This book was ok but not really my style. The whole thing with the Mexican cartel... just not into all that.

I normally like Janet Dailey; she was one of my first authors since the Mills & Boone days, and her romances were captivating, Having said that, somehow "Texas Free" did not have that charm and chemistry for me. It can be read once, but nothing really worthwhile would stick with you, if you think of the book later on.

Romance books are not my typical reading choice, but Janet Dailey does not write typical romances. Western drama with a touch of romance and intrigue are the perfect combination for a Sunday evening read. The characters and background are so good that you could actually be in Texas with them.

Rose Landro had seen some hard things in her short life. She lived in foster homes where she was abused. Then, she witnessed her grandfather's murder and then had to kill his murder to protect herself. To protect her, Bull Tyler whisked her off to Mexico to live with a family there. The cartel came in and killed them in cold blood and then came after her. She had been raped and mistreated and she was done with taking it so she killed the brother of the cartel leader when he came for her. Then, she ran for Rimrock Ranch in Texas, hoping to finally put all the bad things in her life behind her and claim the land her grandfather had left to her. Things weren't as she had hoped they would be at the Rimrock Ranch but she was determined to get her land back and make a life for herself, alone.

Tanner McCade was a ranger who was undercover at the Prescott Ranch to find some cattle rustlers. He had some dark secrets from his past that he had also been running from. The first time he saw Rose, he saw a beautiful woman who had obviously been hurt. He felt protective toward her and wanted to help her. As he spent time around her, he began to see her strength and desire to be independent. He supported her but also felt the need to provide protection of her from the evil of the world. Would he ever be able to fall in love again or would this attraction be a fleeting thing? Would Tanner and Rose be able to put the past behind them and move forward into a bright future or would the past come back to haunt them and destroy them?

This was a well written, wild ride. I was given an arc copy of this book to read and I offer my honest review.

As usual Ms. Dailey did not disappoint with this next installment in her Tyler series. Rose the main character is a feisty, yet lovable young lady who had overcome so many obstacles in her life, yet she just wants some stability. She had to overcome her loss of land, betrayal by boys she felt were like brothers, a scary childhood and manipulating neighbours. It makes for a great story to read how she does overcome these hardships to turn into an upstanding young woman who fights for what she believes in. This book caught me at the start and held me until the end. Always a delight to read about the Tylers of Texas!!!

Some times I feel like I get stuck in a reading rut and every other book is the same recycled plot, cliched scenarios and similar characters with different names. It's nice to pick up book and get a break from all that. Reading Texas Free was a nice break from that endless loop.

The story is a bit more cut and dry then I'm used too. This doesn't have any flowery romance and is low on heartwarming one liners between the MCs but I felt their connection and I wanted both Tanner and Rose to have their happily ever after in the end. In the long run, I guess this did delivery what it promised, two people finding love.

I'm not sure this would be a hit for everyone but I liked the change of pace (aside from the long winded descriptive scenery) this was a good read. Rose did really have the worst of luck and the treatment she received by the horrible men she encounters throughout the book was both dispicable and disheartening. I get it was different times (the story takes place in 1985) but it made me wonder if anything has really changed since then.

Would I recommend?
I liked the old time feel to it but I'm not sure this is something I would re-read again. The "I love you" scene was so lackluster that I felt a be deflated after reading this all the way through with that being the reward. I also wasn't really feeling the loose ends that were Ferg and his slimy rodent of a son, Gern. I wish the epilogue would have mentioned what happened to them.

Rose had it hard. From a young age, she had to learn that the only person she could truly depend on was herself. After killing a man when she was just a teen, she was whisked to a place she had never been before with people she'd never met. They became her new family and she owed her life to Bull Tyler. Fast forward more than a decade and the couple who took her in have been murdered by the cartel that has taken over their town and they're out to get her too. After taking another man's life, she finds herself on the run and the only place she can think of to go, to be safe, is the only other home she's known... with Bull. She's determined to work the land that was left to her by her grandfather, but Bull has taken that land as his own. While trying to get her land back, she's also back to face the son of the man she killed, the mystery of missing cattle, and a stranger that works for the enemy that stirs something in her she's never felt before.

While there was much to enjoy with this story, it did drag in bits. Tanner was easy to like, but in the end I still didn't know him. Bits and pieces of his life were revealed, but it wasn't enough. However, his character was an honorable man, full of integrity, compassion and understanding and I loved how he was able to see to the heart of Rose. Now her character was the hardest to get attached to. She really was prickly. But I admired the heck out of this young woman. The author created a heroine that wasn't a stranger to hardship, who had survived against the odds, who had endured the unmentionable, and who literally demanded your respect. Texas Free had doses of suspense and a bit of mystery, but at its core it was about hard work, family, finding hope, and falling in love.

