The Consuming Fire (excerpt) by John Scalzi

This was an exerpt of the first six chapters provided to me by Netgalley.com. I am a long time fan of John Scalzi; I read his entire 'Old Man's War" series, two of the 'Lock In' books and the first book in this series, 'The Collapsing Empire.' This new book, 'The Consuming Fire' is a worthy addition to the series. I only read the six-chapter excerpt, but this book picks up where 'The Collapsing Empire' left off.

The story starts off with the Emperox, Grayland II declaring that she has had mystical visions of the demise of the FLow, the flowing energy stream which connects the worlds of the Empire. This is apparently a ploy, since she has this information from her scientist friend Marci, a ploy so she can prepare her people for the coming changes. In the first six chapters of the book, we are taken through the political action of the Emperox, a speech by Marci, in which he finds out that some new streams may be forming, and the political machinations of the family Nohamapetan, who in the first book were the main opposition to the Emporox.

From what I read, this book has the pulse driving excitement and political intrigue that made the first book so enjoyable. The Empire is beginning to collapse and this make the story exciting. Recommended 4/5 stars. D. Lowrey at bookgeist.blogspot.com.

I usually avoid excerpts as I don't like to be drawn into a story that I know I won't be able to finish. But I have recently discovered some of John Scalzi's other works and wanted to see what this new book was about. I enjoyed what I read and look forward to getting the full book in October. Gives me enough time to read the first book before this one comes out.

I was disappointed when I realized this was just an excerpt, as it drew me in. I really enjoyed the first book from the series and know I will enjoy this one too. Can't wait to read the whole thing!

Enjoyable book. This story takes place in the future, out in the stars. People travel through the Flow, between the worlds. The worlds are controlled by a feudal system and The Church of Independency. The politics reminded me of Dune series. I am looking forward the more from John Scalzi on this book and the series that should follow.

Nice to get caught up on the world Scalzi created. Nice tease reading the first few chapters. I listed to first book and plan to do the same when this one comes out.

John Scalzi did it again! Definitely one of very best SF authors in circulation, always keeping consistent magic in all his works, no matter the sub-genre he is tackling.
This excerpt looks even better than the first volume of the series, I am looking forward to read the whole work.

Scalzi is, in my humble, opinion, the Stephen King of science fiction writers, prolific, extremely talented, literate yet accessible. The consuming fire continues the interdependency series and is just great hard sci fi with mind blowing ideas.
