A Whale's World by Ian McAllister and Nicholas Read is an informational picturebook that is currently scheduled for release on August 28 2018. The story follows a pod of spy-hopping orcas as they explore the ecosystems of the Great Bear Sea while hunting for their next meal. Past rocky shores and through kelp forests, they observe foraging wolves, hungry grizzly bears, curious black bears, graceful fin whales, splashing porpoises, slippery seals and other members of the Pacific coastal food web.

A Whale's World is a visually and informationally interesting book about orcas and the world around them. Other animals that the orcas see in their travels; such as bears, wolves, types of fish, and more are included in the photographs and information. The photographs are well done and lovely to see. The text offers a selection of information about orcas, the world they live in, and the other living creatures that they see and interact with. I thought the book was well done, but not amazing. I think it will entertain and engage young readers, even those that do not take the time to read all of the text. It is a fun introduction to the ways that marine and land animals interact with the environment and with each other.

Beautiful pictures are the only real strong point to this book. The title and cover suggest the book will be about orca whales, but they are actually given the least attention out of any species in this book. Instead, this book is about the different species that live near the Great Bear Sea. The whale is personified slightly, with the narration talking about her getting frustrated about not being able to find anything to eat. In the end, the text takes the easy way out by not having the whales get a meal.

The Great Bear Sea encompasses the waters along the north coast of British Columbia, Canada, and includes Hecate Strait, Queen Charlotte Sound, and Dixon Entrance. Ian McAllister and Nicholas Read focus on the animals seen in this region of the Pacific in a children’s nonfiction book notable for its stunningly beautiful photographs. McAllister and Read help young readers see the dense temperate rainforest from a diving and spy-hopping orca’s perspective. The orca is on the lookout for seals or sea lions that her pod can share, but her periscoping thrust upwards also affords her a view of a grizzly on the shore who feeds on seafood: crabs, mussels, and barnacles. The orca’s world includes other shore and marine animals: wolves who dig in the sand for clams, massive fin whales, each the size of a bus, who consume krill and plankton, and hundreds of varieties of fish. The authors also mention many species of birds. At times, the text begins to read like a list, but then Read zooms in to provide a couple of interesting facts about a less-known creature, such as the gigantic Pacific octopus (which is known to be very intelligent and actually uses tools) and the twenty-four-legged sunflower sea star, large as an umbrella. The orca’s quest for food is not a success, so even though this is a world in which “one fish always eats another”, the author does not venture into “nature red in tooth and claw” territory. The orca passes by; the hiding harbour seal can, in the end, come out to enjoy the day.

This lovely book, part of the My Great Bear Rainforest series, is sure to please kids aged 7 to 10 who love to read about the natural world.

Thanks to Orca Book Publishers and Netgalley for providing me with a review copy.

A great picture book that shows how various species depend on each other in an ecosystem, the ecosystem in question being the Great Bear Sea in British Columbia.

A Whale's World is about a pod of orcas who are looking around the Great Bear Sea for something to hunt and eat.  It is a lot of photos and a lot of interesting information about the ecosystem and Orcas and other sea life as well.  Beautiful imagery.

I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review, I was not otherwise compensated.

“A Whale’s World” is an excellent nonfiction book, but the highlight is definitely the beautiful photographs!

A fun realistically educational book about Killer Whales in the wild, and how they hunt their prey. This photography style book is a unique look at the underwater world, and will be perfect for middle aged children that are interested in knowing more about this beautiful mammal.

A huge thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for sending me a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I truly appreciate it!

A Whale's World by Ian McAllister is a wonderful nature book with gorgeous photographs taken by the author. This is another book in the series "My Great Bear Rainforest". This book is about a pod of orca's swimming along looking for food. As they travel south, we are introduced to plants and animals they see along the way. We find out how this ecosystem supports various life. There are pictures of bears, seals, sea lions, shellfish, and of course orcas along with the beautiful landscape of the British Columbian Rain Forest. There are several books in this series and they could all be read together. You would see the same eco-system from the perspective of the various animals. This series is also great, interesting non-fiction for younger readers. Great learning book and a great visual delight. I would recommend this book for public, school and classroom libraries. The publishers provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.

With stunning photographs and simple text, this book introduces readers to the ecosystems of the Great Bear Sea as a pod of orcas look for seals or sea lions to eat. Readers get to see the whales' surroundings--the water, shores, and forests--as well as the animals who are nearby, including bears, other whales, and more. This provides just a quick overview of some of the animals and their behaviors and their environments, but it was enough to make me want to learn more about the Great Bear region. The photos are terrific!

I read a copy from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

I really like how the publisher is laying this book series out. Yes it is about whales, but it encompasses their entire world. Who do they see on the shore. What are some interesting bits about the grizzly and the black bear. They have amazing pictures, and often info bits not normally found in this level of a book. Periscoping was something I had seen, but never heard about until reading this kids book. These are really well done and great for any library collection.

Knowing A Whale's World is in the same series as The Seal Garden me immediately reach for this book - we all want to learn about orcas! The photographs on the pages following are a visual feast for the reader's eyes. Younger children will enjoy the photographs and older readers will enjoy learning new facts independently - the narrative is advanced from the orcas' perspective but we get to enjoy all aspects of their habitat. This also would be a book I'd like to to keep on the animals shelf in my classroom - it is recommended for students ages 5 to 8 and I agree but would add parents of preK 4s students might enjoy reading it as well. Thanks to #NetGalley for allowing me the opportunity to preview this #orcabook #AWhalesWorld by #IanMcAllister and #NicholasRead
