A twisted retelling of Snow White? I think yes!

I absolutely loved reading this book. Especially when we get to see more behind minds of the villains. Because who doesn't like a villain?

It gave me extreme Once Upon a Time tv show vibes which I am also completely obsessed with. I was engaged from chapter one leaving me wanting to dive deeper into this twisted story.

This book deserved every last bit of the 5 out of 5 stars I give it. If you love Disney or OUAT, you need to get your hands on this book!

Actual Rating: Somewhere around 3.5-4 stars

I love Disney movies, but I’ve never been that into Snow White. Even so, I have enjoyed the other books in this series, so I wished for this book on NetGalley. I didn’t expect I’d actually get a copy!!!

To say the beginning didn’t capture me would be a lie. The Prologue was exciting and I couldn’t wait to dive into the book. Then, I got to the chapters narrated by Ingrid, the Evil Queen. I didn’t like those parts because they were a bit boring and all Ingrid did was complain. Snow White found the best in everything and everyone, so I enjoyed her chapters much better.

The romance was much more believable in this book than it was in the movie. Henri and Snow actually have time to bond, unlike their one short meeting at the beginning of the movie. I think that and the fact that Snow White was more fierce in this book is what made it so good.

For fans of Disney who didn’t quite enjoy the movie “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” I think you’ll enjoy this much better!

This is the first book that I’ve read in the Twisted Tales series. I love adaptations of fairytales, so I knew I would love this book!

This book is a modern adaptation of the classic Disney movie Snow White. It follows both Snow and the Evil Queen, Ingrid. I liked how familiar the story was, since I grew up watching the movie. It’s been many years since I watched it, but the characters were the same, so I could imagine what they looked like.

Though this story is based on the Disney movie, it has more modern themes. Snow is a leader who takes charge of the plan to remove the Evil Queen from power. She has more power than the original Snow White would have had in the 1937 movie. Gender roles were reversed when her prince was placed in a glass coffin instead of her (This is not a spoiler because it happens in the prologue). Snow is a much more active character in this modern story.

I loved this story! I’ll definitely have to check out the other books in the series.

Thank you to Disney Book Group for providing me an e-galley of this book via NetGalley.

**I received an advanced copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own**
Actual rating: 3.5 stars
I actually really enjoyed this book! I love that the princess (Snow White in this case) wasn't waiting around for a prince to come and save her. She actually wanted to do things for herself and in the end, it was her saving the prince, instead of the other way around.
The only reason this book didn't get four stars is because I personally don't enjoy the way middle grade books are written. It's more of a personal thing than anything else. There honestly was nothing wrong with the book at all, it's just written more for a younger audience. Would I read more books by this author though? Absolutely! I honestly see myself checking out the other books in this series as well!

This was a great twist on the Snow White story! Since this was my first Twisted Tales book, I will have to read the ones that came before this! I hope we'll see even more and that the others are as good as this one!

I loved this newest installment in the twisted tales series. I loved Anna and Snow was such a strong character in this tale (she certainly wasn't in the movie). I can't wait to see what the next twisted tale is going to be.

Mirror, Mirror is an enjoyable and quick read that lovers of Disney, both old and new, will enjoy.

I am a HUGE Disney lover and although Snow White isn’t my favorite of the Princesses, the Evil Queen was always one of my favorite villains. This story of “what if” shows a whole new side to this tale and I found myself drawn to Ingrid’s POV throughout the book. I mean, she is still evil but who doesn’t enjoy a good villain story?

A sucker for retellings, this first taste of the Twisted Tales series will not be my last!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book to read and give my own opinions.

I know I will have a lot of students who will love this book!
I love the flip of the prince getting poisoned and Snow White having to save him. Girl Power!! It added so much to her character and made it more interesting than the original tale.
Overall this was a good book, there were parts that sometimes dragged, but I can't wait to get it for my classroom.

I am a huge fan of fairytale retellings and so when I was granted my wish for this book from NetGalley I was sooo excited to start reading it right away!! Unfortunately it took me a while to get the rest of my books read before I could start this one but boy was I happy once I finally got to crack it open and jump into the wonderful world of Disney! And even better, the familiar story of Snow White but with a small twist... in this version of Snow White, it’s the prince who is poisoned by The Evil Queen instead of Snow, and it’s up to Snow to defeat her evil aunt and save her kingom before it’s destroyed  by The Evil Queen’s greed and lust for power.

I think when reading this retelling it was a lot different than most retellings because this series is published by Disney Hyperion so therefore the names and places and characters aren’t changed. We really do meet all seven of the dwarves: Sleepy, Grumpy, Sneezy, Bashful, Happy, Doc, and Dopey! It was also interesting because it held so true to the story we all know but in this case we get a lot more of the backstory. We learn about The Evil Queen and why she became so, well, evil and where she acquired her infamous magic mirror. We also learn a little more about Snow’s childhood and how she is related to The Evil Queen, her Aunt Ingrid. The only thing we were missing was the talking mice!!

