Rating a 3 for fairness as I’m unable to post without the star rating. Unfortunately I had a lot of difficulty with getting this book to actually load with the format - even with Adobe Digital Reader. The book seems to cut off before the actual ending as well, so I didn’t get to finish it.

A shift in genre for me, Spectacle Vol. 1 introduces the cast & crew of the Samson Brothers circus.

A great launch into the circus, we meet a variety of the characters and devour snippets of their backstories.

Like many other Circus Sideshows, the Samson Brothers show has that PT Barnum style, with conjoined twins, knife throwers, clowns and a bearded lady, too.

We follow our protagonist Anna, the pragmatic engineer~psychic, after she finds her sister, Kat, dead on their trailer floor, seemingly murdered with one of the knives from her own routine.

We follow Anna as she tries to solve the mystery of her sisters death with the help of Kat’s ghost, dealing with her grief a long the way.

Through the loss of her sister, Anna forged new friendships, especially that of Flora.

The ending felt rather abrupt and mysterious, however I believe this may have been intentional, with a few leads in the murder mystery I look forward to following Anna into the next volume and hope we can explore her personality a little more, aside from when she’s with Kat/ her clairvoyance.

Whilst this graphic novel doesn’t appear to have explicit LGBTQ+ characters depicted in volume one, the art style lends itself to the belief that at least some of the characters are queer-coded (looking at you, Jebediah, Gideon & Flora) I look forward to hopefully exploring this theory in volume two!

Thank you Oni Press and NetGalley for the advanced electronic review copy of this book. I expected to enjoy this murder mystery much more than I actually did. Not sure what went wrong. I wasn’t crazy about the circus/carnival theme. Also, the art, the writing, and the abrupt ending felt somewhat awkward to me. I don’t think I would continue with the series.

I want to thank Netgalley and the publisher for this book. I loved this graphic novel and really enjoyed the story. What pulled me to reading this graphic novel was the cover and I really enjoyed the illustrations. I felt that the author did an amazing job in making the illustrations flow easily with the text. I love anything supernatural and the combination of the mystery of finding Kat's murder really made me love reading it. I always thought the idea of a ghost helping to solve their murder would be an interesting concept to develop. I would recommend this novel to anyone who loves mystery and supernatural elements and who can appreciate the art work.

I really enjoyed the plot with the supernatural mixed with the murder mystery mixed with the circus setting, it made for a really interesting situation that I would love to know more about. Keep in mind that this ends with no resolution so expect to need the second volume to get more into what is going on with the story. I will say that I was not a fan of the main character Anna, sure she was super smart and independent but she was kinda mean and judgy at the same time and rubbed me the wrong way. Also I was a little bit surprised that the cover art which originally drew me to the book did not really match the style of the art inside the book which was a little sad. I am intrigued enough with the plot and the supernatural stuff to pick up the next volume

Spectacle is quite different to a lot of the graphic novels I’ve read in the past. There are no superheroes or capes, just a girl in a circus trying to figure out who murdered her sister.

The story in this did take me a while to warm up to. In fact, it took me the entire first volume to really get on board with it. I enjoyed the artwork and the setting, however, so that was enough to keep me reading. The bright colours and cartoony style really fit the circus setting, and were a pleasure to look at. The story, on the other hand, was a tad slow to pick up and seemed to meander for a bit before really getting into the meat of it.

The sisterly bond between Anna and Kat’s ghost is really apparent, and I liked the dynamic the two had. By herself, Anna was a bit bland throughout this volume, but I’m putting that down to the sombre nature of the story and her grief for her twin. Kat was much more lively on the page, but she also seemed to balance Anna out and round her off nicely.

I think reading the second volume would definitely help increase my enjoyment of this story and world, because right now all there is to say is ‘I liked it’. Volume one was a nice introduction and I’d be interested to see where things go.

'Spectacle vol. 1' with story and art by Megan Rose Gedris is a graphic novel about sisters, circus and murder.

Anna works as a psychic in a circus with her sister, Kat. Kat has a knife throwing act, but when she is found dead on the floor of their trailer, Anna is left to figure out who did it. Anna also discovers she can see the dead, starting with her sister. There are a lot of suspects in the crew around her.

