A female survival book? Students will love this. A girl who has to live with a father she barely knows, then is left to survive by herself and her father's dog.

After a car accident that took away her mother's life and has left her injured, Jess is sent to live with her estranged father who lives in a cabin in a remote wilderness. Just when they started getting to know each other, her father ends up dead leaving her alone with his dog. She needs to survive and seek revenge to the person who killed her father.

This was a quick and easy read. The story is written in Jess' perspective and I really liked it. The "before" and "after" narration worked out perfectly as well. Jess is a great character. She made mistakes which was frustrating at times but it didn't stop me from rooting for her. Also, I liked the disability rep in this book. Some of the scenes were quite unbelievable but still entertaining to read. I personally didn't like the element of revenge in the story probably because I wasn't satisfied with how it was written. There were some action scenes that made me sit on the edge of my seat. The ending felt a little anti-climactic, in my opinion. But there's an incident towards the end that made me cry. I was somehow expecting it but it's still sad. Overall, this was an engaging read.

trigger warning: death of animals (graphic), car accident, ptsd, death of a parent

I received an Advanced Readers Copy of this book through NetGalley and Viking Books. Kate Alice Marshall has written a survival story of a young teen who is on her own in the Canada wilderness with a dog trying to figure out how to survive the winter. The story is told through alternating chapters of the past and now. She was in an awful car accident with her mother, who did not survive, then is sent to live with a foster family and finally with her father whom she doesn't know. Jess is starting to figure things out when her father is killed and she is on her own with his dog Bo. It is a well written survival book. I think it would be a great read for the teens in my school.

I love survival stories and this description of this book sounded great. However, I was disappointed in its execution. The plot seemed to plod along and Jess wasn't a very likeable character. I get it that her mom has died, she's injured and now she's gone to Alaska to live with a father she barely knew. But still. I didn't really care too much about what happened to her.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this book.

Thank you Netgalley for providing me with this ARC of I Am Still Alive by Kate Alice Marshall.

Jess has just lost her mom, and despite her desire to live out the rest of her underaged life with her friend, she is shipped off to Alaska to stay with her dad who she barely knows. As she slowly warms to him, he teaches her the essential tools she needs to survive in the harsh Alaskan wild. How to shoot a gun, hunt, fish, etc. He also re-introduces her to a previously loved sport, archery.

But Jess's father has been tangled up with the wrong people, and those people come for him not long after she moves in. Being left alone and forced to flee, Jess has to rely solely on her survival skills to make it in the remote Alaskan island she has been left on.

This book reminded me A LOT of another book that I read recently. However, I think I liked this one better. I am not a huge adventure and survivalist reader, but I was on the edge of my seat with this one, I could really feel what she was going through. I very much enjoyed it.

Jess is working to recover from crippling injuries received in the car crash that killed her mother. Authorities have contacted the father she hasn't seen in 10 years and who she does not really know. She finds herself living off the grid with her father in the Canadian wilderness with no way to return to civilization. Only a few days pass before she finds herself having to survive on her own with only her wits and a few remembered tips about surviving to draw upon.

The novel is told in journal form moving to her life before the pivotal moment that finds her fighting for survival and forward to her current situation. Jess is a very appealing character who never gives up despite the physical pain she suffers and the overwhelming obstacles before her.

I loved the premise of this book, but the story didn't hook me unfortunately, it was too slow for my taste.

Exciting, intense scenes, wonderfully described setting. Learn survival techniques with the characters. Only negative for me was main character was too "whiny"--could have shown growth without that.

Omg this was a wild ride! Similar to the premise of the Hatchet, with a wicked revenge/murderous twist. A survival story that will stay with me!

This was an interesting story. Character has to face a lot of challenges and tough choices. Nice survival story. Jumps back and forth between before the "bad thing" happens namely her dad being murdered. Quick enough read but not a fan of jumping back and forth between story. Seems a little choppy because of this. Think many will enjoy it.

The story is nice. It had much more potential though. Lovely writing.
The characters are adorable.

This story of a teen fighting to survive in the Canadian wilderness would have been much more satisfying if the main character was not feeling so sorry for herself all the time. Yes, she has had some seriously tough breaks with losing her mom and I get that she was dealing with horrible pain from her injuries, but I got so sick of her whining and complaining that I was really having trouble caring about her as a character.

I really enjoyed this book. A quick read, I finished it in a day or two because I was so hooked on the main character's struggle throughout the wilderness. I liked that the main character suffers from a disability due to a car accident and you struggle with her as she gradually becomes stronger throughout the book. A dark tale, but a story about strength of character and will.

*This book was given to me by NetGalley in return for a honest review*

I enjoy survival stories and the premise sounded to me like a more complicated version of The Hatchet. Jess dealing with the loss of her beloved mother in a car accident that left her maimed, is sent to live with her father who abandoned her as a small child. For reasons I won't say, she is left alone to survive in the wilderness. It should have been a home run, and I'm not saying I didn't enjoy it, there were some parts didn't come off as realistic for me. However, It's still worth a read and I purchased it for my library.

Interesting survival story. Really liked the survival aspect even though Jess is not my favorite character. Fast paced and fun to read.

"I am still alive" is Jess' mantra as she finds herself in the middle of the Alaskan or Canadian woods. She is in not sure exactly where she is. Everyone she loves is dead and no one is looking for her except maybe some bad guys. This is one of my favorite YA novel so far this year. I like that Jess has physical limitations and she is not experienced on how to survive in the wilderness by herself. Yet, she perseveres even though she has many setbacks and nearly dies 10 times over. I loved reading this novel as an adult and I think teens would love this novel too. I think this was a fast exciting book that will appeal to all readers. I loved it and I cant wait to read more from Kate Alice Marshall

After losing her mother in a car accident, and trying to recover from her own horrible injuries, Jess is sent to Alaska to live with her father off the grid. When he is murdered and the cabin burned to the ground, Jess barely escapes. The reality of her situation quickly hits, and she realizes everything she has to do to survive.

This was a really great book. The Before and After that the author used worked well to build up the story line. I thought Jess was a very interesting character, one I found myself able to relate and connect with. Overall, 5 stars!

Alone in the wilderness after six days and only herself and a husky wolf dog to survive . Jess has to find the strength to make it through each day in hopes of getting her revenge on the person who killed her father and ever being rescued. Jess is a well written character who is strong and will not give up. A page turner you will not want to put down.

The sense of danger and tension in this book simmers throughout as Jess has to figure out how to survive in the wilderness after her father dies. She's alone, she's still recovering from injuries sustained in the car crash that killed her mother, and she has very few survivalist skills. But she wants to live- and she's going to figure out how. A super fast read, the sense of isolation and place is very strong and readers will be desperate to know if Jess succeeds at surviving.

this was INTENSELY good but also very upsetting. but so good. this young girl, fresh from a really traumatic car accident, has to survive in the wilds of canada by herself for a long ass time when she can barely walk and it's amazing and inspiring and also legit terrifying half the time but amazing. the way the story is not quite linear for the first half as she chronicles current situation and past leading up to the moment where everything went awful is really well done. she's incredibly well written as are the settings, the tiny parts played by other characters and the action.
