This is a great book, and its introduction, in particular, would be a great addition to a cultural studies course (I will likely assign it myself). While the case study approach does mean that not every public figure is discussed, this narrowing of focus also serves to reiterate the importance of the term Blasian not only as a destabilizing portmanteau, but simultaneously as a way of branding oneself: she focuses on celebrities who have used the term to speak about themselves, rather than ascribing it. The recuperation of the ‘trans’ prefix when talking about race is an interesting one, taking on the conversations surrounding Rachel Dolezal (compassionately, I should add, and this is not the only instance in which the elegance of the writing is not only a happy surprise to readers, but a significantly positive element) to posit ‘transracial’ as a term useful to antiracist scholars. Working more often on literature side of things, I’ll be thinking through her argument alongside Lionnet and Shih’s minor transnationalism.
