I found this book a struggle to get through. Maybe it was because it was part of a series and I hadn’t read the others .

I loved this fast paced historical drama set in the Black Country. Main character Ann has had a hard life living on the streets, when she meets the wealthy Richard Wyndham will her life improve or is she setting herself up for more heartbreak.
The class divide is a strong feature of the story with plenty of crime and romance which really keeps the plot flowing nicely.
I love books that feature strong women and will be looking out for more novels by Lindsey Hutchinson.

The Fallen Women by Lindsey Hutchinson has readers journeying to Wednesbury in England’s Black Country. Ann Felton has been on her own since she was thirteen. She lived on the streets, but she attended school each day until she turned fifteen. For the last three years, Ann has been working as a kitchen maid at Bell Inn, the local pub, where she also resides. Len and Gladys Pritchard own the public house, and they created a room called the snug where the local ladies of the evening can relax and enjoy a pint. Those women are Ann’s friends, and they look out for each other. One evening, Ann is out for a walk near the Theatre Royal when she sees Victoria Beckett having a temper tantrum. Ann suggests that her father give her a good spanking which Lord Richard Wyndham finds amusing, but it infuriates Victoria. This one incident is the spark that will ignite the flame that changes the lives of Richard, Victoria and Ann along with her friends. Then someone starts killing the local prostitutes and Ann is worried about her friends’ lives. Who is behind these vicious attacks?

I enjoyed reading The Fallen Women. I like the author’s writing style which drew me into the story. She created characters that I liked, and that I was rooting for them to succeed. There are other characters that are the type that readers love to dislike. Ann Felton has worked hard to stay off the streets and earn a respectful living. She wants to help her friends improve their lives and find a different way to earn their money. Ann is a hard worker with a realistic view of life and she has a large, loving heart. I like the strong and colorful female characters (except Victoria) in the book. There is mystery and suspense in The Fallen Women. I like how they add depth to the story and provide shocking twists along with revelations. One woman is bent on revenge and there is a Jack the Ripper type killer in their small city. I like the romance between the unlikely pair of Lord Richard Wyndham and Ann Felton. There is humor sprinkled throughout the story especially when the ladies get together for a pint. There are some historical inaccuracies in The Fallen Women, and I felt the book could have been shortened (just a wee bit too long). I am giving The Fallen Women 4 out of 5 stars (I liked it). The Fallen Women is a multi-faceted story where the author combined romance, strong women, friendships, humor, intrigue, hard work, and a mystery into one engaging story.

Ann was left an orphan and learned to live on the streets. She knew what it was to be hungry and cold. Now she works as a kitchen maid and has a small room of her own.
She feels bad for the women that have to sell themselves for food and shelter. She knows these women. They are all friends. These women look out for Ann. They are happy she is not on the streets.
When the prostitutes are getting killed, Ann is concerned for her friends. She comes up with a plan that she Hope's will keep them off the streets and help her establish her new sewing business.
Through the turmoil of a murderer on the loose, a jealous lady out to do her harm, she is able to find love.
A wonderful happily every after with a twist. Great characters and storyline.

Lindsey Hutchinson is fast establishing herself as the Queen of the gritty historical saga and in her latest novel, The Fallen Women, she has penned a harrowing, heart-wrenching and captivating tale that is sure to hold readers in thrall.

Life seems to be one constant struggle for Ann Felton. Since the death of her parents, Ann has found life to be challenging, unpleasant and fraught with danger, disappointment and sacrifice. Keeping the wolf from the door and a roof over her head gets harder with every passing day as the Black Country is no place for a girl on her own. Each day is grim and gruelling for Ann, but she is relieved when she manages to secure a job working at a public house. Ann knows that the work will be hard, but she hopes that this change in her fortune will provide her with some light at the end of a very long and dark tunnel. But does Ann know what she is letting herself in for? Or will she end up stranded down a path full of jeopardy and despair?

Working at The Bell brings Ann in close proximity with all kinds of people and she is soon taken under the wing of the local ladies of the night. While Ann does not think about how these brave women make their money or what they might need to do for cash, she is grateful for their support and friendship – especially as they always keep an eye out for her and will do anything to keep her safe. Through her work Ann crosses the path not just of the local prostitutes, but also of two people who are as far removed from her ordinary life as it is possible to get: Viscount Richard Wyndham and Victoria Beckett.

Unlike Ann, Richard and Victoria do not share her struggles or concerns, but when their destinies are unexpectedly interlinked, she ends up changing their lives forever, but will Ann manage to steer clear of danger? Or does a fate worse than death await her?

The Fallen Women is a terrific saga about courage, survival, redemption and triumphing over adversity that is packed with grit, pathos and heart. Lindsey Hutchinson knows how to tell a rattling good yarn and The Fallen Women’s beguiling blend of indomitable characters, heartfelt emotion and evocative period detail make this saga the perfect book to curl up with by the fire on a cold winter night.

Gutsy, engrossing and written straight from the heart, The Fallen Women is an outstanding Black Country saga readers of the genre are sure to lap up.

This is truly an unbelievable historical read. I could not put it down.
I totally adored Ann who is our main heroine. She goes from being on the streets to working a job she doesn't much enjoy nut she is off the streets, which is somewhere you do not want to be especially in the Black Country. Ann makes friends with the ladies of the night, who I have to say despite the job you cannot help but feel empathy for them. Lindsey writes in such a away that all the characters despite thinking you should maybe not like them you cannot help but like them. If you think Anna start in life was bad wait until you read what happens next. Her life is anything but boring with loads of twists and turns in the plot.
I can't get enough of Lindsey's writing style and will be hunting for more books by her.

