A very interesting look at how artists are inspired by particular books, and also how some artists also create books which are works of art.

Any self-respecting bibliophile has to appreciate the book itself as a vessel, as an art form. That doesn't mean I knew much about the subject which is where this book came in handy. This will make a nice addition to my books-about-books bookshelf.

I adore all the artist's creativity. I love making books out of different materials. This book was visually inspiring. There is a bit of everything in here, that would definitely inspire any book lover.

This is a book I could sit and look at for hours. It gathers photos of books created by artists, to be art, not to be novels. Some of the art is not my taste, but it is an interesting way of looking at the written word. It may sound odd, but my two favorite books pictured are the coke can book, and the one made of dots on clear paper. I really wish I could see that one in person.

"I don't read but I make books"

Book full of examples of artists using books to display their art. Many of these artists I have never heard of, so I found it quite interesting and well researched.

Just amazing! I love books, both to read and as artistic expression. I collect both and everything in between book related. So inspirational. I think anyone interested in books should take a look at this book. I can't wait to see this book in color. Anyone interested in journaling who want to take it to the next level should get this book as well. Great book Marcia Reed and Glenn Philllips!

This is a nice coffee table book but not lots of information or explanation. I would have liked a bit more.

In fairness, I should have read the description of the book more carefully. I was not expecting to just see book binders’ work. I was hoping for inspiration and directions on how to make my own.

I found several of the pieces pretty boiler plate and unimaginative,

Disclosure: Netgallery provided me a digital copy of the work in exchange for a fair and honest review.

So cool! I think this would be a great coffee table book/gift for artists/book lovers. At first I wasn't sure what to expect, but it really is just that - artists and their books. Tauba Auerbach's book made out of silk-screened micron Lexan was incredibly interesting. Books out of flattened Coca-Cola cans, plastic, Japanese silk, and more -- these books made me realize there's so much more to a book than a 'straightforward' book. Truly inspiring for someone who loves book, is crafty, and looking to explore.

This mostly a coffee table book with plenty of photos of artist books but not a lot of description or explanation on how they created them.

(disclosure: netgalley gave me a copy of this to review. All opinions, though, are my own.)

I've always been enamored of book form as art form. There's something special about bound (or otherwise collected) works. To me, it just feels like it changes and deepens the whole collection of ideas and concepts into something better than the pieces of the whole.

Throughout history, artists have loved the book form as a vehicle for artistic expression. The author of "Artists and Their Books/Books and Their Artists", has curated an incredible collection that spans multiple eras and disciplines, putting together not just this book, but a physical exhibition that's now on my wish list to go see. From an American Megazine (a giant magazine over five feet high) to books collected in boxes to things that one might not even consider a book unless prompted -- there's a TON of inspiration here.

Book artists will love it for the wide range of inspiration. Book lovers will love it for the beauty and meaning of the collected pieces. Art history nuts will love it for the exploration of the book form as art throughout history.

It's not a how-to, by the way. If you're looking for directions on how to recreate one of Duchamp's Boites, for instance, you won't find it here. (There are, however, other books out there that might fit that bill.) This is pure exhibition survey and inspiration.

I know I came away with a long list of things I'd like to try someday, springing off some of the art in these pages, and I'll probably end up picking up a copy when it's released, to be used as motivation fodder and reference. :)

Many artists have expressed their creativity by creating or recording in a book.

The author presents artists from various fields, including their intentions, how they worth through their creative processes, and the development of ideas to art in their book or books.

Love books? You'll enjoy this walk into the creative life of those who love and work as artists.

Highlighting some of the most bizarre and beautiful volumes in the Getty collection, which push the boundaries of what a "book" is. Will appeal to artists, art lovers, and appreciators of avante garde work.
