Easy-to-follow advice and little things the reader can do to make small changes and slowly rebuild health/wellness while turning those changes into habits.
Target 100– The World’s Simplest Weight Loss Program in 6 Easy Steps by Liz Josefsberg is a great basic book for anyone who wants a diet program with easy to understand steps to feel better and lose weight.
As I did with the other wellness/diet books I have reviewed thus far this year, I will look for certain characteristics I think are needed in a good self-help book and rate accordingly.
What are the credentials/experience of the writer? Liz Josefsberg has her own website, so it was easy to find out what her background is-at least according to her!
Ms. Josefsberg states she was an overweight child and suffered teasing from her classmates. When she was older, she became an actress and her weight was under scrutiny to land good roles. When she gave up acting, she became the Weight Watchers (now just called WW: but don’t get me started on that!) Director of Brand Advocacy where she interviewed other WW members and learned how the program worked, or didn’t work, for them. She quit WW and became a private coach and consultant for celebrities including Jennifer Hudson, Jessica Simpson, and Charles Barkley. She states she is a N.A.S.M. Certified Personal Trainer and Nutrition Exercise Expert. She’s been on TV as a guest on guest shows and has written some weight loss articles for major magazines.
So, she is basically a celebrity coach with connections and some training but not a registered dietician, physician, or physical therapist. She states she learned about wellness by working with WW members and her clients.
What is the angle of the author? Does she have anything she wants to sell me? For this question, I would have to say no. She isn’t trying to get me as a client which is a good thing, because I doubt I could afford her. For the price of this book, the reader is getting the same advice she gives her clients although less personalized. I did feel when I read this book is the author is trying to spread her knowledge to the general public to help them lose weight in an easier way. I didn’t feel pressured to buy anything.
Is this book helpful to me? I found many of the ideas and strategies in this book were useful and I already put one of them to work in my diet. They are not hard and they are easy to do. It was a helpful book and a quick read.
As far as this book is set up: it is divided into what she calls her 6 Targets in the sections, or 6 Steps in the title, which is a little confusing. She begins the book with the story of her own weight loss journey, which helps her establish the ‘creds’ of someone who also suffered with being overweight.
The Basics section is the most important. She describes the importance of establishing habits and structuring your environment for success. If you only have time to read one section, read this one. It is very important and I agree with everything she says.
Each target has a goal with ‘100’ in the goal, hence the title of the program. These include goals like 100 minutes of exercise a week, or 100 grams of carbs per day.
The first two targets are called Food and Water-which deals with, you guessed it, food and water. She talks about the importance of breakfast (another breakfast champion-I don’t like breakfast though) and how water is necessary. The next two targets are Exercise and Movement, then Stress and Sleep to round up the six targets or steps. Easy to read and understand, all sound advice. There is a brief section of technology for our millennial friends and what the purpose of a network is. Recipes and a section about the author finish off this skinny book.
Would I recommend this book? Yes, I would. It is reasonable and although the author is not a ‘professional’ like an MD or an RD, she has sound ideas and isn’t trying to sell you something. This is a book anyone could do and use, not just her celebrity clients.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars for a #diet book. Thanks to NetGalley and BenBella Books for the chance to read the ARC.
This is an exceptional book about losing weight because the author delves into the science and practicalities of changing our habits. In my experience, this is crucial. The info about building healthy habits like drinking more water, adding more rest aNd sleep and so on, are made easier to do because she tells us how to change old habits into healthier ones based on current brain science.
Thanks to NetGalley, the author and publisher for an advanced reading copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I really enjoyed this book! Liz is really spot on with her plan. It is laid it so simply and is so easy to implement. It really is adaptable to anybody. There is no specific workout or meal plan that you need to adhere to but rather guidelines to lead you to a healthier lifestyle and weight loss.
I have read a number of diet/healthy living books and this one is among my favorites. It's emphasis and research on habits is very intriguing and makes this book much more unique than many that I have come across.
I am enjoying implementing new healthy habits in my life! Awesome book!!
