THE BIG ALPHA IN TOWN is an enjoyable collection of different kind of shapeshifters with stories by Eve Langlais, Milly Taiden, and Kate Baxter. Readers who want stories about some of the supporting characters in this anthology should also check out THANKS FUR LAST NIGHT -- also by the same authors. Each story strikes a different tone -- from slightly screwball comedy to ominous and spooky -- but all sexy.

"Bearing His Love" by Eve Langlais takes a turn I never would have expected. The opening of this story, with mysterious letters and a hint of blackmail, had me gearing up for a romance with a tangled and dark twist. However, Eve Langlais delivers a story with just as many laughs as there are thrills. The male characters in "Bearing His Love" are the only shifters, and their oversized personalities match their larger-than-life animal alter egos. Greek bear shifter Ark Matis is gobsmacked when, instead of some scheming woman with designs on his fortune, he finds prickly Jade Cadeux and wants to devour her. The quick-witted banter between Jade and Ark make this story so entertaining. The secondary characters make this story shine without distracting from the main couple. As this is a new-to-me author, I look forward to reading more shifter love stories by Eve Langlais in the future.

In "Owned by the Lion", Milly Taiden gives paranormal romance a conventional tale of girl meets lion. Ally and Keir know the same people and have been on the periphery until they finally get up close and personal in this story. Keir does a hard sell in a totally subtle and seductive way that eventually wins him the woman of his dreams. It's a classic story of an earnest, hard-working woman charmed by the suave playboy/boy-next-door hero. I like how captivated Keir is by Ally and how he works hard to woo her. Friends and family offer support in this story and play cupid. As with the story by Eve Langlais, the hero in this story is a shifter but the heroine is human.

Out of all the stories in this anthology, I was most looking forward to "No Need Fur Love" by Kate Baxter, because I'm a huge fan of her "Last True Vampire" series. This is a lust-to-love story with a spooky edge and fairy tale vibe. When a wood nymph and a werewolf lock lips and discover they are fated mates, complicated doesn't begin to cover it. Mia thought having Owen knock her up would solve a few of her problems, but it just added new ones. Papa wood nymph makes a perfect and completely sinister villain and potential father-in-law for Owen. Betrayal and loyalty are crucial to this battle of good versus evil, and a happy ending winning out. The chemistry between this couple rocks, and the haunted woodland atmosphere will give you chills.

THE BIG ALPHA IN TOWN is a fun, furry, and fabulous collection of alpha heroes of all stripes and heroines who can go toe-to-toe with their hulking heroes. These stories will give you a sample of paranormal yummy -- beastly brawls, fated love, and a story you can sink your teeth into. I look forward to reading more shifter romances by these authors.

I read the first anthology by these three ladies and loved it, so I couldn’t wait to read The Big Alpha in Town and visit the characters again! And the stories were even better than before and I definitely loved this anthology more. The Big Alpha in Town was absolutely fantastic and I hope we get a third collection from Ms. Langlais, Taiden, and Baxter!

We started once again with Eve Langlais and her “Bearing His Name.” It was full of humor, fun, and silliness. I loved Ark’s playfulness and his unapologetic, amusing arrogance and Jade’s feisty fierceness. They made a great couple and I loved them and their story. I can’t wait for more to come!

Next up is Milly Taiden’s “Owned By the Lion” and let me tell you, I was so excited for this one! I couldn’t wait for Keir to get on the mate wagon — I just knew that he and Ally would end up being mates and I was really looking forward to seeing how it would all play out. It was entertaining and sweet and gave me all the feels. I just loved this novella and I hope Shawna is next!

Finally, we have Kate Baxter’s “No Need Fur Love” and it was even more intriguing and exciting than the first novella of hers. This is only my second time reading Ms. Baxter, but she is always introducing me to new concepts and paranormal characters that I know about, but have always had more of a supporting role than a main one. “No Need Fur Love" just got better and better the more I read on and I enjoyed it so much — I really need to make it a priority to pick this author up again!

The Big Alpha in Town was so much fun to read! It made me laugh and sometimes made me shake my head or roll my eyes more in indulgence than in frustration. It tugged on my heart at times and warmed and melted it at others. I had the best time reading it and I’ll definitely be hoping and on the lookout for another anthology!

