An interesting novel, and a rather ambitious one, too. Unfortunately, it didn't quite work for me - I wanted to like it a lot, but it didn't quite land, for some reason. It's interesting, has moments of excellence and great writing. I'd be interested in reading something else by the author in the future. |
I liked that this was set in a city I knew and loved. I liked the social commentary and that it showed the real side of some tough topics. Sometimes the plot took too long to get from point A to point B, but overall a good read. |
I think this book was a case of bad editing. There are many, many things that could be removed, and the plot was incoherent at times. The easiest way to describe it is chaotic. |
Thank you to NetGalley for this arc. Sorry. I dnf'd this book at 5% in. The writing I found choppy. Hurried. The editing was lacking, and could have been polished up more. The cover is stunning. And the description of Vancouver is pretty on point. I did honestly try to make it through the other perspectives in the book, but I just wasn't feeling it. |
Through the witty uncensored journey on On The Up, I loved the raw and charismatic journey of Jasminder, Carl and Mark as they fight through their circumstances head on. Devouring the minds of the characters from their perspective in Shilo Jones's book gave me a new dream for my writing - to be raw and mind boggling. “I am the thing itself. Without idea or image, theory or ideology. Just an object in motion. Existing before the conscious mind. That’s how I’m beginning to think of myself. One day I hope to stop thinking entirely. Thought removes us from our true selves.” On The Up captures the raw disclosure of grief, loyalty and heartaches. Within the characters lives, you meet so many people that you can connect with on both a mental and emotional level. I loved witnessing the minds of the characters as the storyline was fairly different from anything I have read recently as the way the book is presented and thought out is talked about differently. As many books have the narrator who talks about what they are doing, this book is narrated from the characters perspective and so are the actions so it was fairly different but I loved every moment. Overall, I would give this book 4/5 stars because I found it a raw and real read. The characters were amazingly relatable and I loved the plot of the entire story as it kept me intrigued the entire time. Great first voice for Shilo Jones’ book. |
The cover of this book is so beautiful! The book is fast-paced but the plot of this book was complex.. The story is written from three different perspectives; Jasminder, Carl and Mark. The chapters written from the point of view from Mark and Carl were a bit hard to get through. Also they were a bit over the top, so I didn't feel related to or invested in these characters. |
This cover is a piece of art, it hooks you in and even before I read the summary I wanted to read this book. The 3 different perspectives of this one goal was really interesting even though the transitions were a bit messy. This book was really interesting to read |
i read it in one day...and still i can't get over it...such a wonderful book |
This book played a number on me. It sent me on a wild chase and by the time it hit me that three people were all out to get the same thing, I felt like I needed a pot of coffee! I received an advance readers digital copy of the book from NetGalley, and there were some formatting issues that made the transition whilst reading such a chore. It'd be great to have each chapter that's introducing a character in bold and on it's own page. I would definitely recommend it to readers who love a concept of a rat race or a race against time, because this one will definitely get you going. |
Funny and insightful. The characters are crazy and unforgettable. Can’t wait for more from this author. . |
I found this book funny and complex. It involves 3 people who will stop at nothing to get what what they all! All after the same thing! It was quite humorous, with plenty of twists and turns along the way. I received an ARC copy from NetGalley for my honest opinion. All thoughts and opinions are my own. |
