Cute story about another one of Chilly's inventions not working. Beautiful illustrations. Too bad kindle is black and white.

This book was a little confusing for me and I think the main problem stemmed from the fact that it seemed to download completely out of order. Never-the-less, after reading it several times and trying to understand the general plot and outline, my son and I still had a hard time figuring out what it was really about. Even imagining it in order, it still didn't really make sense, which was disappointing. My son loves penguins and he loves inventing things so I thought this would be a natural fit. Unfortunately, it just didn't work for us. I will say that the illustrations in this book are really beautiful. If they had been coupled with a stronger storyline I think the book would have knocked it out of the park.

Love it! Little inventors and future inventors should be inspired by this short book! Chilly is quite the penguin! There is just enough suspense from the orca nibbling their ice sheet for the littles to cheer Chilli on. Great story and the illustrations are fun to look at.

Chilly is a little penguin who builds machines that don't always work. Chilly is also depicted in the cutest way possible that a penguin could be. The other penguins feel that Chilly isn't being such a great penguin because he's very different and un-penguin-like

"My brain is full of seawater, and my sketchbook is full of goof-ups."

Chilly doubts himself like any penguin would, but he's trying his best to get a group of penguins stranded on an iceberg back home to their colony, Vinci. But there's a massive orca, called Plumpy Fin, swimming in their way and hungry for some penguin.

This is a cute little comic about carrying on with your grand and quirky ideas, despite what others say.

I'm constantly on the lookout for good children's books for my speech therapy sessions. I think Chilly is a sweet and inspiring little book, but isn't genre-defying like This Is a Taco! by Andrew Cangelose. Although the art-style is vibrant and attractive and I'd definitely love to read more from the author and artist.

This is a short and fun book for the little ones, with a great message behind the story - never give up, and even more importantly, you might fail, but that is just as important as the success because the process matters just as much, if not more, than the reward.

Vinci alongside some other penguins are drifting away from their home, on the glacier, because of Vinci's flying machine cracking the ice. Surrounded by Plumpy Fin, the orca, Vinci is trying to find away to get the other penguins and himself home.

It is a sweet book, but I did find the writing a bit too dry and I am not sure if it would capture children's attention if it wasn't for the penguins and the suspense of the story. So the story is good, fun, and full of great messages. The art is really nice too.

This is a great book - the artwork is wonderful and the story is one of adventure that many children are sure to enjoy, as well as the people reading the book to them. The penguin tries many different things, even when is not encouraged by his penguin family.

Loved this adorable story! I love the historically similar character teaching the never give up lesson.

Chilly da Vinci is not your normal everyday penguin. He is an inventor. The only problem is, like most inventors, not all his inventions work the way he hopes. When one of them sends him and his friends floating on a large chunk of ice in the sea with a hungry orca nearby, he frantically tries to find a way to get them safely home. Throughout the book there are sketches of his inventions done on the yellow paper with faded lead similar to what you find in books about Leonardo da Vinci. The book shows those young inventors out there that it is okay to have an unsuccessful invention, but it does not mean that you should give up trying. A cute little book. The penguins however, don't look a lot like any penguin I have seen.

This was a fun story about young penguin Chilly da Vinci who loves inventing machines. The only problem is... most don't work. When one of his inventions separates Chilly and his friends from their home, he must use quick thinking to get them safely off the drifting iceberg being gobbled up by an orca.
Humor and vivid illustrations (including some in the style of Renaissance man Leonardo da Vinci's inventions) will capture the attention of young readers and the important message of problem solving, persistence, and imagination make this an enjoyable read for adults as well.

This is a tough one. I absolutely love the concept. I love the artwork, but the storyline felt lacking to me. It seems kind of caught in between age levels. It's too sophisticated to be a simple picture book, but it's not quite up to the point of being a chapter book. I almost think it would have been better as a chapter book with more dialogue or something. it was just missing something for me. The constant prattling of the narration didn't quite cut it. It kind of reminded me of the old board book (which I love) "I Stink!" It had that same kind of explanation of everything narration, but it absolutely worked for that book -- not this one. Maybe some further editing would have been good.

