This tale is woven around a mysterious place where people go to die, not willingly of course. These people are criminals and that's their penalty. But two girls decide they don't want to die so soon. Firstly, because who does? But also because they feel wronged. Their crimes were not so great. There is no reason for them to face certain death. As they plan their escape and try to break out from this prison they will face many challenges and meet more people along the way. Some will be friends and others will be woes. There is no way for them to know who is who. Trusting each other is the only option they seem to have, after all they are together in this ordeal. In the end mystery in unraveled and the truth comes out. However, for this group of teens things will never be the same.

Breakout was an intense ride that kept me on the edge of my seat. I found myself completely captured by this story and had to know what happened next. So this book refused to be put down and I needed to know that everyone I cared for survived. There were lots of twists and turns and while I tried my hardest to put the clues together, I was still left in the dark at times. I loved that this book challenged me. So if you're a fan of dystopian, then definitely give this book a try!

My legs beg for me to run, to find a way out, but all I’m trying to do right now is survive. Live one more day to figure out how to crack the system. Find a flaw they don’t even know exists to escape.

From that very first page, I was sucked in and terrified for Lezah. She found herself in a horrific prison, and she didn't know what she did to end up there. But there was a countdown for her death, and if she wanted to survive then she had to escape. The scenes that unfolded were so intense. I was literally scared to move or make any noise at all. I felt like I was trapped in that hell with her. And that was only the first chapter.

Something out there’s hunting us, and I don’t have the time to be quiet or think about where I’m going, I just have to go.

But escaping wasn't easy. The prisoners were not only monitored by a device they wore, but also by WALTERS. WALTERS were artificial intelligence that were self aware and could think on their own. They added another level of intensity and terror to the prison Lezah was in. So by the second chapter I jumped and gasped out loud from being scared and startled. And my claustrophobic self was dying in some of the situations Lezah found herself in. It just kept getting worse and worse and as the story progressed I could feel my heart pounding in my chest.

His aren’t just gray; they look like the clouds, with swirls of blue around the middle. That weird feeling in my stomach is back, and I’m warm, maybe a little hot even with the chill in the air. He’s so close. Closer than he’s ever been, and for a second I allow myself to forget about the past and look at the boy who was willing to risk everything for us today.

Lezah was so easy to connect with, even if her past was fuzzy and she wasn't able to give us a full picture of who she was. She was brave, smart, resourceful and she listened to her heart and brain, which I loved. We got introduced to other characters, but I'm keeping them a secret because this book is best going in blind in regards to them. Each one stood out brightly and it was interesting to see how they played into this puzzle. Just know that the love interest? Sigh. He was everything I love in a guy. And the tentative friendships she created with the others gave me the hope and lightness I needed in this story.

“They have to know by now that we’re all gone anyway.” And possibly they know exactly where we are, too.

So while this story was action packed, it was also filled with deception, friendship, lies, trust and love. Breakout was the perfect balance between a gripping storyline and emotional characters that pulled at my heart and grew as the story progressed. Looking back, I loved how Breakout was a maze of twists and turns the whole way through. Just when I thought safety was within reach, I had to think again, because everything would change in the blink of an eye.

“What is this place?”
He turns toward me and tilts his head. “Why do you ask questions you already know the answer to?”

This book ended at a fabulous stopping point. Lots of questions were answered and problems were solved. But there's still so much that can happen in this world, so of course I'm hoping for that next book. That way I can get a few more answers and be back with this group of characters that captured my heart. So if you're a fan of The Matrix or dystopian books that have sci-fi twists then definitely pick this one up. I'm so glad I did!

Breakout is a thrilling, action-packed ride that will keep your heart pumping and the pages-turning!

I really enjoyed this book! Per my above blurb, you can tell that I couldn't turn the pages fast enough and it definitely kept me guessing. I think A.M. Rose is immensely talented and I can't wait to see what other stories she brings to life in the future!

A.M. Rose's Breakout is part cyberpunk dystopia, part frantic prison break romp, and part science fiction. This is a story that features Lezah, or #22 of #49 in a maximum prison where she only has 6 days left before she becomes just another number in a much deeper conspiracy. Set in a tech-controlled prison where artificial intelligent roaming servants seem to be in control, it is a place they send people to die when they've done something horribly wrong. There are so many questions when you first pick up this book.

What exactly did Lezah do to end up here? What happened to a month's worth of memories that seem to have been erased? And, what happened to her family (mom, dad, and brother) while she's been in here? Lezah has been here for 3 months. Her roommate Clara (#61), the daughter of the man who built this prison, is days away from her day of meeting her sentence. But, things quickly move faster after Lezah steals a pin from a CMA that allows her to remove her bracelet as well as Clara who urges Lezah to join her in an escape attempt.