The three stories fit well in this anthology. The main problem is that none of them were incredibly good. I am unfamiliar with these authors and these universes, but it was still relatively easy to follow along. They were easy to read and fun, but not the best books ever.

The authors included in this collection of novellas have a talent for producing mouth-watering tales that keep their audience(s) glued to every page. The stories included in The Big Alpha in Town don't fail to disappoint as a collection. Overall rating for this collection is 3.5.

Bearing His Name by Eve Langlais
The ever caring Jade has a problem – she has a very pregnant sister living with her and baby sister doesn't have a clue which Zeus knocked her up. Besides, looking after baby sis becomes very difficult after the appearance of a very determined Greek bear at her door. Bear shifter Ark believes he is after the possible mother of his child but on the other side of the door is fate.

There is definite chemistry between the hero and the heroine but it isn’t as fiery as it could be. With a heroine who’s preoccupied with everyone’s well-being, it is hard for this couple to focus on the romance that a reader may be looking for. The male and female leads are the standard good looking couple with the hero being the territorial 6'5" overly possessive wealthy shifter. The heroine has her own set of issues besides the pregnant sister but due to the condensed story, full exploration of her issues wasn't possible. A noteworthy mention would be the second male lead (Stavros) who appears to be a bit edgier.

This novella is well constructed with a clear separation between the beginning middle and end (with some clumsy action sequences thrown in for good measure) but there are some issues with holding the reader's attention for an extended period. Due to the length of the story, there was a rush to close the story as neatly as possible. Though the story is shortened it remains a good read.

Owned by the Lion Millie Taiden
Ally is the curvy heroine of this Tale who is full of SASS and spunk. Keri the male lead who is has the full package and has used it all to his advantage. His character isn't the shallow but life and circumstances have influenced have behaviors. There is definite smoke between the leading characters but also the reader will be able to feel the connection between the characters.

This novella also hits another aspect that I love in these types of stories. It always spices a story up when jealous exes appear within the tale. Not just the average jealous ex but a crazy jealous EX. Now, there were some jealous female characters and some overly inquisitive ones that the leads had to dodge but they were not at the level of crazy needed to make this a true page-turner. Though the story is entertaining and the parade of women gives the reader hope that one will move fully to the dark-side, this just never happens. In the end, the story is neatly wrapped up and concluded without a cliffhanger.

No Need Fur Love by Kate Baxter
So, a Wood Nymph and a Wolf meet in a bar ... this is not the start of a dirty joke but the start of the best of the three novellas. I've never come across a paranormal romance with the heroine being a wood nymph but would have liked for this story be expanded. No Need Fur Love has a lot of great elements besides the attractive leads with insane chemistry. There is the Wood Nymph leader who would name an awesome villain in an expanded story and I hope that the author would write more using his character. I see a very wicked good time with Nymph Daddy if he happens to appear again. Overall, this was a fun read.

This anthology was just as fun much as I expected it to be! When I pick up an Eve Langlais, I know there is going to be lots of laughter. This story had it. I found all 3 books to be fast reads and thoroughly entertaining.

Bearing His Name - Eve Langlais: 2 stars. Meh. Didn't really care for the premise and it felt super rushed.

Owned by the Lion - Milly Taiden: 3 stars. I really like the Rent a Mate back story but this one seemed to just have the courtship as the storyline plot with a hey lets throw some action/conflict in at the end. Good, but not my preference.

No Need Fur Love - Kate Baxter: 4 stars. Not super happy with how it started and Mia's "quest" but loved the idea of wood nymphs and this did have a solid conflict storyline to go along with the bump & grind.

I did not love the first two stories, I found the characters rather unlikeable at best. However, Kate Baxter is the star for me, I'd read a series of full length novels about the world she has created

The Big Alpha in Town by Eve Langlais; Milly Taiden; Kate Baxter thank you Negalley and St Martins press for my advance copy of this book the thoughts below are my honest and unbiased opinions. I have recently called my best friend a paranormal romance snob because all she reads is vampire romance so when I picked this up I was simply looking for something different. This is a compilation of three shifter stories and I liked them all but I wasn’t in love. Bearing his name was fast paced and funny. How do you deal with finding your mate and dealing with the fact that you might be the baby daddy to her sister? What I loved about this story is that Ark and Jade are a funny couple and I found myself thinking my Big Fat Greek Wedding with shifters.

