This is a fun, cozy short read. Although, it did not read like a "short" story. It had everything to make a "great" story. Entertaining characters, a good storyline with plenty of twists, and a satisfying ending. The more I get to know of D. D.; the more I love her. She is very intelligent. Additionally, I learned something new. The main character who dies suffered from Cotard's syndrome, a neurological disorder.

Per Wiki "Cotard delusion is a rare mental illness in which the affected person holds the delusional belief that they are already dead, do not exist, are putrefying, or have lost their blood or internal organs. Statistical analysis of a hundred-patient cohort indicates that the denial of self-existence is a symptom present in 45% of the cases of Cotard's syndrome; yet, paradoxically, 55% of the patients present delusions of immortality. "

I tried to piece together all of the puzzle pieces from the different characters but I was not as smart as D.D. The way the mystery all came together in the end did leave me with a few "ah, ha" moments. This short story is a nice one to get me ready for the next full length novel.

The guy who died twice is a Great short story by Lisa Gardner, I was sad that it was over so quick! I usually dint read books that are less than 300 pages but I was given the chance to read this and am glad i did. If you enjoy her DD Warren books this one will not disappoint!

A quick and thought-provoking short story by the great Lisa Gardner. It’s a bizarre murder mystery featuring my favorite detective, D.D. Warren. When I say bizarre, I mean it- the murder victim declares himself dead (not threatened or a premonition of being killed but DEAD) to the Boston PD hours before he is murdered. And from there, you are hooked.

I received this ARC,as well as Never Tell, yesterday from Penguin Random House / Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review. Thanks for the opportunity!!

This is a short story that D.D. Warren fans will enjoy. It is a stand alone story that is a fast-paced “who done it” story with lots of characters. Lisa Gardner keeps the reader guessing until the very end.

A man walks into the police headquarters and tries to convince the squad that's he is dead. Of course they explain to him that he is very much alive and breathing, then send him on his way. But a few hours later, the man turns up actually dead. No, this is not a corny joke. It is the strangest case that Detective D.D. Warren has ever confronted. This is the short story of The Guy Who Died Twice.

Even though this new release is part of the Detective D.D. Warren series, it can be read as a standalone short story. It will make a great introduction to the main character and her crime scene analyst husband for those unfamiliar. Lisa Gardner is one of those consistent authors; you can count on great storytelling.

Happy Early Pub Day & Happy Holidays, Lisa Gardner! The Guy Who Died Twice will be available Tuesday, January 8, 2019.

A quckie from Lisa Gardner - can be read as a stand alone even if you don't know the characters from previous books :)

Humor, family drama, murder, and more all rolled into a very quick story that was just about perfect.

The Guy Who Died Twice is a very entertaining short story from established author, Lisa Gardner. Gardner reveals the story in a series of flashbacks, with the primary character, police detective D.D. Warren, relating the details of her most recent case to her husband. The entire story takes place in just one day.

Detective D.D.Warren brags to her husband, a police crime scene analyst, that she has just solved the “strangest case”. Apparently, the couple has an ongoing competition for the strangest police case. The LaToile case is definitely far from routine and may deserve the title, “strangest”.

Adam LaToile walks into his local police station and declares that he is dead. Of course, the detectives think Adam is delusional. Strangely enough, two hours later Detective Warren receives a phone call from Adam’s wife reporting that he is now, indeed, dead. Warren and her partner arrive at the LaToile home to find that Adam has been murdered. The home is well-secured, so everyone there, Mrs. LaToile, the household staff and Adam’s doctor, is a suspect. Detective Warren cracks the case through the process of elimination, but the twist that reveals the killer is unexpected.

As a fan of Lisa Gardner, I expected and received a great read. The characters and plot are brilliantly developed in the short span of the story. I recommend this short story to all fans of a good mystery. Even readers that shy away from shorts will find this one worthy. I rate it 5 out of 5 stars.

My thanks to Penguin Group Dutton and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy. However the opinions expressed in this review are 100% mine and mine alone.

A man goes into a police station and tells them he is dead. He is convinced he is dead. Hours later he is found stabbed to death so now he really is dead. This story takes place in one day and in one location. I really had no idea which direction this story was headed or who did it. I did enjoy the book even though I am not a fan of short stories. I read to fast so a short story is done too fast.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley for an unbiased review

A man walks into a police station insisting he has been murdered. With a record of mental issues, he is sent home. Less than nine hours later, he is stabbed to death in the Guy Who Died Twice.

Detective D.D. Warren and her partner investigate the man’s murder. Arriving home that evening, D.D. walks her husband Alex, a police crime scene analyst, through the crime. Together, they solve the mystery.