Like all the Texas books by Janet Dailey, Texas Free is a Western story with sweet, steamy romance at its core. Rose is running from a past she wants forgotten and Tanner is a law man willing to help her.
As always, there is something about the West and the way Janet Dailey writes that puts you in the thick of things. A perfect story with a rough and rugged ending.

Texas Free weaves a take about Rose, Tanner, Bull, Ferg, and a Mexican cartel that keeps you guessing until the end. When Rose moves back to her hometown, with plans to reclaim her land, because she is running for her life, things don't go according to plan. She has gone through a lot in her life and doesn't knew whom she can trust. When she realizes that Bull lied in order to claim her land as his, she asks him to give it back. He tells he no and she decides to talk to Ferg. But can she trust him?
Tanner is under cover trying to figure out who is stealing cattle. When he sees Rose, he is drawn to her, but doesn't know if she is part of the group stealing or not. As his case starts coming together, he grows closer to Rose. He wants to protect her, but doesn't want to hurt her. When things get sketchy for Tanner, will he survive? Will he be able to live again after what happened in his past?
What happens when Bull's children get taken? Will Rose be able to keep her land? How will the drug cartel she is running from affect her and the rest of the people she cares about? A great addition to this series.

More suspenseful than romantic this one had me flipping pages quickly. The characters are edgy, rough and faithful to their values. Rose and Tanner had a tough start with a slow burning romance. Her troubles with the land, not knowing who to trust and wondering when her past will catch up made the story intriguing. Rose isn't an easily likable character, she's stubborn and intelligent yet common sense alludes her at times. I enjoyed Tanner's gentleman side and the other characters added some cowboy flare. Always a pleasure to get a Dailey book, something unique every time. My copy came through Netgalley and my review written voluntarily.

Texas Free is an intriguing romantic suspense novel by Janet Dailey. Well-written cowboy story with a balance between action, suspense, romance and drama. There is a mystery surrounding Rose Landro that Special Ranger Tanner McCade is determined to solve. Once he does that same determination is needed to help her survive those who are out to get her.

Theses are characters who while they may not have had an easy life still live with dignity and integrity, I like that kind of person. The story-line flows making it a compelling and engrossing read. Secrets and doubts are part of the drama leading up to the attraction between Rose and Tanner. An entertaining read not just for fans of Janet Dailey but for suspense romance fan everywhere.

Rose grew up tough. This affects her outlook on life. Bull was suppose to look out for her—but he had his own agenda. Throw in cattle rustling and a Ranger named Tanner and you have the beginnings of a good story. Unfortunately for me, I just couldn’t get into it. I’m not sure if that’s because I’ve read the other Tyler books that take place when the kids in this book are grown (these books came out first). I remember Bull from those books and he was NOT a very nice person then, so that may have colored my views.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley for a honest opinion.

This story and these characters grabbed my attention right from the beginning and kept me spellbound all the way through. It's a nice blend of mystery, suspense, action, and romance. It has a lot going on as Rose Landro returns to Rimrock Ranch to claim what is rightfully hers. She may be hiding out from a Mexican cartel but returning to the ranch is even scarier. Tanner McCade is working undercover investigating a rash of cattle thefts when he meets Rose. He knows she's hiding something but has no idea what. You need to read this one and experience the story for yourself. It's well written and will keep you guessing what's next. I highly recommend it.

This book grabbed my attention in the first few paragraphs but unfortunately it lost it somewhere along the way. This book definitely has action, suspense, romance, and violence. It’s a quick read with some interesting and disgusting characters in it. Normally I like Janet Dailey but this isn’t one of my favorites. I felt like she started on some subplots with other characters like Ferg, his son, and Bonnie but didn’t follow through. I felt the story line was a bit far fetched. I also didn’t care for so much emphasis being placed on the birth mark Rose had. So she had a port wine stain and some people didn’t deal with it....moving on. I could go on and on but suffice it to say this book wasn’t the best Janet Dailey story I have ever read but I will continue to read other books by this author.

Texas Free by Janet Dailey was an excellent book that I highly recommend! Her writing style works so well and her storyline and character development are spot on.

This was a sweet love story with a slow burn. Both Rose and Tanner have had tragedy in their lives, but they keep moving forward, determined to make their way in life. Even when their paths intersect, their attraction is mutual, but their past holds them back. They don't have an easy road, and Rose is in danger almost constantly, but they try and find a way. Once everything is settled, there are still questions that could keep them apart, but luckily, they are both well and committed to each other

I loved the mystery in this book, the action, the backstories, and the love story that brings Rose and Tanner together!

I adore Janet Dailey books. So glad they kept coming after she passed. Was so glad to get another Tyler of Texas book. I was sad that I heroine of the last book was killed off. I hate when authors do that, especially in a romance.
