You may recognize artist Leanne Shapton’s work for her whimsical book covers and contributions to T Magazine, but she’s also a gifted storyteller. (If you missed her 2012 memoir-style book, Swimming Studies, we recommend picking it up.) With Guestbook, she uses a mix of words and imagery—watercolor paintings, found and staged photos with descriptive captions, and traditional short stories—to spin often-unsettling tales of bedside apparitions, imaginary friends, and other things that go bump in the night. It’s a one-of-a-kind collection that’s as creatively inspiring as it is chilling. (And, it goes without saying, a book that comes alive in physical form vs. on an e-reader.) —for Here Magazine
