I read this book since I am in the retail business. The first part of the book is how the retail business is failing. The second half offers some solutions. Most of the information here is not new but I did find some of the solutions to be creative. Even though the author concentrates on businesses in the US and UK many of the solutions are world wide. Anyone in business will learn something from reading this book. If you are a shopper this book will also show you how choices will make a difference. Enjoy this insightful book

RETAIL THERAPY by Mark Pilkington explores changes in the retail industry in the UK (where he is based) and the US. As promised in the subtitle, Pilkington describes "why the retail industry is broken and what can be done to fix it." Understandably, many of his examples refer to Britain's high streets and retailers such as John Lewis or BHS. However, he does note the global impact and includes US-based operations such as Sears or Nike. I was also pleased to see that he includes Wegman's, an extremely well-managed grocery chain in the Northeast. Of course, Amazon's impact cannot be ignored, but Pilkington also discusses the role of investment like private equity groups and the spending habits of millennials (deferring home purchases, etc.). RETAIL THERAPY is a unique overview and I have purchased a copy in support of a student research effort.

Learned a lot with this book - thank you NetGalley for the ARC. So many reasons we shop the way we do, some more than others, but most habits can be acknowledged and changed when necessary.
