I like how Lemire is handling the character of Bloodshot, especially with the parenthood angle. There was something I was mixed on, but can't quite place my finger on what it was, though.

'Bloodshot Salvation, Vol. 1: The Book of Revenge' by Jeff Lemire with art by Lewis LaRosa and Mico Suayan is a story about a man who just wants to move on in his life, but just keeps getting pulled back in to his old life.

Poor Ray Garrison just wants to have a life. The nanites are under control. He's got a wife, and now he has a baby daughter. When his wife starts getting threatening phone calls, Ray decides he has to do something about it. The problem is that Ray's wife Magic needs him, especially when their daughter starts showing Bloodshot traits. It's a story that goes back and forth in time and has some surprising enemies and allies.

There were two distinct art styles and I preferred one over the other. I liked the story that got told, even if it was just a part one. I wouldn't mind reading the rest of this story.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Valiant Entertainment, Diamond Book Distributors, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

While I had trouble keeping up at times with the messy writing, I really enjoyed the characters and story this told. Switching perspectives between father and daughter, the plot was well done.

Really just a continuation of the previous Bloodshot Reborn series by Jeff Lemire. I guess the renumbering is because this is meant to focus on Bloodshot's family. Bloodshot and Magic are living in rural Minnesota raising their baby daughter Jessie. Magic is receiving stalker calls from her father which Ray decides to do something about. The current time is drawn by Lewis Larosa. The book is also set in the future with a focus on an adolescent Jessie and Magic drawn by Mico Suayan. The book ends in the middle of the story. I'd rather have seen this collected as a whole but that's Valiant for you.

My Review:
I wasn't really sure what I was getting into when I started this book, but I'm not disappointed. In this book, there's a lot of death. And when I say a lot of death, I really mean, A LOT OF DEATH. It's bloody, gory, and dangerous, and also really exciting and I couldn't wait to see what happened next. There's a lot of jumping around story wise, but there's also a lot of backstory and intense scenes.

Ray used to be a bloodshot, a vicious killing machine, and he didn't have a choice. One day, there wasn't anymore bloodshot. The people around him are chasing something, and one day he gets a scary phone call from someone named Daddy, who claims to be Magic, his partner's father and says scary things about his new daughter. This obviously makes him angry and fearful, and he sets off to kill him after hearing the gruesome stories from Magic. In the present day, Magic is on the run with Jessie, Ray and her own daughter, who is also a bloodshot. It's a dangerous life, and a lot of death. Everything changed the day they met Punk Mambo. Overall I really enjoyed reading this book, and think you should check it out if you think you'll like it.

I like the relaunch of Bloodshot even more than the original run of this Valiant character. Well worth reading.

If you once had a love of the superhero genre that has since waned due to overlong, bloated movies then the graphic novel 'Bloodshot Salvation Vol 1: The Book of Revenge' (Collecting issues 1 - 5) well may well be the reading prescription that you need to make all well with the universe again. Within, if I am honest, none too flattering covers lies a narrative which is ambitious, highly engaging and respectful in treating its audience with the sophistication that it deserves. The stunning artwork is both dark and vibrant, if such a thing is possible. I haven't been this excited about a superhero comic since Alan Moore broke the rule book with 'Watchmen' and Brian Michael Bendis found a fresh way of telling the familiar in 'Ultimate Spiderman'.
'Bloodshot Salvation' is the story of a superhero trying to turn his back on his status, trying to live an ordinary family life. As with all such narratives, this is of course impossible. The graphic novel gives equal space and time to both Bloodshot and his girlfriend, and mother of his daughter, Magic. The narrative is also about, as the title suggests, revenge, and perhaps more surprisingly, parenting.
No previous knowledge of the character of Bloodshot is required to enjoy this collection.
I stumbled across Jeff Lemire's work a few years ago with the wonderfully sad 'Sweet Tooth'. Having now read 'Bloodshot Salvation' I must say that I would be surprised to find a finer comic book writer working today. I am off to seek out everything else that Lemire has written.
'Bloodshot Salvation: The Book of Revenge Vol. 1' is due for publication on 27 March in the UK by Valiant.

I had an issue with the DRM on this book and was unable to open it on my devices. I reached out to Diamond Book Distributors with no response for 2+ weeks so unfortunately have been unable to complete this ARC. I'll happily edit this review if that changes.

So…there’s a lot of blood in Bloodshot. Who woulda’ thunk it?

Having read virtually no Valiant titles except for Faith:Hollywood and Vine, I only had a passing recognition of Bloodshot, but no real understanding of who he was or his backstory. I picked up this digital copy because Jeff Lemire (who must be an android and not sleep because his output of titles is amazing) is the author and I’m a sucker for a good revenge story.

Bloodshot aka Ray Garrison is a former soldier who worked for the shadowy Project Rising Spirit, and whose nanites in his bloodstream could transform him into a killing machine with healing powers (shades of Wolverine from Marvel). His memory has been wiped several times, but he has escaped from the decommissioned PRS in the previous Reborn series, and has established a family with his girlfriend Magic. They have a baby daughter who seems to be perfectly healthy and free of Ray’s powers.

