In all honesty, the book was not what I was expecting when I thought of a time-traveling narrative. I would be lying if I wasn't initially thinking about Samurai Jack before reading the graphic novel. It took a while for me to get invested but I'd say that it was worthwhile, the pacing is well done as there was a gradual build-up to the big reveal, and the cliff-hanger got me hooked onto this series. The artwork is minimal but I believe it doesn't detract from the overall story-telling. In conclusion, Chronin is a solid read, especially to those who appreciate historical fiction and/or science fiction.

An interesting time-travel concept, with a non-binary presenting main character. A young samurai in Edo turns out to be a time-traveling student from the future, who has been trapped in mid 19th century Japan. But what happens when they are confronted at a roadside in by another student who has also been stranded in the past?

I got a look at a sneak preview for Chronin, and I’m exceptionally curious to see how it ends. I’ll admit that it took me a little while to get into the series – probably about fifteen or so pages. But once I figured out what was going on, or at least once I started to…that’s when I started becoming really invested in what was happening here.
The writing for this series is perfect. It’s slightly understated, letting the characters speak for themselves more than thought bubbles or other texts on the side. I personally like that, especially with something that’s a bit more mysterious.
I’m not sure how I feel about the science fiction element that was thrown in (I’m being a bit vague here, for sake of spoilers). On the one hand, it’s been really well written, so I’m okay with it. On the other, I’d like to know why anybody thought it was a good idea to send students out like that.
I love how they carefully revealed a little bit at a time until suddenly the whole truth was being thrown in our faces. We don’t know all the facts yet, but I think I can make a decent guess at a lot of them. I’m still anxious to see how it’ll all end though.
Speaking of, this sneak peek ended at what was possibly the worst time ever. Okay, it was actually clever to cut it there, since I’m dying to find out what happens next, but now I have to wait and see! The horror, I know. But I really am quite curious, as well as really concerned about my favorite character.