There are plenty of suspects, means and motives here. The Guy Who Died Twice is a fun chance to play armchair detective with only an hour or so time invested. This is an easy way to see if the D.D. Warren series is for you as it can be read as a standalone and clocks in at less than 90 pages. 4 stars!

Thanks to Dutton Books and NetGalley for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

This Clue-esque murder mystery was so fun to read. It's a short one, clocking in at 96 pages, so it's great for a palate cleanser between books, or even as a tool for procrastination.

The story has a small cast of characters and takes place on one day, in one location. We learn just enough about each person to get a small insight into their personalities, so we can try to figure out who did it and why.

The premise is catchy and the solution to the mystery isn't completely predictable. There's enough misdirection to cause second guessing, but the outcome isn't too far fetched.

I'll be honest, I like pretty much anything Lisa Gardner writes, and this short story was no exception.

I received an ARC of this book from Dutton, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review. Expected date of publication is January 8.

I also received an ARC for Lisa Gardner's next book, Never Tell, which comes out later in February. Look for my review closer to the publish date.

The story was very good, I didn't guess the end at all. Im not a fan of short stories, they read like the outline for the full book. That's the only reason it's not among my favorite Lisa Gardner books.

This is a fun, twisty short story befitting the DD Warren-universe that will pique your interest immediately and keep it throughout.

This novella has Detective D.D. Warren sharing the story of the man who called police to report his own death. Plainly still alive, the man insists he is, in reality dead. Believing the man has psychiatric issues, D.D. and her team leave, only to be called back hours later to find that the same man is dead, for real this time. Reading more like an Agatha Christie whodunnit with a cast of characters who all had motives, this is a little teaser for fans who are waiting for the newest full length Gardner mystery

This is a short story by one of my favorite authors and as short stories go, the story line and the plot isn’t as layered and refined in a full-length nove, but nevertheless it is quite good. It opens with a man that enters the police station reporting he had died earlier that day. That obviously not being the case, he is sent home. But a few hours later, the police is being alarmed that the man is now very much dead, having been stabbed to death. The remainder of the story tells the background story through interviews with staff, the widow etc.
While the story is well put together for a short story, the conclusion isn’t entirely surprising. I’m now looking forward to reading the next full length novel.

Lisa Gardner is one of my favorite authors, especially her D. D. Warren series, so I was glad to see this short story available through NetGalley. This doesn't have Flora Dane in it but the rest of D.D.'s crew are on hand to investigate a most unusual case.

I especially enjoyed the method of having D. D. relate the case to her husband as they were relaxing at home. The entire crime/case had taken place during that work day so it felt as if readers were privy to listening in on the after-work conversation of a real couple. This case was patterned along the lines of a locked room mystery except in this case it was a locked house. The owner of the house had gone to police headquarters early that morning to report his death - to say that he was dead. Just a few hours later he was found murdered in his bedroom. So how did it happen?

Luckily I had not even tried to solve this because I would have been totally wrong. Oh, how wrong! I did enjoy the story and there is a portion of the next book in the D. D. Warren series at the end of this story. The first chapter of Never Tell should be enough to leave you impatient for that book to be released in February 2019.

The Guy Who Died Twice is a new D.D. Warren short story by Lisa Gardner. This fast paced mystery starts out with a challenge, where D.D. is describing a case that she is calling a winner in the strangest case category. The reader gets to delve into the mystery as D.D. tells her husband Alex, a crime scene analyst, the details of the case.
She begins by telling him that a gentleman, by the name of Adam LaToile, came into the Boston HQ and wanted to speak with a detective in charge regarding a murder. He was literally coming in to tell a detective that he was already dead. Alex tries to clarify her point by asking if he thought that he was the target of a murder. D.D. explains that, in fact, Adam LaToile believes that he is dead, as in no pulse or brain activity. That he is dead.
Alex asks her to start at the beginning. D.D. tells the story about how Adam is sorry to come to them like this, but he must convince someone that he is dead. And then the story gets really interesting, when D.D. tells Alex that two hours later, they get a call from Mrs. LaToile and that he is now, really dead. The investigative team goes to the LaToile house and finds him with a giant knife between his shoulder blades.
The rest of the details of this case you will have to investigate for yourselves. It’s a fantastic story and because all of the suspects are in one house, you have a finite amount of options to choose from.
Each new set of clues that D.D. gives to her husband has the reader changing their idea of who the guilty party may be.
I hope you enjoy The Guy Who Died Twice as much as I did. Treat yourself to some reading time this winter and enjoy a great mystery.

I requested this because I thought it was a D.D. Warren novel. Over eager, I guess. I don't usually choose short stories and didn't like the way this one was told. I was looking for a D.D. Warren and hopefully, Flora Dane installment. Should have read more carefully before getting so excited. Thanks for the opportunity, and I hope there will be a full-length installment soon.