It’s all too good to be true, and frankly Ray decides to f**k everything up by going after Magic’s father who is a cult leader and has been harassing her to rejoin his compound. Plans go sideways, his daughter Jessie gets sick and PRS gets new funding and doesn’t want any former soldiers on the loose. There are time jumps, transfigurations and many many deaths. Then there is the required twist and cliff hanger to make you come back for future volumes.

The artwork is excellent, with a gritty realism and a subdued color palate. The artists are very fond of exploding eyeballs and showcasing gore. But I do have a complaint: the front cover is misleading. It shows Jessie as a young girl with the trademark white skin next to her father. This scene did not happen, and in fact, Jessie has not seen her Dad in years at this point. While I assume they will be reuniting in the next volume, this cover was very inaccurate.

I’m glad I had a chance to read this title through NetGalley, as supposedly Vin Diesel is signed on to portray Bloodshot in a movie adaptation, and now I have a passing understanding of the Bloodshot saga. I’m rooting for Ray’s family to have a happy ending, but we all know it won’t come easy.

Bloodshot Salvation Vol. 1: The Book of Revenge by Jeff Lemire picks up from where Bloodshot Reborn leaves off and just kicks the story into another gear. Visceral and bloody and just overall a trip into the darker recesses of mankind. Bloodshot may not be a character his original writers recognize any longer and that is just fine. Because this one brings so much more to the table than just the autocratic soldier assassin.

Ray Garrison is done being Bloodshot and looking forward to the one thing he thought he would never have an opportunity to have. A family. But the past has a way of coming for the things you love and now Ray has to turn back into the thing he was to save his family.

Ray must battle Magic's estranged family and their hold on her. He must also deal with the fear that they will want his child as well. A family inbred and violent, Ray must face them to free Magic and his child. But while he is gone, the government is figuring out that the nanobots have passed from Ray to his child and they now want the child Bloodshot.

Lemire writes with dark and perverted abandon and in doing so tells a story that is as compelling as it is revolting. This is not the Bloodshot of generations pass. This is a new, dirtier Bloodshot that will leave you wanting much much more!

A terrific comic that will have the reader always looking for more!

Well, I didn't realize this was a sequel series until I started reading it. That's ok though, because you can pretty much figure out what is going on without having to read the original Bloodshot: basically the main character, Ray AKA Bloodshot is Wolverine, with nanites replacing Adamantium.
Lots of rage, lots of killing, lots of gross closeups of eyeballs flying out of people's heads.

Jeff Lemire is a personal favorite of mine; loved this graphic novel. Cannot wait for more!

The way this story was told was different as it switched between the present day scenes and the ones known as "soon". I liked how it switched focus between the dad and the daughter and i'd definitely look at a second volume if one was released. The story was a bit messy at times but i did like how the style was throughout the graphic novel.

In Bloodshot Salvation Vol. 1: the Book of Revenge, Bloodshot looks like the nanomachine ridden killing machine may finally have a shot of happiness. A new wife and a new baby, he's living under the name Ray and all seems well. A dark figure from his wife's past threatens his wife and revenge is on the menu. Like a bloody, violent, nonstop action movie, the story unfolds with complications and unforeseen consequences all around. A cliff hanger leaves you wondering if Bloodshot's family will survive. The art portrays the bloody, gory story to perfection and the story leaves you hanging on for more, totally addictive and definitely not for kids. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from Netgalley.

You know what, I almost doubted Jeff Lemire at the start of this book. I thought a combination of The Punisher and Wolverine would be beneath him, but add in the redneck horror, introduce all the multiple story strands here, and combine it with everything else you'd expect of a Valiant book, and you have a firmly fun read. Of course, it goes without saying that that 'everything else Valiant' is the weakness here – I still have no idea who is what, where SHIELD (sorry, GATE) fits into things and why I should even give Ninja K houseroom. But those elements of what is a clunky and actually quite poor universe still come across well on these pages. You can hope for clarity as to Valiant til the cows get shot, but Lemire does what he's known for, so in the end all is well with the world. Although ending on a "cliffhanger" we know to be patently false is a bit of a duff closing beat.

This is my first introduction to the work ofJeff Lemire and indeed, Bloodshot, but wow what an introduction. A violent graphic novel that is beautifully drawn and tell the story of a man on the run, hiding from his past. A brilliantly realised, action packed story that finishes on a cliff hanger.

A new Bloodshot story arc which is great for Bloodshot fans. In this new episode Bloodshot has found a way to control the nanites in his blood and he is suppressing them and living a quiet life with his partner Magic and his new baby girl.

Life is quiet and life is good until Bloodshot stumbles across some pain from Magic's past. Her abusive father and cult leader (Daddy) has tracked her down he wants her back, both her and her baby. She tries unsuccessfully to hide this but when Bloodshot finds out he leaves Magic and the baby and turns the tables on Daddy. Bloodshot wants revenge and as can be expected everything goes downhill from there.

Bloodshot's departure leaves Magic and baby open to other enemies. A new enemy has arisen and is in the process of hunting them down and with Bloodshot nowhere to be seen how will Magic and the baby survive?

It is a good story because comics from the Valiant world always are. There is some time jumping which is a bit hard to follow. It seems as if this book is telling a story from the past and one from the future. I think this will become clearer as the series develops. It will be good to see how this story arc pans out.

Great art with good colouring as can be expected from Valiant. It makes for a very enjoyable reading experience even if you don't get all the twists and turns (like me)
