Olive Torres is a bad luck magnet... unlike her twin sister who wins every contest she has ever entered and seems to have her life completely figured out. So when said sister's perfect wedding reception gives everyone food poisoning... Olive finds her luck might finally be changing after all, when she gets to go in her sisters place on her all-inclusive Hawaii honeymoon.

Ethan Thomas is the brother of the groom and also avoided the wedding buffet from hell. With his own promised seat on the unusable honeymoon trip, there is no way that Ethan is letting Olive take this trip out from under him... even if they have to go together...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Unhoneymooners was a highly entertaining read that had me laughing out loud one moment and my heart clenching the next. Olive and Ethan's friction-fueled relationship had me hooked from the very beginning and kept me enthralled long after the book was over.
Olive embraces her pessimism and has come to terms with the fact that life is never going to go her way. But, with the opportunity for the (free) trip of a lifetime, she feels like maybe her luck is finally changing. Until she finds out that she has to share her trip with her nemesis, Ethan. Sure, he's nice to look at... but that's about where her acceptance of him ends...
Ethan has made no secret of his dislike for Olive. From their heated debates to their unconcealed disdain, this trip should be a fun one. But, something unbelievable happens when they decide to set aside their animosity and learn a little bit about each other... in and out of the bedroom...
I loved Olive and Ethan's adorable repartee filled relationship and the completely unconventional way that they come together. Olive was hilariously awkward at lying, which was a definite problem while she was pretending to be her sister on her honeymoon. I couldn't get enough of Olive and Ethan's brand of banter (ahem: foreplay) and I really enjoyed all the added quirks and substance to their personalities. There was also just enough drama to make the storyline interesting and engaging... without bringing the overall mood of the story too far down.
Funny, sexy and comprised of a fantastic plot and the always incredible writing of Christian Lauren, The Unhoneymooners is the next must read book you have been waiting for.
I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest and unbiased review.
Olive and her twin sister Ami could not be more different. Whereas Olive has had a lifelong streak of bad luck, Ami has won every contest she's ever entered from coloring competitions to a free wedding buffet and honeymoon for her upcoming nuptials. Olive loves her twin more than anything, but she's dreading spending the entire day with her enemy, Ethan, who just so happens to be the groom's brother and best man.
The wedding goes off without a hitch, that is until the reception when every person, except for Olive and Ethan, get horribly sick off the tainted free seafood buffet. With a free all-included Hawaiian honeymoon up for grabs, Olive and Ethan put their hatred of each other aside and agree to go together posing as the happily married couple. While the two are determined to spend the entire vacation avoiding one another, Olive's little white lie after a run in with her future boss threatens to change everything. The pair have to pretend to be loving newlyweds, but what happens when they stop pretending?
This was the first book I've read by Christina Lauren and I loved it. It was so charming and adorable, and I found myself smiling throughout the whole thing. Doesn't hurt that I do love me a hate-to-love trope, and this one was just too good to put down. I also really loved the writing style of this book. It was chock full of one liners and so many pop culture references (there was even a Clue reference!) and I was so here for it. My favorite part was all the banter between Olive and Ethan, especially their running bit of addressing one another by the wrong names. The two of them together were so fun to read and you could really feel the chemistry building between them.
I also liked the character development in this. Olive starts out a bit downtrodden, quick to blame everything on bad luck and a bit pessimistic, but by the end she really blossoms into her own. I also loved how she wasn't afraid to stick to her convictions when a certain drama goes down even though every person doubted her.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was full of cute moments, funny interactions, and a relatable main character. Does it have a few predictable moments? Yes, but that's the case for most in this genre, but I don't necessarily mind so much. I'll definitely be checking out more from Christina Lauren because I just couldn't put this one down.
Rating: 3.75
Cover
This cover is definitely not my favorite but I understand where the inspiration came from. They could have gotten away with having this cover match their other books like Josh and Hazel's Guide to Not Dating.
Plot
The plot is what really made me interested in picking up this book. Olive Torres and her arch nemesis end up going on a honeymoon together after her twin sister and his brother get ill and can't go. But Olive and Ethan absolutely hate each other and have done nothing but fight the three years they've known each other.
I really loved watching Olive and Ethan fall for each other on this vacation. It definitely helped that they knew each other for three years previously and it didn't read like insta-love, which is something I was worried about. Even throughout this honeymoon they gradually fall for each other through many many mishaps and running into people they never wanted to run into.