Owned by the Lion was super sweet. I have a week spot for strong males and Kier is amazingly strong willed and sweet all in one. I almost wish that this book was called Taming the lion. I say that in the kindest of ways I just feel that Kier is such a womanizer that everyone wants and outside from a sex scene I don’t really see much owning. It’s just two people with big personalities falling in love since we never see a shift. I do love the match aspect of finding a mate.

No Need Fur Love
This one is actually my favorite! I don’t know much about wood nymph and the Hero and his leading lady are such a feisty match that I loved it. They are such a great match that the story just turned off the page. There was drama and chemistry. I feel like the conflict that happens at the end brings Mia and Owen together because the conflict of life helps you find love. All and all an anthology worth reading if you are looking something cute to read by the beach.

I've had a taste of all three of these authors, so I was very happy to get this anthology where I'd get a story from each! One of the major characteristics I love from these authors is that they know how to weave in the funny moments and characters. Even in dangerous situations, there is always a wisecrack or action that will get a laugh from me. The book will have an overall rating, but I will rate each individual story as well.

Bearing His Name by Eve Langlais 3.5

I hear such great things about Eve Langlais's books, and I've been dying to read something that I really like. Bearing His Name seems to be one I've found that I've really gotten. I loved the characters. Especially the bears with their arrogant, over the top self-confidence. That was where most of the humor came from and I felt like I really "got" it. It was a short story, so things do happen fast. I've read a lot of books lately where shifters have been accepted very quickly by humans, so the way the girls just get over the fact that there are shifters in the world didn't bother me either. I really thought Jade's way of finding out the father of Ruby's baby was original and really funny. I can just imagine all those shifter faces! Bearing His Name was cute and funny. I enjoyed this story by Eve Langlais. I was a great, fast read and has me interested in reading more about her shifters.

Owned By The Lion by Milly Taiden 4

Ally and Keir's story was a lot of fun. Keir had a rep with women that he needed to overcome to convince Ally, who he discovers is his mate, to take him seriously. There was a lot of familiarity between the characters which made me think this must be part of a series. I will have to go back and catch up as I really enjoyed this story. There were a lot of people behind the scenes trying to help poor Keir out. I was surprised a little by Ally's lack of relationship with Keir since he knew her mother so well. I understand that she was away at school, but I would have thought they would have met up a lot sooner. I had fun with these characters and would like to get to know them more. I will definitely be looking up Milly Taiden's books to see which ones are connected to this story.

No Need Fur Love by Kate Baxter 3

I am a big fan of Kate Baxter's vampire books so I was interested to see what she had with shifters. Pairing a werewolf with a nymph was definitely interesting. I think the difference in Baxter's shifters kept me from truly getting involved in their world. The pain that they suffer when shifting outside of a full moon, and the shifting on the full moon no matter what seemed to be really old compared to the shifters I'm used to reading about. Almost like I was reading shifter books from ages ago where a lot of the myths behind them were true. I thought the way Mia came into the story with her agenda, and what ended up happening to her was funny. The nymph world wasn't heavily explained, but you got the gist of what you needed to know to understand Mia's motives. The action was really quick, as is normal for such a short story, and I was completely happy with the ending.

This anthology is hilarious. I sucked this one down. I wish I could give half star ratings. This is 3.5 with the amount of sweet humour. The first one made me laugh the entire time.

Bearing His Name
This one is shifter bears who have so many male cousins that it is hard to count them. They are Greek and the tie in to honey is nicely done. Ark is a bit concerned as he received a random card telling him he has a baby mommy. The big problem? At least another 11 cousins are in the same situation. Determined to figure out what is going on, Ark meets the challenge head on. He tracks down the pregnant woman only to find she isn't the one pregnant. Jade's sister is pregnant and she can't figure out who is her baby daddy.

This could make the story ridiculous and corny. Instead, it is cute. Between the chasing of a mate and figuring out "who's your daddy?", this novella will keep a reader amused.

Owned by the Lion

This novella is forgetting for me. I read through it quickly and then promptly forgot it.

