An exciting adventure, a unique locale and a mysterious murder! This book kept me on the edge of my seat! |
Spectacle is quite different to a lot of the graphic novels I’ve read in the past. There are no superheroes or capes, just a girl in a circus trying to figure out who murdered her sister. The story in this did take me a while to warm up to. In fact, it took me the entire first volume to really get on board with it. I enjoyed the artwork and the setting, however, so that was enough to keep me reading. The bright colours and cartoony style really fit the circus setting, and were a pleasure to look at. The story, on the other hand, was a tad slow to pick up and seemed to meander for a bit before really getting into the meat of it. The sisterly bond between Anna and Kat’s ghost is really apparent, and I liked the dynamic the two had. By herself, Anna was a bit bland throughout this volume, but I’m putting that down to the sombre nature of the story and her grief for her twin. Kat was much more lively on the page, but she also seemed to balance Anna out and round her off nicely. I think reading the second volume would definitely help increase my enjoyment of this story and world, because right now all there is to say is ‘I liked it’. Volume one was a nice introduction and I’d be interested to see where things go. |
'Spectacle vol. 1' with story and art by Megan Rose Gedris is a graphic novel about sisters, circus and murder. Anna works as a psychic in a circus with her sister, Kat. Kat has a knife throwing act, but when she is found dead on the floor of their trailer, Anna is left to figure out who did it. Anna also discovers she can see the dead, starting with her sister. There are a lot of suspects in the crew around her. I liked this quirky story with it's quirky characters. Anna is a very likeable character. I also liked the stylish, colorful art. I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Oni Press and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel. |
With thanks to Netgalley and Oni Press for allowing me to review this book. Spectacle Vol.1 is a stunning illustrated graphic novel that I enjoyed reading. |
I think the main thing I loved about this is the artwork. Don't get me wrong, the story was really grabbing and intriguing but the artwork wads astounding. I love when artists use lots of colour and make their artwork bold. This had a mix of genres - mystery/ thriller which some fantasy and humour as well which is why it's so good I love when books bring in multiple genres. Just wished it didn't need to abruptly - I do realise this is volume one but every book, or graphic novel in this case, should have a good ending - whether or not it's going to continue or not. |
This book tells the story of two identical twins who are part of a circus. Art wise, it’s stunning, I love both the drawings and the way everything was colored. Story wise, it’s fun. It has mystery elements but I also cracked a smile a few times. Character wise, they’re a part of an intricate web of relationships. All in all, this book was really fun and I liked it as an introduction to be a possible series. Rating: 4 stars |
This graphic novel is about two twins sisters, Anna and Kat, who live in a circus. Kat is an expert at throwing knives and Anna works as a fortune teller. When Kat is murdered in their room, Anna decides to find the killer. Then, the spirit of her sister appears in front of her and becomes part of Anna’s body. Kat doesn’t remember anything of what happened so the two sister join forces to find Kat’s murderer. The art style of this graphic novel was beautiful, it surprised me in a good way. The story was engaging and the characters were interesting. I could not put the graphic novel down so I read it in one sitting. My biggest disappointment with this book is that it ended in an abrupt cliffhanger. You don’t know who killed Kat neither why Anna can suddenly see ghosts. It was obviously saving room for the next volume but I was expecting to get some more answers in the end. Still, if the unresolved mystery doesn’t bother you, you should check out spectacle, I really enjoyed it. |

The story line lagged. It was hard to keep interested. I just reviewed Spectacle Vol. 1 by Megan Rose Gedris. #SpectacleVol1 #NetGalley [NetGalley URL] |
I'm been a fan of Gedris's work for years and I was thrilled to get a chance to read volume 1 of Spectacle. Her artwork is unlike any other I've encountered throughout the many graphic novels I've read and I'm happy to say that this full-length GN only showcases her skills. The plot was very interesting and I'm looking forward to seeing where the next volume (or more!) takes us. Gedris has been drawing comics for years now and has always put time and effort to make sure that she has a diverse cast of characters with fleshed-out personalities, desires, and needs. Those looking to pad their libraries or classrooms with graphic novels featuring characters of color, some of whom also identify as LGBT, will not want to pass over Spectacle, Vol. 1, nor any of Gedris's work to come. |