After picking up a girl who was supposed to be dead, Ruthie, the three end up connecting with a boy who Lezah once knew (Seph Jackson), her nemesis in numerous tech competitions which they have fought hard against each other, and his roommate Trip who decides to join them in escaping. Lezah and her gang navigate the relentless obstacles of the prison in an effort to escape where she uncovers more dark secrets than she could have ever imagined. After escaping, Lezah's group encounters a girl named Vaughn who is very familiar to her. Why?

If you want to compare this to the Maze Runner, so be it. There are secrets on top of secrets, but even after some questions are answered, there are plenty more that are left unopened which is why I settled for my rating. This is another one of those stories where something happens, entire swaths of the population end up dying, and corporations end up controlling all the resources and dictating what you can and can't do with your lives. They also apparently control all of the technology in this world. The story takes place in and around San Francisco which is apparently under water.

So, in closing. Did I like the story? Yes, I did. I would have liked to have more questions answered however. I want to know where Lezah's family is and whether or not they are still alive after all the time she spent in Ironport Detention Center. It is a cleverly written story with just a hint of romance that doesn't overwhelm the action that takes place throughout the book.

This is amazing! Oh how I've missed reading great dystopian books!

The plot and mystery was totally engaging, I couldn't remember feeling bored even just for a second! I loved the character and how they worked together. There's also a subtle romance and I think it's great that it's barely there, not stealing the spotlight from the story.

It's overall a good read! I'm recommending it to dystopian book lovers!

Unfortunately, I could not enjoy this book as much as I hoped to. The plot felt boring and redundant. The world building seemed familiar but not in a good way. The character were facsimiles of plain paper dolls. I was barely able to trudge through to the end. This book was not my cup of tea.

“But along with all my other possessions, my government issued SOUL is gone, too. And no one can live without their SOUL, without the device that’s their phone—computer—appearance alternator—money—you can’t buy anything, go anywhere, or even communicate with anyone. Not having it solidifies the fact that my time is running out.”*

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Just as the days until Lezah’s execution for a crime she can’t remember committing dwindle down, she forms an alliance with another inmate, and they plan to escape their horrific prison. Their group grows and so do the questions about the master plans of their captors. Lezah must use her wit and mojo with electronics to save herself, her friends, and maybe even the world.

Short chapters with tons of action and suspenseful endings make the novel a fast-paced and invigorating read. The government-issued SOULs are a great reminder of the way we expose ourselves though our electronic devices. They become our tether to the world, endlessly collecting information about us and our habits.
The science fiction world of the story is rich and interesting with WALking compuTERs aka WALTERs that are supposed to make decisions on their own, but are being controlled. The romance element adds a lightness that works well with the thriller aspect as the teens race against the clock. I love how Lezah seeks safety while unraveling the mystery of her past and the bizarre events unfolding around her.

Thanks to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for the opportunity to experience this book in advance of its release.

2.5 starts

I have mixed feelings about this book...
It took me a few chapters before really getting into the story. From that point forward, the intriguing, dystopian setting, with a Maze-Runner-taste, and the action-packed plot ensured I never get bored.

However, despite I pretty enjoyed it, the constant feeling that something was amiss continued to bother me. And with good reason:
- especially the second part of the book was quite predictable and with too much of a coincidence resulting far from believable;
- the worldbuilding seemed pretty interesting, but it was only sketched (I waited till the end for some explanations/answers that never came);
- the romance was rather dull, without any sparks.

All in all, good potential but, at times, rough execution.

This was honestly so good but I'm disappointed in the ending. Still, I enjoyed it enough that I didn't mind it too much which is why I'm giving it a 4 stars.

Now, I'm not one to compare books but this reminded me of Maze Runner. Despite Maze runner having more danger compared to this book, I felt like this one was more suspenseful.
The story is well written albeit it jumps to multiple concepts.

For the characters, I liked Lezah and Seph a lot. I don't know why I thought Seph was going to be those arrogant but sweet on the inside kind of guy. I actually liked that he wasn't like that. I liked that Lezah was smart and the leader of the group. For Trip, the book itself seems to hate him so why shouldn't I? 😂 And I liked Clara in the beginning but as the story progresses, there was less and less of her so I didn't care much for her in the end. Don't even make me start on Ruthie. There were many times where I forgot she existed.

For the ending, it bothers me a bit since there were many loose ends. Things were too convenient at times and the ending felt anticlimactic. There were many concepts the author could have touched upon more but it was just unresolved in the end. Nevertheless, the journey before the ending was entertaining and I loved it.

BREAKOUT is an awesome, Young Adult Sci-Fi story set in a dystopian world where technology controls, humanity is scarce, and fear dominates. The main character is Lezah, an inmate in a tech-controlled prison, who is scheduled to be executed but who truly wants to survive. In a world of technology, however, escape is risky, and she's going to need a little help from her friends.

From the very start, this book jumped into the action, and like Ms. Rose's debut, ROAD TO EUGENICA, it soon proved itself to be creative and smart, and unlike anything I've ever read before. Despite the action-filled plot, the character development didn't lack as we get to know Lezah and her friends, and the pacing was quick. I loved how the characters worked together, focusing on their strengths to work as a group. There's even a little splash of romance, which in my opinion helped soften the story emotionally.

