Another entry into the ever-expanding field of SOF sniper novels. Like a number of those that have come before, this novel benefits from the author's experience as a SOF sniper. Irving and Tata do a decent job of bringing to life a revered sniper - Vick Harwood - who has 33 kills in a 90 day period, earning him the moniker "The Reaper".

Harwood and his spotter are sent to find a mercenary that is on the top of everyone's list. As they are getting close, things go wrong and they come under fire from a mortar attack., but just before they are knocked unconscious and Harwood is separated from his spotter, they see something strange. that doesn't make sense.

Waking up in the hospital, Harwood's spotter is missing and his whereabouts unknown. What follows is a web of stories, twists, and turns that get Harwood involved in some difficult situations stateside. However, the Reaper is still suffering from memory loss and has trouble recalling what he saw just before they were attacked. If he can remember, it will serve as one large piece of the puzzle to help him uncover the conspiracy and corruption in his midst.

Overall a pretty interesting novel that keeps your turning the pages but there were some things off that seemed like small mistakes the authors and their researchers did not bother fully vetting. I would say 3* for a good weekend/beach/airplane read. I think Irving has a strong basis for a character that we could see again. I will be interested to see what he does next.

Wow! Exhausting. Nonstop action from beginning to end. The book is a “standalone“ so previous books in the series do not affect its enjoyment. I read it in four days, with sleep and food optional I highly recommend it, and will read other books by these authors.

This is the first book by either Nicholas Irving or A.J. Tata that I have read. I have read much praise of the latter, but with him just appearing as a second-tier co-author on this book, I must assume that Irving is primarily responsible for the novel.
I will make this review fairly short by summing up that I was fairly well entertained as the pages flew by, but the plot has so many reality gaps and shortcuts that I was never truly convinced by the twists and false leads that Irving included in the story.
Fans of e.g. Brad Taylor might like this book as well as the series it appears to be the first part of, but if you are more into geopolitical terrorism and suspense, as in books by Vince Flynn and Brad Thor, you will be left wanting by this book.
