I picked this up because I'm a sucker for haunted house horror novels and got taken on the Gothic ghost story ride I was expecting. I did enjoy reading this on a gloomy afternoon, but it was over quickly.
Overall this was a pretty fun read, with few issues I had that took a star off the rating. The narrator, Anne Fleming, was both likable and unlikable by turns. Her seemingly insatiable need to please Bain, her love interest, was frustrating when she constantly bowed to his whims and plans, seemingly without any thought for what she wanted to do. For a while the plot seemed entirely Bain-driven, when I would have liked to see Anne exploring more of Wildfell and its history without the love interest involved. There were plenty of moments that could have been much spookier if they hadn't been derailed by Bain's arrival and Anne's subsequent mooning.
I was also strangely taken with Savannah and her life story. I wouldn't mind seeing that character again on her own, maybe in another haunted house that she can solve the mystery of.