BREAKOUT is a page-turner--the kind of book that you'll read in one sitting, because you won't be able to put it down! Although this part of Lezah's story ends and is satisfying for the reader, there is a bit of a tease of the next book, which I'm looking forward to reading. Entertaining, smart, and quick-paced, with BREAKOUT, Ms. Rose is proving herself as a new master of the young adult dystopian/sci-fi genre!

I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

The beginning was very intriguing, it was action packed from the very first page I was never bored and wanted to read the book in one sitting. However, the second half of the book was a bit predictable, romance was without chemistry and not all questions and motives were answered.... the characters and their behavior was a bit unrealistic sometimes.

3 stars for this book

First off, I was attracted to this cover. It looks menacing with that huge spider and the book blurb sounded mysterious so I was curious enough to request this book.

Lezah is in prison but she can't remember why she's in there. In this prison there are A.I. robots: WALTERs (WALKing compuTERs) that resemble humans and AIRS which are security guard robots. And everyone has a SOUL - it's a device that is a phone, computer, appearance alternator, and money. Hmmm...how does all that work?! 😮 Seriously an appearance alternator would benefit me daily. 😂 Well I can't say everyone has one, Lezah and the other kids in prison do not have a SOUL, it's taken away from them. All prisoners have a bracelet attached to their wrist that zaps them and basically it's a horrible place to be. With Lezah's execution coming up, she needs to breakout.

The story is told in first person through Lezah. There is a lot of action and it is non-stop. This whole book is full of tension and it is fast-paced. It's some parts creepy, but plenty parts exciting. It kept me guessing and left me with a few questions.

The world building is different and fascinating. It is set in a futuristic dystopian United States where climate change damaged coastlines and left them with fewer resources than before. A.I. is everywhere and the technology aspects were very detailed. So much detail that some of the explanations went over my head.
Lezah's meets different companions on her way out of this prison and they add to the story in different ways. For one, it's hard to know who to trust and everyone she encounters has a story tied to Lezah. There is a tiny bit of a romance, but nothing that takes over the story. Everything starts to piece together in the end but there are still loose ends to tie up by the time the story is over.

This was an interesting, fast-paced, young adult sci-fi novel with lots of twists and turns. I think sci-fi lovers would enjoy this better than I did but overall it was a fascinating story.

I enjoy a good 'jail-break' situation in stories, along with high-stakes heists, and this one promised to be full or action and danger from the blurb. I wasn't disappointed! I loved reading about Lezah and later Seph! The world-building in this story was complex and wonderfully thought out, which paired well with the complexity of the plot and characters! I loved the thrilling pace and twist this book takes, and quickly found myself flying though the pages!

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with the ARC. Thought this book was fast paced and great! Was exactly what I was expecting out of it

BREAKOUT is a thrilling and fast-paced YA sci-fi/dystopian. Lezah is in prison for a crime she cannot remember. This future prison is cruel where the guards are robots and the prisoners must wear bracelets that discipline them with shocks for any steps out of line (even just a movement to pick up something they dropped). When their counter runs out, it seems that they will be killed. Lezah’s bracelet is rapidly approaching zero.

When something unusual happens and Lezah is able to get a small needle, she begins formulating an escape plan. When her cellmate joins in, they begin on a difficult and rough journey to break out of the prison. With lots of twists and turns, this is a book that will keep you guessing. The plot starts off with a bang and it just keeps getting faster and faster along the way. While it is fast, the book is easy to follow, and the main characters will have you questioning who Lezah can really trust.

What I loved: The book is a major page-turner, difficult to put down and hard to guess what will happen next. Lezah and the other main characters were really interesting and great to follow. The journey took a lot of turns I did not expect, which is always exciting in a read. The futuristic sci-fi elements about technology and AI were really unique too, and they added something extra to this prison-break thriller.

What left me wanting more: The plot was almost too fast in places, and there is a lot about this futuristic world that I did not fully grasp. I would have liked a little more world-building and more flesh to the later parts of the book. There are still a lot of unanswered questions at the end, so I am hoping this will be part of a series where we can learn more about the world and the remaining mysteries. I think the book could easy have been double the length to fit in more information, and I still would have loved it, but I do know that skipping some of these details kept the plot particularly fast, which has its own appeal.

Final verdict: If you are looking for a fast-paced thriller with bits of romance and sci-fi/dystopian, look no further! Fans of THE MAZE RUNNER will particularly enjoy this exciting book! While I do wish the book was even longer with more world-building and answers, I am eagerly hoping for a sequel to enjoy these characters and futuristic world even more.

Please note that I received an ARC from the publisher through netgalley. All opinions are my own.

Talk about original! The story and concepts in this book are STILL giving me chills. A fascinating world built on a cautionary tale of where our own could be headed. Teens will live this book when it's added to our library collections.