While the art style was incredible, the story was lacking. I didn’t like that the story was written in a “constant stream-of-thought” sort of way. It made for a difficult read, especially with the random words and sentences strung along written in lighter brown.

I don’t know what the target age group here is. It doesn’t fit in with the chapter book genre, nor the picture book genre. Yes, it is a book with illustrations, but the writing caters to more of a 2nd or 3rd grade level maybe?

I like the premise of it, it’s a delightfully pretty book! Just the content itself was not for me

Review: CHILLY DA VINCI by Jarrett Rutland

I love to find children's books that not only provide a neat story, but also offers more: inspiration, encouragement, a moral lesson. CHILLY DA VINCI is a delightful tale of an inventor penguin. Chilly is creative and "thinks outside the box." Like Thomas Edison, his inventions aren't always perfect on the first attempt, but that never fazes him. He just keeps on.

Inspiring, encouraging, and delightful, CHILLY DA VINCI is a good read, both for reading children and reading to younger kids.

I think this would be great to introduce young children Leonardo da Vinci with Chilly the penguin following in his footsteps.

Poor Chilly isn’t like other penguins and would prefer to be inventing and eating kelp while others are eating fish and doing ‘penguin things’. Chilly isn’t the most skilled inventor and has a number of mishaps as he tries to save the penguins from being caught by Mr Plumpy Fin, a whale. The question is will he be able to succeed with an invention before any of his friends get eaten?

I think this book would be great to teach children about Leonardo Da Vinci and give some great ideas for making models with moving parts in DT. I would also consider using it for PSCHE lessons to teach children that making mistakes can help them with later successes and that it is OK to make mistakes.

I am always on the lookout for books on inventions, engineering or problem solving for my children or for the library. I love this book!

I think this book will be very successful due to the topic being STEM related and by using penguins to tell the story. Children love penguins and the illustrations are gorgeous. I love that even though Chilly fails he doesn't give up, this is something that children need to learn.

This is a silly book about a penguin that invents things, like Leonardo De Vinci. In fact, his inventions all appear on the yellowing typ eof paper that we always see De Vinci's drawings.

His inventions don't work, however, and one separates he and his friends, from the mainland, as well as from family. He must invent something to get them home, before they are all eaten by an orca.

Told with light humor, and more and more complicated inventions.

Cute sort of story about never giving up, and trying to come up with solutions.

A very imaginative book! A cute story about a genius penguin that causes havoc with his inventions.

This is a cute book! It is a great way to introduce Leonard da Vinci to children. It would also be great for a penguin storytime. The illustrations are done very well and add so much to the story. Children will definitely enjoy reading about Chilly and seeing his inventions.

Chilly Da Vinci is a cute little penguin who never gives up and had to ignore his friend’s jeers about his inventions. One of his inventions separates Chilly and a few others from their home iceberg so it’s up to Chilly’s ingenuity to get them back home. Plumpy Fin the Orca is meanwhile chomping in their ever decreasing iceberg...
Lovely illustrations and message in this book. Many of the illustrations are made to be weathered like daVinci’s drawings and journals.

This book doesn’t work in ebook form. It was hard to follow the story. But it seemed like it is probably a cute book.

While other penguins do they usual "penguin stuff", Chilly invents - and builds- machines. A brilliant inventor at heart, he has yet to build a machine that actually works. But that doesn't keep him from trying! After all, great inventors don't give up!

What a wonderful book to read with your child! Chilly is a great role model for children of all ages. He is determined, inquisitive, and never gives up! Chilly teaches us that when we want something badly, we should try and try again, and never be disheartened by the failures that happen along the way. The story of Chilly makes anyone reading it want to try harder for their goals , and that makes reading his story even more worthwhile!