But, the only reason I didn't give this book a full five stars is because the last few chapters seemed unnecessary and were there just to create conflict for Olive and Ethan. It didn't add anything to the story other than a change in relationships in the epilogue. I thought it was a bit ridiculous to break up a couple after 10 days of marriage...Ami could've been left at the alter or discovered Dane's girls before the wedding. Either way, she would still have the honeymoon that needed to be taken and she could've been too distraught to do it.
I did laugh out loud many times while reading this book though, it was a lot of fun!
Characters
Olive Torres is a bi-racial (white and Mexican) woman in her early thirties who is always unlucky. But, while everyone at her sister's wedding got sick, she got lucky and was one of two people who didn't. I think the authors focused too much on how unlucky Olive has always been. The mishaps would've been funny even without the authors explaining she was unlucky every 50 pages.
She was also described as a curvy girl, but only because she went on a baking spree before the wedding -.- I don't understand why a girl can't just be curvy because that's the way she is. They tried making her proud about her body which I appreciated and her body was appreciated by others but why does she make excused as to why she's a bit thicker? It's unnecessary and it's what makes girls think curvy is bad. She also got compared to Selena Gomez as if the reader needed validation that yes, in fact Olive is really hot as if being curvy isn't.
Ethan is definitely my newest book boyfriend. He's such a tough guy on the outside but once you get to know him, he's really sweet and caring. I also liked that the authors made him vulnerable and we got to see his more sensitive side along side Olive but we also get to see him be adventurous.
I think Olive and Ethan are very cute as a couple and like that they got together. However, the last conflict of the book was really unnecessary and seemed out of the blue. It could have gone in a different direction and still have the same epilogue.
Absolutely delightful. I completely devoured this meet-cute story. I liked that a few serious moments crept in, too. Highly recommend for fans of Jasmine Gillory or Jessica Park.
5 stars! Absolutely pitch perfect breezy romantic comedy. The stakes are low and the conflict (especially with miscommunication and family loyalty) was enough to make it interesting but nothing to stress out about. Perfect for a Netflix movie.
I had a smile on my face while reading every page and laughed out loud many times (literally I didn’t realize why my face hurt but it was because I was smirking/smiling the whole time). Hero/heroine chemistry was spot on. The romance scenes were pretty tame, most happened off the page (🤷‍♀️) but what can you do.
This is a wonderful summer pick and can’t wait to book talk it to EVERYONE. If you are in need a fast read that can help you feel the feels to complete a stress cycle then look no further.
Thank you to Gallery Books & Netgalley for allowing me to read this in exchange for an honest review!
I was in the middle of three other book when I received this, but I immediately picked it up. I have not read a Christina Lauren book before, but I have heard great things. It's just like me to pick up an authors recently published novel instead of their first one. With that being said, I loved this one!
The synopsis sounded like something that was going to be a steamy, witty, hate to love romance novel. That's EXACTLY what Christina Lauren gave us. They nailed it. I fell in love with all the characters, and when you hate a character in this book you REALLY hate them. Dane is one of THOSE. He is probably one of my most hated fictional characters. He treats Ami like total garbage, and what he does to her is unacceptable.
Ethan and Olive are the absolute cutest couple. They have some ups and downs, but nothing that could make you stop cheering them on. I hated that Ethan believed Dane before he believed Olive, but I guess that was there to make the book more intriguing.
My only negative is that it dragged a little bit. It was one of those where unnecessary drama kept popping up so the story could continue. I wish that there was a little more detail at the end instead of adding the detail in the middle of the story where it didn't need it. Other than that I highly recommend picking this up when it comes out! It's very entertaining, and super fast. I could have finished this in two days, but life didn't allow that to happen.
I have been loving Christina Lauren's books ever since I finished Josh and Hazel last year, and was so excited to be able to pick this one up! I've been eyeing it longingly since the gorgeous cover and awesome synopsis came out, and was so excited to get the chance to review it!
