The author uses a variety of grains and rice in her cooking from wheat berries, barley and quinoa - to black rice, brown rice and sorghum.
The author starts out your day with a banana bread bowl using bananas, brown rice, butter, flaxseeds and sea salt. Theses ingredients are mixed together to make a delectable meal! You are then treated to an apple crisp bowl using grains, carmelized apples, milk, butter, honey and cinnamon. There is a luscious recipe for pumpkin pie rice pudding using brown rice, pumpkin puree, spices and coconut milk.

There are vegetable recipes, such as Balsamic Roasted Mushrooms and Brussels Sprouts with goat cheese and gremolata and a Thai Vegetable Curry that uses Thai curry paste, sweet potatoes, gingerroot and coconut paste to make a delectable bowl of spicy goodness!

There are recipes for Asian meatballs, chicken burrito bowls, Roasted whitefish and carmelized carrots in yogurt sauce, and Yogurt marinated lamb kabobs.

Enjoy eating healthy, varied and easy to serve bowls - the pictures make you want to eat off of the page!

This is a very inspiring book which gives recipes to create healthy and substantial lunches, which can be served in a bowl, which is the trendy way of eating now.
The chapters cover, fruit, eggs, vegetable, legumes, chicken turkey, pork, beef, lamb and seafood. There are lots of colour pictures of the finished dish which is important to me as i like to see the finished result to compare with my own results.
I was pleased to see adaptions and variations for vegetarians which as most of the recipes are based around grains is easy to do. Every grain used, is given it's own page, with cooking instructions and whether you need to soak the grains, or not, which again is handy if you have not cooked these before.
I cooked the Cucumber Tabbouleh with Chickpeas & feta, and the finished result was a lovely summer salad dish and filling enough as a main dish. It was easy to make with ingredients which are easily accessible and cheap to make for those on a budget.
All in all this book is great to have on the recipe shelf, and don't be put of if you are vegetarian or vegan too, as the recipes are easily converted.
I received a copy of this book for my honest opinion #Build-a-bowl #NetGalley

This book gives you the guidance to confidently try new ingredients and unlike a lot of cook books, it reads well. I love the extra attention given to the narrative, it made for a pleasurable read on it's own.

Bowl food is in my DNA!

I love reading cookbooks. First of all, I love cooking and secondly, I love discovering new ways to prepare delicious and nutritious meals. The past year or so, I often encountered meal-in-a-bowl types of recipes. I tried a few and love the concept. When I saw that Storey Publishing was offering an ARC of Build-a-Bowl: 77 Satisfying Nutritious Combos: Whole Grain + Vegetable + Protein + Sauce = Meal by Nicki Sizemore on NetGalley, I jumped on the opportunity to request it. The book is a fast read and it offers wonderful insights into the provenance and nutritional values of grains. Nicki also offers great tips on how to cook the numerous variety of grains listed in the book. The recipes are well detailed and easy to follow. She suggests great substitutions to change up the recipe or to make it vegetarian. There is something for everyone in this cookbook. I am planning to try a few recipes this weekend when I will have some time to prepare the grain portion. I am really looking forward to it!

Thank you NetGalley and Storey Publishing for this delicious ARC. Build-a-Bowl: 77 Satisfying Nutritious Combos: Whole Grain + Vegetable + Protein + Sauce = Meal by Nicki Sizemore will be available at your favourite bookstore on September 4th, 2018. This is a great book to have in your kitchen or to give as a gift.

Bowls are the new plate and while there may be a few bowl themed cookbooks there is none quite so flavorful or with attention to texture as Nikki Sizemore’s Build-a-Bowl which I might insert the word “better” into the title because this really is the bees knees of bowl themed recipes and absolutely deliciously inspiring.

A visually enticing book with a simple but wide variety of recipes on how to build a bowl. This book takes something seemingly very simply and single faceted and makes it exciting and shows many wonderous possibilities that be created and invented with this concept.

Wonderful cookbook, will definitely be added to my collection. The collection of recipes allows for healthy eating that are flavorful. I like the description of the different bases and how each section is broke up to make it easy to find what you want without having to look at each recipe. The recipe layers are described in sections so you can add some from a few to make one that is perfect for whatever your needs. The photographs were great making me want to try them all.

This is exactly the kind of book I was looking for. Informative and beautifully illustrated. The grains information was invaluable and the recipes are doable.