No Need Fur Love

I loved this one. This I remember the best, not because it was the last story in the book. It is because it involves a wood nymph. Her determined focus on what she wants from a man creates unknowing collateral damage. This collateral damage is Owen, a werewolf who finally finds his mate. The lack of understand of each other's culture is sad, but what is sadder is how the wood nymph doesn't even try to learn about Owen. She doesn't care about him and what happens to him at first. Luckily for Owen, she gets with the program and starts to ask questions.

The conflict with her father is so odd. I felt this part of the story was rushed and concluded too down pat. The reader never learns why her father has issue with Owen. Nor do we really find out what happens to him. I feel like i need a follow up story. Overall, this story is the most refreshingly different.

This anthology is recommended to paranormal romance readers looking for different shifters and mate pairings.

Bearing His Name by Eve Langlais - 4.5

When Ark meets his mate things aren't going to be easy. Jade has sent letters to all of the guys that could be the father of her sister's baby. Now, one of the potential baby-daddies is at her house telling her she is his mate.

I always love Eve Langlais's books. There is always humor in the books that make them enjoyable reads.

Owned by the Lion by Kate Baxter - 4.5

Keir has met his mate except he used to be a player and some of his old women are making things uncomfortable for his mate, Ally. Ally is going to take a lot of convincing to believe that she is Keir's mate.

I liked the plot and the characters.

No Need Fur Love by Kate Baxter

Well, two out of three isn't bad. I just didn't like the wood nymph trope.

I received an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

This was a fun and lively anthology. Each story fit perfectly in my daily routine and kept me wanting more. BEARING HIS NAME by Eve Langlais was a fun and sometimes goofy, yet sexy romance. Who doesn’t love Greek bear shifters and their rowdy families? I just wish it were longer. OWNED BY THE LION by Milly Taiden was an enjoyable romance filled with sexual tension. Ally had her hands full with Keir’s past flames and his helpful matchmakers – but it was worth it. NO NEED FUR LOVE by Kate Baxter was a romantic romp through miscommunication and assumptions. Poor Owen had his work cut out for him with Mia. I especially liked that all three stories had the same feel to them. It didn’t go from something light and fun, to a story dark and harrowing. They blended well.

QuickShot Review 3 stars
It’s a mixed bag - I’d read the earlier antho by these authors, and it kind of continues in the same vein, since I liked one out of the three stories. I didn’t actually dislike the first two, which is an improvement from the first book, so….there’s that.

Yeah, anyway, here’s how it breaks down:

Bearing His Name - 2.5 Stars; problematic AF at first, since the complete lack of respect for what the heroine wanted, even if it was for the humorous effect, wasn’t my fave. With the heroine suddenly “realizing” why she’s resisted and making the hero’s stalkery behavior alright (not really), it was just an ok read for me. Eventually things balance out and it ends cute in it’s own way. Really it’s more about the comedy than the romance.

Owned by the Lion - 2 Stars; second book follows events of first book from first antho, cute but nothing new and not particularly memorable, which is probably worse. It didn’t irritate me, but I also didn’t think it was compelling and the reason for not telling the heroine that they’re fated mates a weak excuse for tension.

No Need Fur Love - 3.5 Stars; this story also follows events of first book from first antho; It was my favorite of the three, with a decent storyline, good chemistry and fun wood nymph twist on the shifter rom standard, though it wraps up too quickly.

Frankly the best of the lot both times has been the last story by Ms. Baxter. However, if you’re a fan of these particular authors, or if you love shifters roms of all kinds, you may enjoy the entire antho more than I did.

Awesome trio of shifter romance stories all in one compilation! Great authors that provided highly entertaining stories. Kate Baxter was a new author to me but still enjoyed her story. I know I can always rely on the other two authors to provide great reads and this was no exception. If shifter romances are your trope then don't hesitate!

I’m fairly certain I’ve been exposed to all 3 of these authors and their sets of books before. Either way, I think that someone who has no experience with them would still enjoy their unique writing styles and levels of quirkiness and smut in different ways. I really enjoyed each of them for different reasons.