This book was everything that I hoped it would be and more. Lindsey Hutchinson's writing submerged me in a historical world of romance and crime and I hung onto every word. The plot was fast-paced and exciting, I simply couldn't put it down, so much so that I devoured it all in one sitting.

Class structure was a prominent feature that graced the pages of this novel which helped to shape characters and explore the many difficulties that were faced. Whether this was working class daily struggles or a romance that transgressed the class system.

Victoria was a fantastic character who I loved to hate. From the outset her spoilt upper-class antics had me hooked. I must say I certainly wasn't expecting such a dark twist of fate for this character which added an extra layer of thrilling excitement to an already gripping plot.

Ann and Lord Wyndham were a well thought out pair. Their relationship rose above the struggles of classism into a strong and formidable bond and I thoroughly enjoyed watching their journey progress throughout the book.

The Fallen Women is a gripping historical story filled with love, boundless friendship and murder. It's fast-paced and will keep you on your toes with many unexpected twists and turns. It's certainly not a book to be missed.

I enjoyed this book. It’s about the life of Ann who at a young age is orphaned and struggles with life on the streets. Ann finds a job in the Bell Inn as a kitchen maid with a room but Len the landlord is very hands on so Ann leaves. Ann befriends a group of prostitutes and moves in with one of them Maisie. Ann try’s to start up a business dressmaking but while out one day she catches the attention of two people one is Lord Wyndham and the other a spoilt little rich girl Victoria who try’s to ruin Ann’s life. There are lots of ups and downs to go through before Ann can see if she will get her happy ending.

A heart warmimg tale which takes you back in time. A lovely story full of likeable characters that take hold of you and pull you into the story

The story of a rags to riches, from poverty to happiness and finding love is one that warms everyone's heart. At this time of the year it was also apt. That there are a couple of errors in the setting is neither here nor there.

Ann was left orphaned and left to fend for herself in a very harsh part of England. That she survived, and did not drift into prostitution is extremely commendable. Her friends and those who looked out for her were those same women and those who frequented a public house. Ann knew however that she needed to get out and improve her lot. Her talent was with design and in a simple way she started a business which was good.

She did not reckon with the jealousy and madness of one particular woman who would continue to make her life hell, thwart her at every point and even threaten her very life. The story set amongst a public house and the prostitutes who patronised the place and the working class life of the time was very descriptive.

Ann Felton has had to struggle to survive since both her parents died when she was very young
The town of Wednesbury in the English region the Black Country is a hostile place in Victorian times and Ann was glad of the shelter and food school gave her.

Sleeping in shop doorways and with nowhere to live for years, Ann is relieved when, aged 18, she gets works at The Bell public house, and is befriended by the local ladies of the night.

Ann is glad of their friendship, but ongoing poverty makes life a continual struggle.

On the flip side of life, Victoria Beckett and Viscount Richard Wyndham are two people for whom life bears no resemblance to Ann's. Both grew up with silver spoons firmly in their mouths, and neither can understand Ann's struggles.

Ann will change both their lives forever.

Fallen Women is a fast-moving historical novel and I was straight into it. The struggles of the time for Ann versus the opulent life of Victoria and Richard was a great way to show the contrast between classes.

As soon as we met Vctoria she seemed spoilt and unfriendly. Ann was strongwilled and stood up for herself.

Fallen Women is a historical novel that will make you feel and experience the life of many different people and it has a good level of detail with well-chosen words to describe things people and places.

Fallen Women is a book that will make you grateful for what you have and put your life into perspective.

Thanks to Linsdey Hutchinson and Aria for ARC in exchange for an honest and voluntary review and a blog tour slot. 4 stars

Ann Felton had a struggle to survive after the death of her parents. She eventually gets a job as a kitchen maid in the Bell Inn public house, a place where the local ladies of the night go to before they hang around the street corners. Ann makes friends with these ladies and they look out for each other. Wednesbury is poverty stricken, so life is a continual struggle. Fate leads her to meet Richard Wyndham and Victoria Beckett, who were born with silver spoons in their mouths. Ann and Richard quickly develop feelings for each other. Richard wants to help Ann in any way that he can. However, Victoria wants Richard for her husband and will sink to new depths to do everything in her power to get her man.

ALthough I did enjoy this book, I did that it could have been condensed a little bit. The woman are all strong characters, they need to be for the lives that they led. A love story where two opposites are attracted to each other, the obstacles in their way and a couple of murders thrown in just to mix things up. My only criticism of this book is that there is a few historical errors, but for me, it did not put me off the story. Overall, it is a decent enough read.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Aria and the author Lindsey Hutchinson for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this booked immensely. The story captivated me from the first chapter.. Recommended to those who want escapism and love a saga.

Pretty awful. Riddled with historical errors — just one example of many: a late Victorian streetwalker could NOT afford to rent a house with a spare bedroom! There was absolutely no sense of time or place and no understanding of period social or class norms; the romance was unbelievable; and the primary villain was so one-dimensional as to be ridiculous. To add insult to injury, the thing was soooo long! There were at least two too many plot threads, and they all seemed to drag on forever. Really, really NOT recommended!
