As a lifelong fan of Queen, I couldn't have been happier to be able to read this book. And what a read it was!

Not only I learned more in depth stories about this fascinating group of people, the pictures were amazing companion as well. Queen has always been my number one music group, since I was like 12 (I peaked early). And as a bookish child, I wasn't really into the rock 'n roll type of music, they somehow "spoke" to me. They captured the very essence of being different, odd even, and put it on a pedestal, turned into something to be celebrated and be proud of.

And nobody has done that at the time better than Freddie himself. The master of beautiful lyrics, gorgeous outfits and unbelievable vocal range.

This book is a stunning in depth study into a group that touched so many and is still relevant, celebrated and admired to this day.

5 out of 5 for any Queen fan.

Queen - Album by Album by Martin Popoff

The reason I requested to review this book was probably due to the new movie that came out about Freddy Mercury. I have always enjoyed the songs I have heard by him but have to admit that I had never heard of most of the songs in the albums discussed in this book. I know what songs I like but have never been able to tell you what the title is or who is singing it unless the group or artist is so big it would be impossible NOT to. I admit that I skimmed the book and picked and chose what I read of the interviews about each album and that the main attraction of the book were the photographs. I believe that people who love this group and know all of the songs and do not know the stories that go with them are those who will enjoy this book the most.

Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Voyageur Press for the ARC – This is my honest review.

I was recently given the opportunity to read and review these three music books. The books are essentially the same, with different artists as the topics. The books cover three bands, album by album. But when I say bands, I’m talking of the some of the biggest bands the music industry has known – Queen, Led Zeppelin and Iron Maiden. As I’ve read all three books, I’ll review them on one review post, as what I’ve got to say applies really to all of them!

I asked to request these books as I love music, and Queen is one of my favourite all time bands! I thought the idea of going through these artists discography track by track, album by album was really original and it really appealed to me. The author has also drafted in some more rock gods and influences to talk about their memories of each band - I particularly liked Dee Snider’s memories of the early Queen concerts! – so you weren’t just getting the author’s viewpoint but the opinions of people who knew them and played with them!

The covers of each book are fabulously eye-catching and really draw you to the books. The books are also packed full of band photos and visual memorabilia, which is enough to keep any die-hard fan happy for hours! I thoroughly enjoyed each and every book, and whilst I didn’t really know any of the Iron Maiden tracks and only some of the Led Zeppelin ones, I loved reading all about them! After I finished each book, I wanted to go and raid my husband’s CD collection just to hear what I’d been reading about!

These books would definitely make a worthy addition to any Queen, Led Zeppelin or Iron Maiden fan’s bookcase! Would highly recommend!

I love the music that Queen performed and was delighted to see this book. It's a wealth of graphics which is both a blessing and a curse. Blessing for reasons that some pics have not been seen in years. Curse because the book is a bear to load digitally making reading it very difficult. I use the Aldiko app and this is the first book that was impossible to finish much to my great disappointment. This would easily have a higher ranking were it not for that fact.
The author interviewed many people to gain insight as to how Queen's music impacted them or insider info about the group. Sir Paul McCartney is just one of many. Die-hard Queen fans may know much of the info but for most of us, it made for compelling reading.
I plan to request that my local library add this one to their collection.
I received an Advance Review Copy from netgalley. All opinions are my own.

I'm a huge fan of Queen. This book is a fascinating story of the rise of Queen with the albums. The illustrations were amazing. Queen has always been one of my favorite bands. It is different enough to fit into it's own category. Not a hair band, not hard rock. As I listen to Queen while writing this review, I can't say enough about this book. Absolutely loved it. The movie is introducing a whole new generation to this special band. I received this book from Net Galley and Quarto Publishing Group/Voyaguer Press for a honest review. The opinions are my own.

I’m not really a Queen fan, but I’ve watched “Bohemian Rhapsody” recently (and liked it!) and have also seen the Queen musical “We will rock you” (and liked that one as well!). There are really a lot of great song this band produced. And I vividly remember the early 90s, the beginning of my disco-going days, when “The show must go on” and “Living on my own” were constantly played by the DJ. And when he put “We will rock you” on, everybody was joining the clapping and stomping, that I now know (thanks to the movie) to be Queens own ‘invention’ because they wanted to make a song where the audience can have a part for themselves to perform.

So when I saw this book just a couple of days after watching the movie in the cinema, I was really curious what else I could learn about Queen.

But actually you don't learn so much about the band itself, about the 4 guys, about their history, their quarrels, about their private lives. This book really focusses only on the albums and on the songs, like it says in the title.

For every album the author lists the songs (including credits), writes a general text which puts the album in the correct timeframe of their success and then he interviews a couple of ppl who voice their opinion about the songs, what they like about the songs, what they (might?) mean and how they first came across this album/song/band. I didn't know any of those interview partners, so I had to google the names. (I only found out much later that they each get a small biographical introduction at the end of the book!) The only one I did know was Paul McCartney, and his comments were rather redundant: „I didn’t know Queen in the 70s, but then the son of my cousin made me listen to them. Yeah, Freddie was a great singer and a great songwriter. They were a great band. Bohemian Rhapsody is an all-time classic. And when I eventually met Freddie, he was smaller than I thought. He seemed taller in the pictures.”