The first story is about a group of relatives all receiving cards indicating they may have fathered a child. While one goes on the hunt to discover who the culprit is, he ends up finding his very own mate. Unfortunately, it is not the one who sent the card, but things get so much more complicated than that. The humor and adorably outgoing nature of these characters was completely addictive. I immediately loved the pushy, Greek bear and his pesky habit of breaking in.

The second story is about a playboy who suddenly discovers his mate. Unfortunately she has no tolerance for his playboy past and is firmly in denial about the whole mate thing. Keir, said playboy lion-shifter, is aided, thankfully, by his friends and family in his attempt to woo his reluctant mate. The sizzle between them also makes things a little more difficult to resist. These two ultimately end up with their HEA, and another happily mated couple is helped by technology!

The last story is a follow-up to the story that got us into the middle of nowhere, Idaho. Owen, the second to the newly mated alpha, is brooding at a bar about the odds of finding his own mate in this very small town when she waltzes right onto the stool next to him. Mia is a wood nymph, which is a thing that exists in this world, and he starts planning their life together right away. Of course, the attraction is off the charts so they have some things to do before the wedding and everything. Mia, however, has other plans and was only looking for a baby daddy so she could take the leadership title from her father. While she may have been motivated to do good, it sure comes across as crappy when she sneaks out on Owen. Don’t worry, though, this one has a happy ending for us, too.

This is the second three-in-one book from this trio I've read. Some of the stories continue with the characters from Thanks Fur Last Night, but you don't need to read that one first.First of Bearing His Name. This one is a standalone about Arkadios, a Greek bear shifter, who receives a mysterious note telling him he will become a daddy. However, not only he, but also his six other nephews have received the same news.
After some investigation, the trail leads back to Jade. She has posted the cards behind the back of her pregnant sister, to try to find the man who has impregnated Rebecca. However, on arrival, Ark realizes Jade is his mate. And he will do everything to convince Jade she belongs to him. She, however, is convinced he will be the father of her nephew. Ark is an hilarious character, with a very, very big ego and a lot of humour. I was often found chuckling over my Kindle, about all the remarks he made. It will take a lot of honey though, to convince Jade to believe Ark.

Second stop: Owned by the Lion. This story continues from Bearing His Sin with Xander's eldest brother Keir. Their father wants to retire and he wants Keir to take over the company. However, Keir currently works with his brother at another company, with their grandmother Jacqueline. His father encourages him to stop his womanizing ways and settle down with a woman. Keir however, doesn't want to settle, unless it is with Ally. His best friends little sister. But after all these woman, Ally isn't very enthusiastic to follow in their lead. So how can he convince her, that he is really a changed man?

The story was a bit shallow and not very convincing. Keir's secretary, Bess, however was the best character of the story. Always a step ahead of her boss and in the lead with all the issues. As Keir told Xander: "She is just a little scary". She made the story totally funny.

And last, but definitely not least: No Need Fur Love. This story continues from The Alpha and I, with Owen, Liam's second in command. Owen is miserable for being stuck in a very little town in Idaho. Convinced he will never find a mate, like Liam found Devon. However, his luck changes when Mia enters the bar. Bingo: from being miserable going to an all time high when he realizes Mia is his mate. And she agrees directly to go home with him. However, next morning, Mia is gone.

Mia just needed a sperm donor, to conceive an heir to the thrown. Her father had issued his demand in order for her to assume her birthright as the next ruler of their band. After returning to her home, she soon realizes, her father had no intentions whatsoever to hand over the throne to her.

So, stuck between the loyalty to her people and the tug of the bond between her and Owen, she has to make a choice: how to proceed from here? Find out for yourself in this wonderful last part of the book.

Overall, three out of five stars from me and a special thank you to Netgalley for providing the arc.

Bearing His Name (12/20)

Owned by the Lion (15/20)

No Need Fur Love (15/20)

Review:

So, the blurb pretty much hits the highlights for each of the novellas in this book.

Each story is wonderfully written by three of the best paranormal romance writers. Each is super sexy with lots of heart. The biggest thing I have to say is that I wish each were full length because I did not get enough of each of the couples.

If you are looking for a good shifter romance, then you should read this. You get some quick interesting reads and they might whet your appetite for more of these Authors. And if you like these, I recommend "Thanks Fur Last Night" another anthology and stories from these worlds by these three worlds.