I liked this quirky story with it's quirky characters. Anna is a very likeable character. I also liked the stylish, colorful art.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Oni Press and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

This book tells the story of two identical twins who are part of a circus.

Art wise, it’s stunning, I love both the drawings and the way everything was colored.

Story wise, it’s fun. It has mystery elements but I also cracked a smile a few times.

Character wise, they’re a part of an intricate web of relationships.

All in all, this book was really fun and I liked it as an introduction to be a possible series.

Rating: 4 stars

This graphic novel is about two twins sisters, Anna and Kat, who live in a circus. Kat is an expert at throwing knives and Anna works as a fortune teller. When Kat is murdered in their room, Anna decides to find the killer. Then, the spirit of her sister appears in front of her and becomes part of Anna’s body. Kat doesn’t remember anything of what happened so the two sister join forces to find Kat’s murderer.

The art style of this graphic novel was beautiful, it surprised me in a good way. The story was engaging and the characters were interesting. I could not put the graphic novel down so I read it in one sitting.

My biggest disappointment with this book is that it ended in an abrupt cliffhanger. You don’t know who killed Kat neither why Anna can suddenly see ghosts. It was obviously saving room for the next volume but I was expecting to get some more answers in the end.

Still, if the unresolved mystery doesn’t bother you, you should check out spectacle, I really enjoyed it.

I wasn’t able to download this title in time to get the arc, I did grab a copy from another library and I will absolutely be putting this title on our list. It’s a fun, murder mystery, I really enjoyed the artwork and the coloring is perfect. The story is very layered, I loved getting background on the circus members. The way this story is developing allows for a lot of growth, I am very much so looking forward to that! I thought I had a clue on who killed Kat but nope, I’ll just have to keep reading! Hurry Gedris, we’ve got a murder to solve!

Great art style, an atmospheric environment and a good story. This series was both humorous and creepy in parts. I'll definitely pick up the next volume to see what happens next.

Spectacle (vol. 1) is a story about sisters, Anna (a “psychic”) and Kat (a knife thrower), who work in a circus. One night, Kat, was murdered by getting literally stabbed in the back. (It’s kinda ironic how she’s the one throwing knives but she died with knives being thrown at her.) Anna is determined to find out who the murderer is among them. But there are more things to happen in that complicated circus of theirs.

I’ve never really been a fan of comics or graphic novels so I didn’t know what to expect from this one. But when I saw that it wasn’t just an ordinary comic with a normal plot, I wanted to read it. Sisters. Mystery. A circus setting. Sign me up! :”)

At first, I thought this book was a bit slow but after the murdered happened, things started to get interesting. Of course, I have my theories and suspicions. Right now, I can’t really confirm because I’ve only read the first volume but I expect the following volume to give me more clues to connect.

The art was very different from what I expected. It was fresh and new to my eyes. It’s nice to see various art styles every now and then. I also liked the diversity of the characters. Not only was there a representation of POC but you can also sense the representation of the LGBTQ+ community. Each character was diverse with different personalities which made them unique individuals. I see myself growing to like and hate some characters in this comics as it progresses.

The comics as a whole was great but the cliffhanger ruined it for me because to be honest, the anticipation is killing me. I can’t wait to read the next volume so I can have more insight and solve the mystery along with Anna so Kat can get the justice she deserves.

This comic is a short and quick read, starts off slow but speeds up eventually. Stuff gets serious. A murder happens a dead person is involved. But it doesn’t end there. So join me in awaiting the next volume of this cool and mysterious comic.

Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read more comics. :")

❛ Nothing coffee can't fix. Also, heroin! I'll be right back with that. ❜

This comic is the definition of zero to one hundred real quick. It starts off, if I'm being honest, with a dull introduction of our main character that screams of wannabe edginess. There's something quite kitsch about this first panel. You can tell that it wants to draw you in, but doesn't quite have the umph to do it. First impressions are usually the only impressions, so I went into this not expecting too much. Boy was I surprised.

As the comic goes on the quality of it goes up. The illustrations are more creative, the story is more fleshed out and the readers actually start to feel something. It gains the umph. This book puts on a show and dazzles the readers with plots that jump out of no where. There's so so much going on but it doesn't feel like there's too too much going on if y'know what I mean? That's not to say that it's perfect but it is a brilliantly fun little ride – perfect for reading in one go.