World building and character building was pretty straight forward since this was a story we already know. But as with all books versus movies, it’s all in the details in the book! And of course in this case the added details such as the aviary in the castle gardens where Snow’s love of animals and birds grew from her mother’s love for her winged beauties. The history behind the story brings more insight on the characters we love, and through their past we begin to realize how things came to be in the present story we already know. I love learning more of the story and what makes these characters tick. I think that’s also why I enjoyed the chapters of Ingrid (the evil queen) because through her chapters you see that she wasn’t always evil, but over time and through greed she was driven to darkness. It’s interesting that the choices made throughout the lives of Ingrid and Snow’s mother, Katherine, led to such different paths. Katherine becoming a kind and benevolent Queen who is loved by all and who instills love and kindness into her daughter. And then Ingrid who feels like she must do all the corrupt and dark deeds to protect her sister’s innocence and through this she inevitably corrupts her own heart with lust and greed. Being brainwashed by an evil mirror doesn’t help things either but power doesn’t come without a price and unfortunately Ingrid learns this the hard way.

The romance in the way of all Disney movies is definitely quite a bit of insta love but we knew that was going to be the case anyway. It was sweet and I liked the dynamic between Henric and Snow. We all secretly want our own Prince Charming to come along and woo us from upon our balcony as we look down at his dreamy face and blush and be doted upon. Or is that just me? Lol!! Anyway, it’s sweet and I like how he is loyal to Snow and driven to help her defeat her evil aunt and take back what is rightfully hers! Of course we know from the beginning that he is doomed to a sleep like death, it’s still sweet to see the relationship between him and Snow grow throughout the book.

Even though it was a lot of fun revisiting an old story, it also was one of the things that took away from the enjoyment of this book. While there was a small twist, and we did get some background to the characters that we didn’t know previously, the plot was really straight forward and spot on to the original story of Snow White. This lead to it being very predictable. I kept waiting for a big plot twist or something to surprise me and make me say wow, but other than Henric being poisoned instead of Snow, it follows the original story very closely. I also think that there were many things that were just assumed to be key details that weren’t explained or utilized any more than just in mentions here and there, such as Snow’s connection to animals and especially birds. There is a crow or raven mentioned quite a few times but we never find out why it’s following her. There also mention of deer that often show up at the dwarve’s cottage but never a reason for any mention of this.. it felt like some opportunities missed in these details.  I also feel like it really didn’t make much of a difference in the story that Henric was poisoned instead of Snow.. this was the big twist that was supposed to draw us into this retelling but I didn’t see the significance of this change. In the end the story was so similar that the plot twist wasn’t much of a twist, it was too similar to what we already knew about this fairytale.

In the end though, it’s a great story of the power of love and kindness in the face of evil and greed. How all it takes is someone to believe in themselves and what they stand for to brave what all others fear. And how you might think that going down a path that feels like your only option no matter how corrupt isn’t the right thing to do, but the easy way out. And in the end easy isn’t better. Being true to yourself will attract the right attention and give you all your heart deserves and desires. Family is what is important and to protect those we love, we must stay true to ourselves and do it with honor and trust and honesty. I love fairytales for their morals and lessons to learn and there is a big one to be heard in this story. I think that this a great addition to this series and I look forward to the rest to come!

I great twist on the original Snow White. I thought that this retelling was nicely done! I loved getting more insight into Ingrid (the Evil Queen). I would recommend this book to any fairy tale lover!!

My favorite of the Twisted Tales! This was a retelling of Snow White and while I'm still suffering from an incident with the Evil Queen when I was 3, I was drawn to the character in this book. Each of the Twisted Tales can be read as a standalone and I was SO excited to get an early copy. Definitely a great addition to the series!

A fantastical twist on the original story, this book had me glued to my iPad from the moment I opened it right until the very end. I enjoyed how the author gave so much backstory to the Evil Queen’s and her origins thereby giving a sort of reasoning as to why she became the evil queen and what led her down the path of evil. Having the story behind the mirror was also enjoyable as I don’t think this angle has ever been done where the mirror plays such a huge role in the story. I fell in love with this more independent Snow White whose happy ending didn’t really revolve around a prince in a white steed and that she was the one that saved the prince? Loved that. We definitely need more spins like this in our classical Disney stories.

I am so in love with this series of books, and so I couldnt have been more excited when I got an ARC of this book.
Well written and imaginative, it was so fun to get a different perspective into this classic tale. I loved getting a look into Snow's childhood and seeing what kind of a person the author thought her mother would be. A great read for fans of snow white's story and fairy tale retellings.

