3/5 stars. Wasn't that fun.

Crafty kids love to show off what they make, and what better way to do that than to wear their own one-of-a-kind handmade clothes! The authors of the best-selling and much-acclaimed Sewing School® series are back with a complete course in sewing clothes, specially designed for kids aged 8 to 12.

Starting with the basics, Sewing School® Fashion Design teaches kids how to make three essential garments: a top, a pair of shorts, and a skirt, and then encourages them to build their skills and customize each piece with options for changing the neckline or sleeve length and adding their own decorative touches. With step-by-step photos and actual kid-created examples, the approach is friendly and forgiving — no fussy fitting or difficult techniques. All the necessary pattern pieces are included for a wide range of sizes and body types, along with guidance on selecting fabric, cutting accurately, and adjusting the fit. With a wardrobe of their own making, kids will feel great about what they wear!

I was thrilled to be able to read an ARC of "sewing School: Fashion Design". It is the perfect tutorial for anyone age 5-105 whose interested in designing and/or making their own clothing. It is full of great tips, techniques, and fun ideas, not just for beginners, but even for those with some experience under their belt. llots of step by step instruction for constructing woven garments, but many of the techniques could also be used on knit fabric designs as well. Highly recommended for anyone interested in learning a bit more about do it yourself fashion.

This is a well written and detailed book for young people interested in fashion design, sewing, and just getting together with friends to do something creative. I like that there are three main pattern ideas in the book, but that the reader is then given ways to alter these patterns into something else and help them think past the pattern to create something that is their unique style. Easy to understand language. I will definitely purchase this for my upper elementary students.

This is a great book that will get kids interested in sewing their own clothes using a sewing machine. It covers all the basics, what equipment to have, how to use a pattern, measurements and much more.

Each step of the projects come with colour photography and ideas on how to make the item, be it a skirt, top or shorts shorter or longer, plus there are about 6 different sizes in the patterns to choose from. Some of the clothing items once made up might be a little dated for the youth of today, however there is still plenty to choose from.

This book is aimed at those using imperial measurements rather than metric. Would be nice to include both sets of measurements.

I received this book from netgalley in return for a honest review

This is such a nice book for any youngster who thinks they want to be a fashion designer. It goes over almost all things you need to know, and it includes patterns. Personally I don’t like all the patterns, but that is because I have been sewing for years. They are perfect pattern for those just starting out. I started out using similar patterns when I was a child, so I know the style works. I really like that the authors included pictures of boys sewing as well as girls. The only place I think is lacking is on sewing machine knowledge. It gives the basics, such as which side to sew on, but not what stitch to use, or thread tension, etc, which can play into how well your sewing project goes. Overall, I think it’s a fantastic resource for kids and beginners.

Amie and Andria made an incredible work with this book. An introductory sewing class for children ideal for parents or teachers looking for after-school activities. The book contains tutorials and workshops that can be taught to children from 8 to 11 years old.

I brought my Granddaughter a children's sewing machine because she wanted to learn to sew like Grandma and Mommy. Unfortunately it has sat in the box since Christmas. When I saw this book I thought it may help us both kickstart the project. After reading through it I even learned some new things about sewing. And the child machine will not be on the shelf any longer. This is an in depth step by step book on how to make your own clothing. From sewing notions to patterns to fabric choices this book has it all. The patterns are simple like the Lazy Shorts, A line Skirt and Pocket Apron. It is all in terms and written for anyone 8+ to understand. I recommend this book for the beginner to intermediate sewer as you can learn a lot from it or refresh on how to sew.
I received this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

My opinion is very much split with this book. The instructions are very clear and concise for children and it’s written in an engaging way that children will relate too. So as far as what the book is setting out to do, ie: teach children to sew, it is brilliant... however... the designs and fabrics are awful. I assume the author has chosen bright bold colours and mixed them together to appeal to children, but they are anything but aesthetically pleasing! I understand the simplicity of the designs as they need to be very basic shapes for the beginner sewer although I do feel they could have been just a bit nicer! I have bought my 7 year old a sewing machine for Christmas and will probably make use of this book as a guide.

This book is a great entry point for a young person interested in fashion, design and/or DIY. With a variety of simple projects, clear directions and ideas for how to alter clothing, the authors have provided ample inspiration for young people to show their own style. The projects are simple enough that even the newest sewist can create a wearable garment, encouraging them to keep going and learn more and more techniques.

Thank you to Amie Petronis Plumley, Andria Lisle, Storey Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. All comments are my own, unbiased opinion.