The others do make meaningful comments, but it's a pity that the author couldn't get Brian May and/or Roger Taylor for an interview, or at least somebody else from the inner circle. Because in the end they are the only ones who can tell us what a song meant, why they composed/recorded/played it the way they did, or shared little anecdotes from their tours or recording sessions.

But I did learn that Queen was very experimental (which is also shown in the recent movie). They had a large variety of styles they all wanted to share with their fans, so they created songs in vaudeville style, with jazz elements, classical music, in the style of the 1920s and 1930s, rock songs, pop songs, folk songs. Brian May built his own guitar and 'invented' his own way of playing. So distinguished that the experts in the book claim they could recognize May after only one note.

The book also features a lot of photos from Queen performing on stage, or from press shootings. And of course every album cover is represented as well, sometimes even the covers of some single releases. But no 'private' photos from a jamming session or a party or any other event is in there. It sticks to the main purpose of this book: its about the songs, not the band.

For Queen fans this book is probably great. It totally holds up to its promise and delivers info on all their albums. It could have been even better and more insightful if this information would have come 'first hand' from people that really were there when these songs came to life.
People like me, who know only one song of their first three albums combined ("Killer Queen") and thus don't know what these 'experts' in the book are talking about half the time, should rather look for something more biographical, or just watch "Bohemian Rhapsody" again.

I went to watch Bohemian Rhapsody at the cinema this month, and then a couple of days later was invited to view Queen by Martin Popoff...talk about perfect timing! There was only so much information online that I could read easily about the history of one of the greatest bands of all time, and so I was very intrigued to see what this more analytical book would bring to the table.

This book takes a much more in depth look at all the Queen albums and has some really interesting contributors to the discussion. It was a book that I found very easy to engage with as it was well laid out and had lots of images to break up the text. I would definitely recommend it as essential reading for fans of Queen, and for people who want to learn more about the history of the music.

Martin Popoff creates an intriguing rock journey of interview and image. This book is high quality and is a must-read for fans of this landmark music group, appropriately timed with the release of the film Bohemian Rhapsody. Perfect for readers (and viewers and listeners) who want to know more.

In this new installment in Voyageur Press’s Album by Album series, rock journo Martin Popoff convenes a cast of 20 Queen experts and superfans to discuss all 15 of the band’s studio albums (including their soundtrack for the 1980 film Flash Gordon). Panelists include Queen experts, rock journalists, musicians, and record industry figures. The results are freewheeling discussions delving into the individual songs, the circumstances that surrounded the recording of each album, the band and contemporary rock contexts into which they were released, and more. beautifully designed book and engaging text are illustrated with rare live performance and candid offstage photography as well as scads of rare Queen ephemera.

As a big fan of Queen, I thought this book was well put together. I loved the pictures and the interview style of it! This is an excellent book for any fan of Queen and music lovers in general.

A in-depth look, album-by-album, of Queen's entire discography. Packed with photos of the band, memorabilia, and gig posters, this should be on every Queen fan's TBR. I really enjoyed the group interview style of the writing, and getting to read what famous musicians like Sir Paul McCartney and others had to say about Queen--well, it wasn't what I expected to find here, but I was delighted to read it just the same.

Note to the publisher: the first page of every chapter contains the album cover art but no words, and the next page continues mid-sentence. So I know I missed reading the first page of every chapter, but I'm confident the quality is the same as the other 95% of the book. Can't wait to read a final copy and see what I missed.

The only time I ever saw Queen in concert was post-Freddie Mercury with young Adam Lambert filling in. They still put on an amazing show. Here, we are presented with a coffee table colorfully illustrated book that offers a retrospective through the eyes of nineteen other music industry types discussing Queen's various albums and influences. Not as interesting as the other album by album formats, but still worth a read.

Having just seen the film “Bohemian Rhapsody” this week, I was delighted to be invited to be among the first to read and review this retrospective book on Queen’s 15 studio albums. The book is arranged where each album is discussed by a panel of experts on Queen and rock music of the era, and even includes Sir Paul McCartney. The interview style lends itself to the feeling that you are involved in a conversation with Queen experts, rock journalists, musicians, music industry people and superfans put together by author Martin Popoff. I loved the style and all the photographs and ticket stubs from concerts were so great to see. Having grown up on Queen, I could put myself back in time, where listening to the latest Queen album made for a great Saturday night.

This book is a great choice for any Queen fan, with all of the pictures and commentary of the music experts and fans. I want to go back and see the movie again now that I have read through this book. If you are a Queen fan, or simply a rock fan of the era, this one will be a hit. This book is such a great tribute to a groundbreaking band.

Thanks to #NetGalley, author Martin Popoff, and the publisher for an advance e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. 5 stars for this one!
