Relation of Virginia by Henry Spelman & Karen Ordahl Kupperman is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in early March.
The 17th century writings of Henry Spelman of meeting with Native populations (mostly the Powhatan) to learn their languages and train diplomats, though it was published in the latter 19th century around Victorian times. Its cleanly transcribed text is a page away from the preserved written journal, then a direct Olde English transcription finishes it all off. At its core, it’s an ideal room-where-it-happened ethnography, since it takes place chronologically after making landfall in 1609, then writing of multitheism, charting flora & fauna, Native culture, and customs.
