This book is very informative and would be appropriate for elementary school students. It begins with a discussion of what fossils are and how they are formed. From there it moves on to a discussion of how state fossils get designated and shows a map of which states do and do not have state fossils. From there, it discusses how to know the age of fossils and gives a list of geological eras. Then we get to the heart of the matter, which is a discussion of the official state fossils.

The back of the book contains a glossary of terms, as well as places in each state to see fossils (there are four in my state, which I will be looking into as field trips for my grandchildren). There are also books and websites listed for further reading.

I highly recommend this for teachers, school libraries, and parents of children who want to learn about dinosaurs and/or fossils.