This book is about Olive, whose twin sister, Ami, is about to get married. But during the wedding, a case of bad sea food makes pretty much every single person in the party incredibly sick. Everyone but Olive and Ami's husband's, Dane, brother, Ethan, who, spoiler alert: Olive absolutely hates. After feeling super bad about the fact that there's an all expanses paid honeymoon that she won't be able to go to, her sister tells Olive to go in her place. The catch? Dane also told Ethan to go in his place. So for the next few days, Ethan and Olive have to put their hatred aside to try and enjoy their free vacation. But as they spend time together, they start to realize that neither of them are really that bad of a company...
As soon as I started it, I knew I was going to love the main character, Olive. Her POV was a delight to read from the get go, and it did not change at all as the story progressed; I actually think my love for her intensified. Funnily enough, one of my favorite things about Romance books is not always the romance itself, but the main character's journey: I love watching them self discover and grow as the story progresses so much, and that was not at all different with Olive. I felt like she learnt who she was, where she wanted to go with her life, and it really inspired me.
Girls supporting girls is another thing that I just love to see in romance, and seeing that in this book just made me enjoy it even more. I loved that even after everything that went down with her sister and Ethan, she did not back up from what she believed in. She could've easily ignored what happened and moved on, but she cared more about her sister's well being than what other people thought of her, even the guy she was slowly falling in love with.
Which brings us into my next point: Ethan. For the most part, I liked him. He was sweet and nice, but he also frustrated me a lot, and some of the things he did and said by the last 30% of the story really disappointed me a bit, and made me, unfortunately, not absolutely love him like I wanted to.
The romance is another thing that I am mostly on the fence about. For the first 70%, it was absolutely amazing. Their banter was spot on, they had so much chemistry during their trip to Maui, and I was sure this was nothing but a 5 star read. But by the time they got back into the real world and the big revelations started to drop, I was so disappointed. By the end of the book, it didn't really feel like they really worked on their issues to me, and I felt like they needed a bigger talk. I didn't like how with a tiny grand gesture, Olive just pretty much forgave Ethan and moved on.
I want to point out though that I absolutely loved that this book included a latinx family! I always appreciate this representation. Her family overall was a big highlight for me; I could see my family in it so much. We are not as big as Olive's family was but I still attended big family gatherings growing up just like the ones described, and I am very close to a lot of my cousins too! It was refreshing to read about this and relate to it so much.
Aside from the few minor issues I had with this book, I overall enjoyed it and thought it was another solid one by Christina Lauren. Can't wait for more of whats in story from this duo!
I always know I'm going to enjoy a light and funny read when I crack open a Christina Lauren book. Romcom is my favorite genre to read solely because it takes me away from the stress of real life. I've learned that this author can deliver every time.
This is an enemies to lovers trope that took me by surprise with how they became enemies. I was baffled for the first half of the book by what truly caused Ethan to switch his emotions like he did. Once we learned the true reason, I wasn't expecting it. I liked the twist in the story even if it is a bit angsty, and I love when a typical trope can surprise me.
Due to Ethan's snub of Olive, I had a slow burn love for his character. I loved Olive immediately but you also get to know her better as the story progresses. When they are forced together on their siblings honeymoon, you really get to see more depth to both of their characters. They were fun when they were full of enemy snark and they were adorable when they become an actual couple.
They are flawed characters and I liked that about them. This also had some fun side characters. If you want something fun with a bit of angsty twist to the plot, I highly recommend The Unhoneymooners.
4.5/5 stars
Love, love, love this book! The Unhoneymooners is now one of my favorite Christina Lauren books, and also one of my top 5 romance novels. This book follows Olive Torres, the "unlucky" twin, and her nemesis, Ethan Thomas. Due to an unfortunate, case of food poisoning, Olive and Ethan must go on their sibling's honeymoon in their stead. As the tropical vacation begins, havoc and "bad luck" ensue, and Olive finds herself having dinner with her new boss, his wife, and Ethan, her pretend husband. Of course, over the progression of the book Ethan and Olive fall for each other, but it’s not without misunderstandings and bickering. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. There is so many shenanigans and chaos spirals that it’s hard not to enjoy. But also, what’s with romance novels and paintballing?
Ami & Dane have planned the perfect wedding because, Ami has managed to win everything, including a 2 week trip to Mauai! Olive, Ami's twin sister, is the unlucky one and, of course, she ends up maid of honor to Dane's best man =Ethan is her nemesis and, she is so not looking forward to spending time with him!!! Everything is going perfectly until everyone in the wedding party ends up with a horrible case of food poisoning. Everyone, that is, except for Olive and Ethan! Ami decides that Olive and Ethan MUST take their honeymoon trip so it won't go to waste. Seriously?
