I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. Actual rate: 4.5 Valiant High is very much like Sky High (Disney original movie), with superheroes and classes. Except in Valian High, you are not allowed to use your powers -like in Halloweentown (the university they go to). There are a lot of characters, and not much time or pages are given for me to better understand or know each of them deeper. The plot progresses quickly as it comes nearer to its' end. There are a few cliches in the story, like the nerd with the jock, a nerd transforming to a hottie, and a student that never seems to graduate. Which is very relatable yet with a very super-ish twist. Valiant High is sort of a combined/collaboration story of its' characters -since most of them already have their own comic. Overall, the story is very interesting and good for a read on its' own. You don't need to read the other comics to understand this one, as it explains along the way. |
If you like comic books about teenage superheroes, and like stories set in high schools, then this collection will tick all your boxes. This is a light, sometimes funny, story of a group of super heroes, from the Valiant universe, which I had never heard of before this, as they were in high school. For those who do read those comic books, they will have fun seeing how their heroes were as young men and women. For those who have never read those comic books, this is still very accessable if you are familiar with high school stories. I almost said if you had ever gone to high school, but high schools are never like they are in the comic books. The characters are likable. All students are prevented from using their powers. This is ok, until they need to use them. Perfect that like the silly side of high school stroies, a sort of Archie comics for super heroes. #ValiantHigh #NetGalley Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review. |
I hadn't realized this was an actual ongoing universe, first of all; shows you how much I know about comics. I liked this! It's cute, the art style works for me, and it teaches a great lesson. It's definitely read to me like it was for middle grade & taught some nice lessons. I really enjoyed the representation offered by the cast of characters & would consider reading more. I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. |

I picked this up because I've really enjoyed Faith from Valiant comics. It was fun and appropriately full of high-school-drama. Since Faith is the only character I was familiar with, I'm not sure if I got as much out of it as someone who knew the full line-up of supers who were involved. That said, I don't think you need to know them to enjoy the story. The cast of characters was diverse, but they felt a bit like caricatures. That's both a product of the format and the genre, though: there's only so much character development and depth you can fit into a short graphic novel, and high school settings usually involve a lot of stereotyping, at least at first. A lot of the setting and plot elements were unbelievable, too--not in a "people don't have superpowers" but in a "if people had superpowers, this wouldn't make a lot of sense" kind of way--but, again: genre. Bottom line: fairly unbelievable, but fun, zany, and accessible superhero high escapism. |
This is a story I actually enjoy. The characters are cool, the story is nice and easygoing. You can connect with the characters and know their story by the things you read. The art is amazing and so beautiful. I recommend this 100% |
Really enjoyed this! The art style was great, and the story line kept me intrigued throughout my read. Would definitely pick up more volumes of this!! |
Valiant High isn't exactly to my taste, but it's definitely worth reading. I enjoyed it for the most part. |
Valiant High is part of comiXology’s new Originals line. If you’ve read anything of Valiant’s superheroes, then you’re probably going to recognize a lot of the characters that show up here. There’s Aric “X-O Manowar” Dacia, Colin “Ninjak” King, Faith “Zephyr” Herbert, and Amanda “Livewire” McKee. They’re in an alternate universe that isn’t, where they’ve been thrown into a new setting, reimagining these heroes as if they were in a superhero high school. I’ll be honest with you here. I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this series. Re-imagined stories like this can go one of two ways; they can either be absolutely fantastic or pretty terrible. I was hoping this would be the former, but without diving right in there really was no way to be sure. In truth, I was pleasantly surprised. Valiant High lived up to my hopes and actually exceeded them by leaps and bounds. It was funny, quirky, and unique. The characters were believable in their situation, and while they were changed, it seemed to only be done so that they’d fit in with their new environments. I’ve always liked the concept of a high school meant for superhumans. I can probably thank X-Men or even Harry Potter for that one. It just seems like a light and fun concept though, you know? And that’s certainly the case for Valiant High. While they do face dangers, and have their own fights and internal squabbles, it was overall a fun and easy read. What’s really great about this series is that it’s perfect for both the longtime fans and new ones as well. Personally I’ve only read Faith’s series, but I had no trouble understand any of the other characters or their new histories. And obviously I was thrilled to see Faith and how they had made her character fit into this world. I imagine most fans would feel the same way. I’m really happy with how this series turned out on the whole, so I hope that they continue with it. It’d be fun to see where they got with it, and what sorts of long term plots they start establishing. |
I really enjoyed this comic. I thought that it was fun and it reminded me a bit of Sky High. I loved that we got to see Faith who has her own comic series and I loved that we got to meet some cool characters. This comic is definitely one that everyone should read. |
I wanted this to be like the Faith comics but this was a bit too busy for me. The art is great and the story was ok, but it wasn't as good as I wanted it to be. |
3,5 stars for this one. I love the classic high school backstory combined with superhero-ing! The artwork is great, and the story comes together in the end. A cute little graphic novel that I'll recommend to anyone. |
This was a lightweight and fluffy story of some of Valiant's superheroes as they were in high-school, but it's not Superboy - far from it. It was fun and light, and active, and well-drawn and scripted, so I had a good time with it. It was really nice to see Faith in her element and to see her respected and treated as a human being, not as a weight problem, which I've never seen her as anyway. The other characters I confess I was not familiar with - or if I ever was, I've forgotten them. The nice thing about this is that it's a PG-13 kind of a story so anyone can read it. There's some high-school jinks, some kissing, some action, and cartoonish violence, the occasional oddball fantasy creature, but there's nothing I wouldn't let my kids see. Not that they're very much into comic books! The main protagonists are Amanda "Livewire" McKee and her best friend, Faith "Zephyr" Herbert, and Faith never looked more present than she does here bringing hope and charity wherever she goes. Amanda is pretty cool too, but I'm a Faith fanboy what can I say?! I recommend this if you're into the Valiant hero world at all. |

