To be honest, I really didn't think I was going to like this book much when I first started it. I liked Seireadan, who was a Fae Seer, but I didn't like Aohdan, the Fae Patriarch of Boston, at all. I'm glad I decided to stick with it, though, because to get to know Aohdan is to love him, as they say. He's extremely loyal to his closest friends and even though it doesn't seem like it at first, he's actually very fair.

"Over six hundred years ago, one faerie - the Seelie king's brother, Luan - had unleashed a spell so foul and dark that it destroyed the entire Faerie realm. That spell became known as the Desolation, and to escape it, the faerie races, or what was left of them, fled to the human realm, sealing the portal doors behind them."

Both Seireadan and Aohdan have a connection to the Desolation that haunts them still. You have to wonder how that will affect any relationship they try to have.

I enjoyed this book very much and look forward to reading more of Ms. Hamilton's work.

4/5 stars.

"Shadow King" isn't really my cup of tea. Overall, the writing is just okay but the plot and the characters weren't anything too interesting.

II had to DNF this book at the 50% point. I wasn’t able to connect with the characters, and I didn’t find the plot enough to sustain my interest.

This was an entertaining read, but nothing to exciting. To me it gave off toned down 50 Shades of Grey feel in a fantasy world. It started off slow, but did pick up pace about half way through. I will want to check out the sequels to see how everything plays out, but I won’t be running out to get them as soon as they release.

Susan K. Hamilton shows herself to be a master world builder in a book that works like the best fantasy novels should. The cover could use a bit of a polish, but the contents are worth the read.

The Fae realm has been compromised by a spell. Relegated to the human realm, Aohdan is the kingpin of the Boston underworld. The love affair between Aohdan and Seiradan is haunted by her quest to finding her family's killer. Drawn deep into their world, she realizes he can help her find the killer.

I really enjoyed this book. I've been in a bit of a reading slump recently, so this was a welcome surprise. The world, characters and, story were all interesting and engaging. And I was thrilled that he outcome was different than I had anticipated. My only complaint was that I wished that both Ronan and the Seelie King had been more fleshed out, and their motivations further explored. Beyond that this was an exciting UF, and I can't wait for more!