The back and forth between these two is priceless and, well worth the time it takes to read this highly entertaining story!
You definitely don't want to miss this one!
My Thoughts:
Christina and Lauren make a great author team. Like the dynamic duo, they really compliment one another. All of their books feel like they were written by one person because they flow so well. I have enjoyed numerous stories by these two, which make them one of my go to/auto buy author purchases. The many reasons that I love their books are that they write the most delicious romances, with some of the hottest love scenes, and best humor that I've ever read.
So, as you can imagine, the moment I saw The Unhoneymooners available for request, I was over the moon and beyond invested! I didn't even care what the story was about; if it was written by them; I was sure to like it! Well, as I began the story, the first 50% felt really slow.
This was a new experience for me. Initially I struggled with engaging with the story. I think a big reason for that was because I just wasn't liking the male lead. This was an enemies to lovers story told strictly through Olive's view point. After her sister and his brother get food poisoning on the day of the wedding, along with all of the wedding guests, Olive and Ethan end up taking their place on the honeymoon. These two can't stand each other, and Olive did an excellent job of convincing me of the fact that Ethan was rude, and quirky. However, eventually he grew on me when I ended up learning that misconceptions and wrong assumptions were contributed to her strong dislike for him.
The second half of the story was excellent, and I couldn't put the book down. I loved the books message, that we make our own luck in life, and it's important to take charge of your own destiny, and go after what you want. I loved the slow building romance. Christina Lauren "teases" us and ramps up the heat in bits and pieces. We get Olive in Ethan in their fair share of sexy and accidental compromising situations.
The authors were realistic in how they didn't give readers a case of instant love, but rather had attraction, like, and eventual love grow between Olive and Ethan little by little. The witty banter between them was engaging, entertaining and fun; as was all of the awkward situations that they often found themselves in. The authors flaunt Ethan and Olive's sexuality, and show us their need for one another. It takes a while for the characters to give in to their desires, so that by the time they do, you are cheering them on.
I loved the female leads family. The mom, aunts, and cousins were one of my favorite aspects of the story. They were warm, loving, in each other's business all of the time, protective, and always there for one another. Christina Lauren nailed the hispanic culture. Olive's family was hilarious! They had me smiling and laughing a ton. They reminded me of the movie, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding."
Last, but not least, I loved the female lead's growth. She went from having a pessimistic attitude and low self-esteem to becoming a strong, fierce, independent, and confident woman who took charge of her own life.
I ADORED this book. I absolutely love Ethan and Olive. They were both very well-developed, fleshed-out characters. Their relationship is one of my favorites that I've ever read about. It is healthy and so cute and adorable and I just loved it so much!
There's not much to say other than this was another hit for me from Christina Lauren. Generally their books have me laughing, smiling, and fanning myself or a combination of all three. Unhoneymooners tics off each one on this list, double the check marks for laughing. The silly scenarios, the "enemies" to lovers, the island setting. IT ALL WORKED FOR ME. Olive was funny and quirky and relatable. I loved Ethan's general intensity and his seemingly reserved demeanor. It was especially fun to see him lose himself in $2 mai tais. Can you blame him though? They are delicious. I'd definitely recommend this.
I smiled. I snort-laughed. I teared up a little. Like so many Christina Lauren books, The Unhoneymooners is like a hilarious post-date phone call from your BFF and, while she’s describing a litany of romantic flops and foibles, the whole time you’re just sitting there thinking… ‘yeah, she’s gonna marry this one’. So good.
In particular I felt a kinship with Olive. I don’t like admitting it but I am a total pessimist and have MANY times believed that I have been singled out by the universe for uniquely crappy luck. And, like, Olive, I’ve learned that this is a self-centered, fear-driven way to be in the world. It was lovely watching Olive’s journey.
And Olive and Ethan are very sexy together. I live for a good enemies to lovers story.
The Unhoneymooners is set to release in May. It’s everything palm trees and island breezes and fabulous banter. It will be a perfect pool-side read. Thank you Netgalley for the chance to read an advanced copy.
