Such a good thriller and brilliant character study. I loved how the relationships were so complex in this book. There is a bit of unreliable narrator plot stuff going on—I kind of saw it coming as I’ve read Cyn Balog’s previous work, but still… A great mystery with a solid twist.

Recommended.

Caution: you might be up late reading this one…

I loved this book from the get go.

This is an author who I'd never come across before, I'm unsure if this is their debut novel, or if I've been sleeping under a rock, but I loved this book. I think the author's writing style is amazing. Immediately I was drawn in by the story of Hailey and the Weeks Boys. Declan, who had killed himself a year prior, and Kane, the best friend who only wanted the best for Hailey. There were points where I found Hailey hard to connect with but once I got over her recklessness and began to find out more about her story and she began to work past her amnesia, I wanted to know more.

I literally read this book in one sitting.

I did find my suspicions that more was at foot as soon as we found out that Hailey did have amnesia as it indicated she knew more than what she was letting on. I even found myself suspecting everyone around her for foul play.

The mystery elements of this book were super interesting and I look forward to reading more from this author.

My goodreads and blog post will be up promptly.

From the first page, THAT NIGHT grabs hold and won’t let go until the final word has been read. The tension builds steadily to the final moments when all is revealed, and it is a twist you won’t see coming.

Cyn Balog has always had a way with plot twists and character development, but the way she seamlessly adds in THE GREAT GATSBY is genius. Every high schooler has to read Fitzgerald’s tale of one man’s attempt to recover the past as another watches the inevitable train wreck from the sidelines.

Ms. Balog expertly weaves a thrilling tale of the Weeks’ boys and the girl next door, and how love can lead to obsession and even death. This is definitely a fast-paced, worthwhile read for teenagers and adults alike. 5 out of 5 stars!

When I first started this book I was a little turned off on the consistent time changes. It starts out with Declan (Hailey's boyfriend)'s suicide. Then it jumps back in time to talk about their relationships and friendships that Declan, Hailey and Declan's step brother Kane had with each other. I really enjoyed this book because it shows how even though Declan was presenting himself as the happy care free person that you can't always tell what is going on with a person on the inside no matter how close you are to them. Not only did it show that but it also showed the pain that loved ones go through when someone they care about commits suicide. I liked how Hailey found out the secrets both about what happened to Declan but also about the ones that cause him to do what he did. It was like a mystery that I was trying to solve along with our main character, and we were both getting the information through her flashbacks. Interesting book I've never read anything quite like it before so it was nice and refreshing to have such a unique mystery. The grief that Hailey felt in this story was so raw and painful that I felt it myself as a reader. I'm very glad that I got the chance to check out this story. It was a very interesting mystery but not to dark or sad. Wow the ending it put a whole different spin on the story and that is where the darkness came that I was searching for. Great read! I wish that I would be able to experience it again for the first time. It was so unexpected. Check out this book, you won't regret it!

This novel might work for upper grade teens who cannot get enough of unreliable narrators or who enjoy reading about teenage relationships & emotions at their most toxic, but for me, this story just made me kinda tired.

Hailey has a lot of questions. She can’t remember anything from the weeks leading up to her boyfriend’s suicide, yet she can’t shake the feeling that he would not have done it. Her best friend, Kane, is also Declan’s stepbrother and he wants everyone to move on with their lives, not sit around and try to remember. As Hailey looks for answers, she begins to remember more and more. Did Declan really kill himself? What truths will Hailey find out along the way?

That Night is a stand-alone mystery with only a few twists and turns throughout the pages. Balog has created a story that readers will easily be able to relate to, they just need to pay attention to the timeline since this story is not told chronologically. That Night is not a very long book and can easily be finished in just a couple of sittings. Although it is not a drop-everything-and-read book, it was an enjoyable read with a satisfying ending. I recommend this book to anyone who wants an easy mystery to relax the time away.

This is a hard book to review, because I think I love and hate it. It is seriously disturbing and chilling in a way that took me by surprise, especially near the end of the novel.