I wasn't familiar with webcomic creator Megan Rose Gedris prior to picking up Spectacle so I wasn't sure what to expect. Overall, I enjoyed the ride with this particular circus and its various performers. With as many side characters as were woven into this first volume of the story, I was impressed at how well Gedris made many of them feel like unique characters rather than cardboard stereotypes. The supernatural elements of the story were introduced slowly so that the reader could be concerned along with the logically minded Anna as events ramped up. The art is of a more comic style, with the kind of "cute" style that I tend to associate with stories like Lumberjanes. I never fell completely in love with Spectacle but it's a good start to an interesting murder mystery comic and I'll be curious enough to see where Gedris goes with it. |
I love murder mysteries and I love graphic novels so it’s no surprise that I ADORED this book! I’ll certainly be checking out more |
I wasn’t able to download this title in time to get the arc, I did grab a copy from another library and I will absolutely be putting this title on our list. It’s a fun, murder mystery, I really enjoyed the artwork and the coloring is perfect. The story is very layered, I loved getting background on the circus members. The way this story is developing allows for a lot of growth, I am very much so looking forward to that! I thought I had a clue on who killed Kat but nope, I’ll just have to keep reading! Hurry Gedris, we’ve got a murder to solve! |

Megan Gedris' art style fits well with the oddball circus cast. The transition from webcomic to graphic novel is well done, as her previous books have been. |
Great art style, an atmospheric environment and a good story. This series was both humorous and creepy in parts. I'll definitely pick up the next volume to see what happens next. |
I didn't know this was a webcomic but EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS WAS AMAZING! I seriously can't get over how amazing it was. I 100% have to now go out and by the other volumes because I need to know what happens! |
I LOVED this story! The characters were wonderful and I can't wait to read the next part of their adventure. |
Spectacle (vol. 1) is a story about sisters, Anna (a “psychic”) and Kat (a knife thrower), who work in a circus. One night, Kat, was murdered by getting literally stabbed in the back. (It’s kinda ironic how she’s the one throwing knives but she died with knives being thrown at her.) Anna is determined to find out who the murderer is among them. But there are more things to happen in that complicated circus of theirs. I’ve never really been a fan of comics or graphic novels so I didn’t know what to expect from this one. But when I saw that it wasn’t just an ordinary comic with a normal plot, I wanted to read it. Sisters. Mystery. A circus setting. Sign me up! :”) At first, I thought this book was a bit slow but after the murdered happened, things started to get interesting. Of course, I have my theories and suspicions. Right now, I can’t really confirm because I’ve only read the first volume but I expect the following volume to give me more clues to connect. The art was very different from what I expected. It was fresh and new to my eyes. It’s nice to see various art styles every now and then. I also liked the diversity of the characters. Not only was there a representation of POC but you can also sense the representation of the LGBTQ+ community. Each character was diverse with different personalities which made them unique individuals. I see myself growing to like and hate some characters in this comics as it progresses. The comics as a whole was great but the cliffhanger ruined it for me because to be honest, the anticipation is killing me. I can’t wait to read the next volume so I can have more insight and solve the mystery along with Anna so Kat can get the justice she deserves. This comic is a short and quick read, starts off slow but speeds up eventually. Stuff gets serious. A murder happens a dead person is involved. But it doesn’t end there. So join me in awaiting the next volume of this cool and mysterious comic. Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read more comics. :") |
❛ Nothing coffee can't fix. Also, heroin! I'll be right back with that. ❜ This comic is the definition of zero to one hundred real quick. It starts off, if I'm being honest, with a dull introduction of our main character that screams of wannabe edginess. There's something quite kitsch about this first panel. You can tell that it wants to draw you in, but doesn't quite have the umph to do it. First impressions are usually the only impressions, so I went into this not expecting too much. Boy was I surprised. As the comic goes on the quality of it goes up. The illustrations are more creative, the story is more fleshed out and the readers actually start to feel something. It gains the umph. This book puts on a show and dazzles the readers with plots that jump out of no where. There's so so much going on but it doesn't feel like there's too too much going on if y'know what I mean? That's not to say that it's perfect but it is a brilliantly fun little ride – perfect for reading in one go. |
Unfortunately I could not read this book as my download expired on Adobe Digital Editions. I apologise for the inconvenience. |
I wasn't completely sold on this comic when I first picked it up but I'm really glad that I took the time to read it. If you're a fan of paranormal mysteries and creepy circus tropes then I think you will really enjoy this. The artwork is lovely and really fits the style of the comic. It's creepy but in an amusing way and I was definitely intrigued by the 'whodunnit' aspect of the plot although to be honest I'm more interested in the sisterly dynamic between the two main characters. I look forward to reading the next issue when it comes out. |
