Wow! This book grabbed me on the first page and kept a hold pretty much throughout.

It's a really good story of a woman, Maggie, who awakens from a coma to learn that her daughter was killed in the car accident that caused her coma. In addition, she also finds out that her husband has disappeared. It’s a heart wrenching tale, interspersed with beautifully written letters to Maggie. There are elements of the story that dragged slightly, but, overall the tension builds throughout and It’s a well constructed, really well written psychological drama that I had to finish pretty much in a day.

Thanks so much to Netgalley and Penguin books for the ARC in exchange for this honest review. I’d struggled with a few recent books so was particularly pleased when I couldn’t stop reading this one.

A solid 4 stars. Recommended.

Maggie wakes up from a coma to be told that her daughter has been killed in an accident. During the time she has been unconscious, the funeral has been held, her husband has left without a trace, and her home is gone. The book follows Maggie as she tries to piece together what happened that night, and to deal with a nagging fear that her actions are in some way responsible for her daughter's death. As the narrative moves between past and present, it becomes clear that Maggie has many secrets in her past. - and that one of them might have caught up from her.

This was fast-paced and intriguing, with some interesting characters. I found myself more interested in the storyline from Maggie's teenage years, but all the threads wove together well.

Thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for the advance copy.

A gripping psychological thriller that kept me turning the pages.

After waking from a coma, Maggie learns that her daughter drowned in the accident that put her in the coma and her husband has disappeared. With no memory of what happened, Maggie tries to piece together the events leading up to the accident.

The book goes from the present to the past and is interspersed with letters from a child, the tone of which changes as time in the child's life moves on.

Plenty of twists and turns keep you guessing - wrongly - right to the end!

I had thoroughly enjoyed the previous book by this author so was delighted to have an ARC of this one - it certainly didn't disappoint! This was an incredibly fast paced rollercoaster of a thriller which I honestly couldn't put down!

Maggie wakes up from a coma to find that her daughter has died in the accident that caused her own injuries and her husband has sold their house and disappeared. She is discharged from hospital into temporary accommodation, and through clever use of past and present narrative, interspersed with letters from an unknown child, the truth of what happened is revealed. There are lots of blind alleys, lots of twists and turns before a fine ending. I spent the whole book wondering whether Maggie was a reliable narrator - I leave other readers to think about that one.

Thanks to Net Galley for the chance to review this book.

Maggie wakes up from a coma 10 weeks after an accident she has no memory of. Her daughter died, and her husband has run away, selling everything up and leaving without a trace. Maggie is now reliant upon the kindness of strangers to get back on her feet, a mammoth task considering that her reason for being is gone.

Slowly as she starts to recover she begins to recall additional details about the accident, and with the strange items appearing in her letterbox, along with the vivid images of her daughter that keep on popping into her head, she begins to wonder if Elspeth is indeed dead, and works hard to string the pieces of that terrible day together.

It felt like a rather short read, but perhaps that's mainly because the pace of the book was well planned and it flows quite well. I have issues about the extremes a character goes to in the book as it seems a little outside the realm of possibility and has been fleshed out perhaps too much like a Disney villain, but other than that it was a good thriller that I quite enjoyed.

WOW! What a great story.
This was not what I was expecting.
So many twists and turns and the ending is just heartbreaking.

Maggie awakes from a coma to be told her daughter has died and her husband has disappeared. She has no home, no belongings, no husband and now no child.
And this is just the beginning!!

This book was a real pleasure to read. I did not figure out the full story until the very end which was a great surprise.
Psychological thriller for sure but also explores the dynamics of family and love....

Really good! The story begins with Maggie entering a plea of manslaughter. Then it goes back to Maggie waking up from a coma that she has been in for sic weeks since the day of the accident. She is told that her daughter is dead and her husband has disappeared.

This novel is highly recommended!

Thank you for the advance copy of 'The Day of the Accident'.

This was a suspenseful read and one really feels sympathy for Maggie and the unanswered questions she has about her daughter's accident. I did not see the ending coming and felt a little deflated when it was revealed but would recommend this book. It is extremely readable and well plotted.

Wow! I had to read this book in one sitting as it had me gripped from the beginning page until the very last page. Very cleverly written with a twist I didn't see coming (and I'm usually very apt at guessing twists) which was very refreshing.
I was kept wondering all through the book wether it was an accident and who was writing the letters and what had really happened to elspeth.
More of this please!

A good plot which was fast paced and never predictable. The characters were not the usual but were flawed and interesting giving the story a nice depth. An enjoyable read.

Wow! This is a fabulous book! I only hope my review can do it justice. I was completely gripped from the first paragraph. Totally drawn in to Maggie's world and the unimaginable tragedy she's been through. The story is set out very cleverly, the first chapter makes you question every sentence of what follows. The writing is brilliant, and all the characters are well drawn and credible. I was completely absorbed, didn't want to put it down and so, when the dogs woke me at 3am, I used it as a reason to sit up and carry on reading. Utterly gripping and completely compelling. This isn't the first time Nuala Ellwood has blown my socks off, (in fact Ms Ellwood, you owe me £3.99 for the last pair that disappeared!), and I'm sure it won't be the last. A fantastic writer who possesses the ability to reach in and touch her reader's soul. Superb.

The Day of the Accident is a story filled with secrets and uncertainties and twists and turns, and a little bit of darkness.
Maggie is a character who will break your heart. From one traumatic event to another, her life is one huge tragedy, and even when she finally discovers light in her life, it gets so, so cruelly torn away.
This psychological thriller of a story had me gripped from the get-go. The writing was decent, and the characterisation very well-rounded – I found it easy to submerse myself in their lives. It’s definitely one of those stories that slowly feeds teensy tiny clues that the reader can string together until they’re given the bigger picture. Maggie’s resilience and determination, despite her continuous breakdowns as her world crashed around her, are worthy of respect. And whilst the ending was inevitable due to my figuring the underlying plot out along the way, and despite it being a tad melodramatic, I did feel satisfied when I closed the book. And it takes a lot to fully satisfy me as a reader, so bravo. ☺
