A very artist and joyful book illustrating positive quotes (in English and Chinese) with happy kids pictures around.

My interest in this book was largely in trying to understand the belief in the zodiac. I wanted to understand more of what the various animals of the Chinese zodiac stood for. I was a bit disappointed to discover simple photos of infants, their pose or action compared to animals Cute, I suppose.

Absolutely adorable look at the Chinese New Year. This little board book lists each animal of the zodiac in a simple sentence also presented in Mandarin. A diverse group of kids are show demonstrating traits of each animal on the other side, as the animals are all in a race. Recommended for any collection of board books!

A fun Chinese New Year book but not quite what I expected. With a limited library budget I won’t be purchasing this one, but I did learn from it.

This book introduces the reader to the myth of the Chinese Zodiac. The animals are having a race and each two page spread tells us about one of the animals and what it is doing at some point in the race. The text is in both English and Chinese. The picture accompanying the text is of a baby toddler doing a similar action as the animal. The concept is cute, but the story just ends with the rat winning the race and there is nothing more to it. The book appears to be aimed at young children with the photos, but they will not understand the text. I am a bit confused as to how to rate this one. The publisher, Orca Book Publishers, provided me with a copy of this book to read. The rating, ideas and opinions are my own.

I like the concept of The Animals of Chinese New Year more than I actually like the execution. In this book we're introduced to the myth of the Chinese Zodiac. Each two-page spread shows part of the myth (in both English and Chinese) with a matching photo of a child doing an action similar to the one described in the myth. The story ends a bit abruptly to me, without much explanation about why (spoiler alert!) the rat wins. It's a shame, because books like these tend to stay on the reading shelf longer if there is enough story there to hold an older child's interest. I think I would also have preferred to see actual wildlife instead of the babies.

Thank you to NetGalley and Orca Book Publishers for providing me with a DRC of this book.

I try to introduce my Granddaughter to all types of cultures and traditions. When I saw this book I thought it was a great way to introduce her to the Chinese New Year Animals and tradition. The pictures of the children are delightful and appealing and the information written both in English and Chinese is informative. It is a good quick read and will hold childrens interest. I recommend it for ages 3-5.
I received this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
