve been working on building teen advocacy resources at our library, and this is a great accompaniment. What’s better than getting advice from authors you already know and love?! Much of the advice can also be used as a teen—when you might not have control of your time and transportation.

A stunning anthology with some of my favorite authors and voices of the modern resistance. It’s timely, important, and a book that left me thinking about what I can do to be a better citizen. Highly recommend.

Essential read!

I really enjoyed the format as much as the subject and personal essays. I liked that each contributor had their own style and tone which made it a very diverse collection. There was a lot more optimism than I was expecting which thrilled me as some days seem so bleak (politically) lately that it gave me a lot of hope.

This collection of interviews, art, songs, and essays is an on-point Call to Action for teens. A wide variety of role models share their best tips on being an activist with young readers.

*Jason Reynolds gives an amazing interview, including how his tattoo is his own form of activism.
*Javier Munoz shares what it was like to be backstage and hearing that Mike Pence had come to see Hamilton. I have so long wondered what the cast felt like that night, and I'm so glad he shared.
*Jacqueline Woodson is amazing, as always.

I loved this collection, and we'll feature it on the 6/7 episode of YA Cafe Podcast. You can find us on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts for our full thoughts.