Hailey’s boyfriend, Declan, has died of suicide, but Hailey can’t understand why. Isn’t the Declan she remembers happy, in love with her, and looking forward to the future? This story follows two timelines surrounding Declan’s death. First, we have the story that begins a year before, in which we meet Hailey, Declan, Luisa, and Kane (Declan’s new step-brother and Hailey’s lifelong friend), our main characters. Second, we have a year after the suicide, where Kane is trying to help Hailey move on. But Hailey has dissociative amnesia, and strange clues have been leading her to the suspicion that there is something she isn’t remembering about the weeks preceding the suicide. As both timelines move forward, we get more pieces of information that help us learn the truth in this story full of jealousy, love, hate, and maybe murder?

I received a DIGITAL Advance Reader Copy of this book from #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review of #ThatNight

Very slow building suspenseful story. Normally I would have given it 3 stars, but since I was not even close with my guess... I gave it an extra star for keeping.me on the edge of my seat. This story will have you mourning with them, mad at their actions and completely doing a 180 with how you feel about the characters at the start to how you do, by then end. May be a little spoilery from now on.

Out story starts off 1 year after the event - Hailey is having a very hard time dealing with her boyfriends suicide. She has spent months in a facility, she is self harming and her best friend Kane(step brother of Declan, Hailey's boyfriend) is trying to help her move on, but Hailey is resistant since she doesn't think Declan would kill himself. If only she could remember what happened the weeks leading up to that day... her therapist calls is dissociative amnesia. On the anniversary of the suicide Declan's mom gives Hailey a box of his things, she also questions her about a picture she found. On the picture it says... THiS ENDS NOW - the picture is blurry but appears to be Declan and someone having sex, but it is hard to tell. This leads Hailey to start investing Declan's suicide. As she starts to uncover things, her memories slowly return, in flashbacks between present chapters(so make sure to pay attention to chapter titles) There are 4 main players in the events that lead up to the, "why" that Hailey is searching for . We know most of the story of Hailey, Kane and Declan... but Kane's on again off again girlfriend Luisa plays a role and we only learn about her through a jaded pov. I would have loved to hear some of her side of the story.

As a parent I was shocked by the lack of parent involvement in their teens lives. The parents were too engrossed in their own things to see what was happening right in front of them. One little push or talk from a parent could have changed the whole outcome.

Part mystery, part study of grief and guilt, this book will resonate with many readers. As we learn about the night Hailey’s boyfriend commits suicide, we learn how she and her peers deal with the aftermath of the event. Told in back and forth present and flashback, a tale of teenage life, love, and heartbreak is revealed.
I loved the twists of this book. Teens will love this book.

YA thrillers can be a bit hit or miss and this one hit more than it missed. There are potential triggers in this book so it is best avoided if you are affected by any of the issues. I read it really quickly and was mostly satisfied with the story. Thanks to the publisher and netgalley for an eARC.

A dark and overwhelming read about a young woman who can't remember why her boyfriend commited suicide. The grief of this book can be felt from the main character through the pages. It is a suspenseful and real look at how people with real problems can affect each other. All the main character are really shallow people who don't treat each other well. I think it's a good read for teens to see how treating addiction and mental health are important.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me an E-arc copy of this novel. I have given my opinion freely.

Ever since the pair of them were young, Hailey and Kane have been inseparable and the best of friends. They were also each other's first when they were fifteen. It happened, and they never talked about it again. The pair though they were considered in different cliques as Kane was the boy everyone wanted and Hailey was one of the normal they were still friends. Then summer happened, and Kane's dad got married, and he acquired a new stepbrother who was a couple of years older than him - Declan. All of a sudden everyone wanted a piece of Declan and Hailey fell hard for him. The pair started dating, and Kane began dating Hailey's on/off again friend Luisa. Then fast forward a year later, and it's Valentine's day, and Declan is found dead. He supposedly has committed suicide. The book fast forwards to a year after the incident and Hailey is trying to settle back into normal life and routine when Declan's mother gives her a box of his stuff. Inside is a photograph which states "It ends here now." This propels Hailey into trying to figure out what happened as the Declan she remembers would never have committed suicide. Along the way, we learn that Hailey has selective amnesia and can't remember a few months leading up to the incident. Will Hailey be ready to learn the awful truth and that her fairytale romance of Declan wasn't all roses and happiness and that sometimes the truth is better off hidden? That Night was a long YA read but worth the suspense at the end and makes you question two things, what would you do to protect the one you love if they were in trouble and do we know the ones we love, their deep dark secrets and skeletons in their closets?

