Thank you Ingram Spark and Netgalley for this ARC.

Wow, my fascination with Alaska was ramped up a few notches with this amazing book. The photography, the beautiful writing and lyrical poetry .........

I wished for this book to read a story about a man who went to live in a rugged country but I got so much more.

A beautiful gift or coffee table book to pick up and reread at whim.

I love good books about Alaska and this is a good one. I loved the stories and
photos very much. The writer was able to give detail about the area and about
the animals living there. Through this book, I was able to spend some time in my
favorite place to dream about visiting.

Most people you meet have "visit Alaska" on their bucket list but have no realistic idea of what that would be like. Many dream of leaving the rat race and living in the back country away from everyone else.
It's not that easy.
Lance Brewer had a goal, become a small plane pilot. He had many reasons and used each as initiative to reach that goal. His life would never be the same.
This non fiction story has more adventure than many of the most popular fiction books. Living in Alaska is not for the faint of heart. Living away from the few populated areas and operating a business with few modern conveniences will either break you or make you. Since Lance is still operating his business and living the life he dreamed, he's proven himself a true Alaskan.
My husband and I lived in Alaska for 30 years. I've read many books about the Alaskan way of life and Lance Brewer's book has earned a place on my book shelf.

A wonderful book about the wilderness that is Alaska.
The author, Lance Brewer, is not a native of the state and he had a steep learning curve to manage himself and survive in his adopted holiday paradise.
He had to hone skills about survival where outside major settlements very few people live and help isn’t just a phone call away. In the process he learned to fly and pick up local knowledge that is passed down in one’s very bones and marrow.
His total involvement with this northern land was filled with sights, sounds and adventures. Memories which were unknown to anyone who has just swept their path of snow, de-iced a car windscreen or slipped on an untreated pavement.
He yearned for a chance to share this last frontier with family and friends and went about setting up a base of operations where they could stay and access fish and game. Catch Salmon and hunt moose.
Central to his plans was transport and he mastered the hazardous matter of learning to fly in poor weather and negative visibility to land on water and ice.
His journal is a diary of many of these adventures and encounters with nature; problems solved and setbacks overcome.
The book is littered with wonderful photographs that bring colour and a vibrant reality to his words and he has moments of inspiration when his thoughts flow in verse and his poetry enrich his narrative.
A book of adventure, travel and friendship. I loved the fans introduction into the mushing and dog sledging as they literally follow and drop in on the Iditarod.
A cool book, a cold landscape that is filled with a warmth of people to melt the most frozen heart.

I wanted so much to love this book. I'm sure it is filled with lovely memories and anecdotes. But the formatting, or lack thereof, kept pulling me out of the narrative. For example, hyphens in the middle of words that they did not belong. And not at the end of sentences, that might have made sense. No, in the middle of sentences. The first words of each chapter were mangled as well. The first letter was overly large and the following letters smaller than the rest of the text.

I'm sure this was a great book, but the lack of formatting just would not allow me to immerse myself into this book like I wanted to. And I thought that was a shame.
I do hope it's fixed soon.