What a lovely cookbook. I appreciated how she went into explaining to her readers the different base's, so that we could mix and match and create a bunch of different recipes, by knowing what to do for the base of a bowl! While I haven't tried any of the recipe's yet, there were so many that I would LOVE to whip up and enjoy. There was great diversity among the recipes.

This book does provide you with a good formula for making a healthy bowl. It explains the different bases and how to store and cook them. You can get that info online for free though, so the star of the book is obviously the recipes.

There are sections for fruit bowls, legumes, veggies, eggs, and meats. There's nothing spectacular here, but it's bowls, so I both wanted and expected simple. A bit meat heavy for my liking, but you can always edit / substitute. It's got more than enough ideas to get you started on making bowls if you're stuck for inspiration.

Fabulous book!
I have been trying to think of dishes that are healthy but packed full of flavour and fun to put together.
This is perfect for people who want to try new foods, eat healthier with food that packs a punch.

This is a beautifully designed cookbook with really inventive ideas. The concept an entire meal in a single bowl isn't revolutionary but the flavours and combinations are. The use of various grain types mixed with delightful sounding sauces makes me extremely excited for when I can get a hard copy of this book in my hands.

A great book, that proves that healthy deosn’t mean boring! Colourful and bright. Exciting new ways to have salad. With 77 filling and nutritious meals, what more could you want for lunch or dinner, for one person or the whole family!

This is very informative, it has information on grains and other ingredients and info and pictures on all the grains used in the book. The recipes look very delicious and the pictures are wonderful.
The downside is the cooking and prep times. Without batch cooking the grains each recipe seems to take at least 30 minutes with some exceptions.

I loved this incredibly visual cookbook! The photos, fonts, and ways that the pages and recipes are displayed are so eye catching and make you WANT to try the recipes. I love that she gives exact measurements on each ingredient for the bowl, as well as tips on big batch prepping (on stove top AND rice cooker!), combining textures/colors, etc. I have been intrigued by the idea of "bowl" dinners for quite some time and really enjoyed reading this cookbook. I can't wait to try the recipes. The options within this book vary from breakfast to dinner, sweet to salty, and everywhere in between. There are sweet breakfast bowls, Mexican flavored bowls, Asian inspired ones, anything you can think of is in this book. Though I am not one to personally enjoy cooked grains for breakfast (oatmeal, etc.) there are tons of options in here for those of you who do enjoy those. From Italian to Moroccan, this book is packed full of flavorful and exciting bowl combinations. A few recipes that I specifically cannot wait to try: Huevos Rancheros, Green Beans and Grains, Grilled Pepper & Sweet Corn Salad, Greek Goodness Salad, Marinated Bean Salad, Buddha Bowls, Easiest-Ever White Bean Soup, Roasted Cauliflower and Squash with Black Beans and Avocado + Creamy Chipotle Sauce, Asian Meatballs with Sesame Broccoli + Sweet Spicy Glaze, Chipotle Marinated Hanger Steak, Lightened Up Chili Bowls, Roasted Shrimp with Snow Peas & Sweet Corn + Mint & Cilantro Sauce, Roasted Salmon and Asparagus, and so many more. I love the the recipes are very mix and match as well and that she gives ideas for alternate sauces, multiple ways to cook the eggs, etc. as you go. I think that this is an excellent resource for someone looking to try some exciting new recipes, and try out the concept of dinner bowls. I also loved her tip on serving the items in separate piles on a plate for picky kiddos. That way they can eat separately, or make their own bowls. I highly recommend this cookbook. I'll update once I have tried a few of the recipes!

First of all I am absolutely in love with this cookbook. Three weeks ago I hired a personal trainer and I train with her 3 days per week. I also am being very strict with what I am putting in my body. This is the perfect book for me and anyone who wants to eat healthy. The recipes are wonderful and easy for anyone to make. The book outlines how to create a healthy bowl with a grain, veggies, protein, sauce and a bit of crispy. I will be purchasing this book for my kitchen. My favorite recipe in the book was the Huevos Rancheros, hands down. Other likes were Vegetable & Quinoa Fry up with eggs, Greek Goodness Salad, Kale Cleanse Salad, Buddha Bowls and Chicken Burrito Bowls. Healthy, amazing, easy meals for anyone. Teaches you to use what you have.