Valiant High is a graphic novel (aka comic book) that is about the Valiant characters as teenagers in high school. It’s a great way to get introduced to them if you don’t know them. It is fun to read and full of action. I got to enjoy their teenage anxiety (as I remember my own when I was a teenager) in the story. It’s a great story to read! |
I really enjoyed Valiant High. Very entertaining graphic novel of superheroes in high school. Fitting in, feeling weird and making/keeping friends! |

Even though I read some graphic novels, I didn’t realize this was about established characters when they were in high school until after I’d read it. Lol. It was a fun read, kind of like superheroes through a Riverdale lens. I will recommend to customers for a lighthearted read and also check out some of the original comics. |

I love Valiant High. High school, worries about tests, having misunderstandings with friends, learning to drive, fighting super villains just another day at Valiant High. |
Good story. Very in touch with how kids feel today and the struggle of high school. Join the whole team of super heroes as they attend high school and prepare for the upcoming homecoming dance, while battleing an antient evil. |
This was my first venture into the Valiant universe and I loved it so much I now want to read all the graphic novels. This was a fun, quick read that gave me an introduction to some of the main characters before they became super heroes. I loved the tone of this graphic novel. It was a lot of fun to read and the plot was an excellent mix of origin and mystery. The illustrations were gorgeous and the writing witty and fast-paced. Highly recommended. |
This was such a quick and amazing read for me! The illustrations were really amazing, and exactly how I would like them. The characters were fascinating and so complex, which I found completely awesome, albeit surprising, considering that this was a 4-volume story. It's only flaw? Why was it just a 4-volume story?? I would have gladly immersed myself into a full-fledged comic series, centered around Valiant High and its amazing students. All in all, 4 stars for a quick but really action-packed and intriguing comic I really enjoyed! |
I loved this graphic novel. It is well written and beautifully illustrated. It tells the story of a school where special kids go to develop their superpowers. They have these powers but need to learn how to use them for the best results. When a dark entity threatens the school, how can they defeat it? Altogether, of course. First crushes, learning who they are is what high school is so about. I was happy to see how the authors put kids of all shapes, sizes, colors and sexual orientation all together. I was honored to be able to read this great book. I received this book from Net Galley for an honest review and no compensation otherwise. |