Powerful and disturbing, #ThatNight by Cyn Balog was a nail biting suspense voiced from the perspective of Hailey, a teenager dealing with the aftermath of her boyfriend Declan's suicide.

I read this with so many churning emotions, from sympathy to shock. Hailey, clearly grieving the overwhelming loss and trying to piece back her memories after a stint at a rehab, recounts the days before the suicide and the present as she suspects there is something more sinister about Declan's death. And, she thinks Kane, her best friend and Declan's stepbrother, knows more than he's telling her.

The author does such a great job of setting up the characters. Kane and his girlfriend, Luisa, are central to the story. While I thought Kane was a man-whore and Luisa kind of a bitch, those impressions constantly changed as their true characters came to light.

I read this with growing horror, page by page, as Hailey's memories return and she confronts the shocking truth. The final chapter seemed almost anticlimactic compared to the mic drop when Hailey figures it all out.

Thank you to #NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of #ThatNight and kudos to an amazing author for carrying the story so brilliantly from first page to final reveal.

Hailey’s boyfriend Declan committed suicide and she just can’t move on with her life, even one year later. Declan’s step-brother Kane has a hold on Hailey, even though he dates Luisa off and on. Told in flashback and present day, Cyn Balog weaves a tale of love, hate, jealousy, and teen angst. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to be an early reader in exchange for my review.

Cyn balog is a great author. I’ve read a few of her books, and they’ve all been quick easy reads for me. So I knew what to expect with this book. I loved this book. Truly. I read through it in a few short hours. She never disappoints with her work. Honestly, just get it. Don’t question it. Read it now!

This was a really fast read. It kept me guessing the entire time I was making my way through the story. The depth of depression that Hail tries to drag herself out of is gut wrenching..

I flew through this book - finished the whole thing in one day! I really liked the back and forth format, retelling the past as well as showing her struggles today. The plot was good. It kept me interested and guessing. I wanted to keep reading to uncover more. However, the characters were not my favorite. I did not like any of them - especially developing a dislike to the protagonist. I didn't expect her to be able to drop everything and move on but I felt like she was being harsh to the people trying to help her without really trying to grow. The background characters were flat at best. But luckily you didn't need to focus much on the characters themselves to become involved in the story. I recommend this book for any thriller lover looking for an easy read that doesn't mind a lack of likable characters.

TW: Suicide, self-harm

Oh yes. I couldn't put it down till I finish it. This books is so crazy, the characters so messed up. And again, I couldn't stop reading it once I started. The main character, Hailey, just lost her boyfriend and is trying to survive this big trauma. After some months on medication, she is back and ready to know exactly what happened with Declan. What she knows, deeply in her heart, is that he wouldn't kill himself... But she forgot a lot. All she remembers is that they loved each other, so much. He said they would be forever. What now?

Yes. I really like YA thrillers, even if I don't like adolescent drama that much, and it's constant in this one. But I really cared about the plot. Not much for the characters, to be honest, but it kept my attention. I was so curious about the end! Had so many theories about everything! But when that came I just... Bleh. Not the biggest surprise. Was not super disappointing tho, but I was expecting something more.

I would recommend it if you enjoy books like "One of Us is Lying", "Wintergirls" and young adult thrillers in general. But again: heavy topics.

I wanted to like this, but I just couldn't. It felt like it was trying to be a different book - maybe One Of Us Is Lying ? - and I just couldn't get past that sense of imposter syndrome.

Thank you NetGalley and Sourcebooks for the ARC in exchange for my opinion.

I was not expecting to fly through this book like I did, but everyone is right, it is a quick read. As, is the format with most books nowadays, it is told in 2 times, before Declan's suicide and after. It is a teen thriller and it is well done. I empathized with Hailey more than I thought i would. Especially because at time she almost seems obessed which is what I think led to her downfall.

This book was an emotional roller coaster which I truly enjoyed once I got into it. I do want to give a trigger warning because it does deal with suicide and touches on the struggle of mental health as well.

Quick but good read!
