Leaf Litter Critters is a fun book of poems about decomposers and other related critters. This book would be great for upper elementary and middle school classrooms when discussing decomposers and/or life science related topics. The poems are informative and engaging & the last few pages contain more interesting research, information on poetry, and additional resources.

Lovely book of poems on unusual topics. I loved the science notes that accompany the poems and give details into the topics the poems cover. I am definitely going to recommend this book to my teachers as they study food webs and especially decomposers.

Leaf Litter Critters by Leslie Bulion is a fun and informative book. This is a great resource for upper elementary.  It is a book about decomposers. It teaches that decomposers are the critters that live in leaf piles and other natural waste. They help turn a leaf pile into nutrients for the soil. This book has poems that has to do with bugs, worms, fungi, bacteria and others that live in our backyards.

The last 10 pages include a glossary, poetry notes, which tell about all the different kinds of poems that were used, instructions on doing your own field work to find and observe the life in a leaf litter sample and resources for further reading.

If you know a child who loves bugs, or one who enjoys gardening or someone that is interested in composting or decaying debris, then this is the book for them. Full of information about how things decay and breakdown told in a variety of poems in a variety of formats. From bacteria to worms to pillbugs we learn how they adapt and live in the decaying piles and help the environment. The back of the book was full of amazing information. Facts about the different poetry styles (some I was not familiar with), a glossary, experiments and other resources will allow the reader to further investigate. The illustrations are wonderful and add so much to the information. My grandson kept asking about the pictures and wanted to know what they were called, what they were doing and if there were any outside in our back garden. Definitely a winner in his eyes.

The book gives a good introduction to decomposers and how natural plant materials breaks down. It have good illustrations but could have had more. Great science book for any children'snon-fiction collection.

I thought the text to picture ratio wasn’t great. The writing didn’t draw me in either.

Really fun and interesting take on science education. The illustrations are fun but not overdone, and the poems are catchy to keep a variety of ages engaged.

Unfortunately, I didn’t finish “Leaf Litter Critters.” I wasn’t a fan of the art or poetry. It just wasn’t for me.