This was a good fairy tale retelling. With so many retellings out there I am always a little apprehensive about how each will set itself apart. This book definitely followed the story closer than other retellings that are loose interpretations. I liked this being closer to the original and the nostalgia that came with it. If you are a Disney fan this is a must!

Snow White is one my favorite fairy tales! I thought that this was a very fresh and unique take on the beloved fairy tale. The author does an excellent job in fleshing out the characters. I really sympathized with the Evil Queen! Overall, I recommend this for fans of Julie C. Dao, Shannon Hale, and C. J. Redwine!

The YA community has been loving retellings for the last little while and there’s been an endless supply of them this book was no exception it was a fresh take on the Evil Queen and Snow White that we’ve all come to love.
I do however wish we got more in-depth with the characters. Who would of know the step mothers name was Ingrid? I didn’t. A bit more of a story for the characters would of been nice.
Still an enjoyable book for almost all ages

Ahhhh, Snow White. I have always had a soft spot in my heart for this story but let's be honest, we all know my favorite character is the Evil Queen.

Jen Calonita's retelling is perfect for Snow White fans, no matter your favorite character, as it is told from alternating perspectives of Snow and the Evil Queen, named within these pages, Ingrid.

There are multiple small twists to the Disney version, most of us are familiar with, and it was just enough to give it a new and exciting feel. While paying homage to the original story, you still feel compelled to keep turning the pages to find out what is going to happen.

There is nothing super ground-breaking about this but I think if you go into it just looking for a fun, quick read -- an escape from the world -- you can have a heck of an enjoyable time with Mirror, Mirror. That was what I was hoping for when I picked this up and I got it.

I would have liked a bit more depth to the characters, Snow and the Evil Queen both, but I do think they had enough nuance to keep you engaged with them. I also feel like this reads more on the younger end of the YA-spectrum, maybe even verging on Middle Grade, so just know that going in.

Overall, I would recommend this to any Disney fan, especially people who like to get the villains perspective every once in a while. This is the second book I have read in the Twisted Tales series and you better believe I am going to keep reading them as long as they are putting them out!

Thank you to the publisher, Disney Book Group, for providing me a copy to read and review! As always, I appreciate the opportunity and am excited to discuss this with other readers.

Snow White was the first Disney movie I ever watched. Really it was the first fairytale I'd ever heard. So this is definitely a story that holds a special place in my heart.

"What if the Evil Queen poisoned the prince?"

That's certainly a different take on a much beloved tale. But that's not the only twist.
You also get a true backstory for the Evil Queen, as well as Snow's mother. Which is one character you never hear anything about. Besides her death.

I think this was one of the best Snow White fairy tale retellings I’ve read in a long time!
Let’s see….This book just sucked me in almost from the start. I finished it within a day. We had the dwarfs. Name another Snow White retelling that has the dwarfs in it because I can’t think of any that has them in it other than Once Upon a Time, but that’s a tv show, not a book.

The evil queen was evil enough in the way that it was just well done. We had flashbacks for Snow and the evil queen.

The only flaw I saw was that I felt more connected between the other characters instead of the romance plot. I thought the purpose of Henri’s story should had happened sooner than it did to make it stand out more. I don’t want to give too much more than this because I don’t want to spoil it for anybody.

Overall, Mirror, Mirror was still one of the best Snow White retellings. It was a five star read based on the fast paced, characters, flash backs and the connection between other characters and the evil queen herself.
Thank you Netgalley and publishers for giving me the chance to read and review the book! This had no impact on my thoughts. My thoughts were my own.

I was given an electronic ARC from Disney Book Group through NetGalley.
This is the sixth in Calonita's twisted fairy tales series. This time she presents a different take on Snow White. There's still an evil queen, Snow White, seven dwarves and a handsome prince but the tale unfolds with a bolder role for Snow White.
Calonita provides the back story on Snow White's parents and aunt Ingrid. Readers see the struggles her mom and aunt went through and the way their paths diverged based on the same circumstances. Ingrid's desire for power and wealth led her to a dark magic path with the magic mirror. NOTE: Be warned - Dark magic involves blood letting to sustain power.
Snow White escapes after the Huntsman cannot kill her. The story picks up with the cottage and the dwarves but shifts again as Prince Henri finds her and share that he has found her father. She continues to learn the truth about what has happened in her kingdom and decides to take it back from Ingrid.
No spoilers in this review but I like the stronger female protagonist and enjoyed the twist with the poison apple. Calonita spins a magical tale that draws the reader in to the action and provides enough description to visualize the scene easily.
Definitely for the young adult audience not elementary level readers.