When I get my hands on a copy of a new CL book I immediately drop everything else and start it, no matter what! It’s rare for me to do this, so that should tell you something about how much I love their books. I’ve been working my way through their backlist and though I haven’t read them all (yet) I don’t think I’ve ever rated their books lower than a 4 either and this one gets all the love from me, it’s absolute perfection.
The enemies to lovers trope is one of my favorites, there’s something about the angry, angsty chemistry and buildup to the romance that always works well for me and this was a total love/hate tale. Olive was extremely likable right from the beginning and although I wasn’t sure what to make of Ethan initially I quickly found myself a new book boyfriend. He wasn’t quite Josh for me but he was damn close! There was plenty of witty banter between the two and several mishaps that had me cracking up, paradise isn’t perfect for these two but they’ll both be damned if they don’t have the best possible trip, it is free after all!
As you’re planning your summer vacation go ahead and plan on bringing this book along with, it’s an ideal beach read and if you’re not sipping a cocktail poolside while reading it, you’ll be wishing you were!
“No,” he says, “but it looks fun. How hard can it be?”
“That feels like a dangerous taunt to the universe, Ethan.”
My Thoughts:
Our story’s leading female is Olive; constantly unlucky at pretty much everything she’s already settled herself to the fact that things will never go her way.
Her identical twin sister Ami, has always had all the luck and everything together. Perfect job, perfect guy, perfect wedding...except until the entire wedding party gets a serious case of food poisoning, that is everyone except Olive and the best man Ethan. The groom’s brother and the aloof hottie she’s been secretly crushing on for the last couple years. Ami insists that her dream honeymoon in Maui doesn’t go to waste. Since the pair of them were lucky enough to escape the disastrous wedding buffet, they should go in their place.
Eventually Olive caves and the pair head out for Maui thinking they’ll just enjoy some separate time at the beach resort. But when things don’t quite go as planned they have to pretend to be something they’re not, which might just open doors neither were going to open.
This book was so much fun! Our lovely authors do such a refreshing job of making characters that are so relatable we can see ourselves, our friends, our families in them. The situations are ones we have all been through or know someone who’s experienced the things our characters go through.
The writing is witty, and charming. I found myself smiling and chuckling to myself often. Olive is such a strong character. She is flawed but oh so beautifully human.
Ethan was a bit stiffer of a character but he was still that guy we all remember from school. The hot, kinda jock, super charming when he wanted to be, but a bit of a d**k too that you liked despite your best efforts. You know who I’m talking about, don’t pretend you don't.
Best of all I loved Olive’s family. She has one of the best support systems ever. Even though it was a large family, everyone was there for everyone. To see how tight-knit everyone was was heartwarming.
If I had to nitpick about one thing it was that some of the complications that arise come to head or are solved a bit to easily or conveniently. Outside of that it was still a treat to read and I cannot wait to pick up a copy for my shelves when it releases. Easily on my top reads list of the year.
A fun, upbeat contemporary romance. I am a fan of the enemies to lovers trope and this is a good addition to the canon. Olive and Ethan are definitely the most developed characters in the book, although I do wish we could have gotten to know Ethan a bit better as well as Ami and other members of Olive's family. Olive is a very likeable heroine, and I appreciated her honesty and self-reflective moments in the text.. The scenes with Olive's family were humorous and heart-warming. The conflicts were relatable, and I appreciated that the characters did not compromise their values for the sake of romance. The romantic development was well done and fun to read - I was definitely rooting for the two to work it out! This will be sure to appeal to readers of romance and chick lit, and I would consider suggesting The Unhoneymooners to patrons looking for a fun spring/summer read.
“That’s the point of luck: it happens when and where it happens.”
This is my favorite Christina Lauren book since Roomies! I’ll be honest, I wasn’t too in love with Josh and Hazel's Guide to Not Dating or My Favorite Half-Night Stand, but this felt like the famous duo was back and resecured that special place in my swoon-worthy romance heart. This was so funny, this was so heartwarming, and since I’m leaving in a few weeks for Hawaii, the setting was pretty perfect for me, too! This is a hate to love, enemies to lovers, fake dating romance that features two characters who are forced to be around each other because their siblings are marrying each other.
➽ Olive Torres - Biracial (white and Mexican), twin of the bride, has been unlucky her entire life.
➽ Ethan Thomas - Brother of the groom, and Olive’s archnemesis.
“I want to say something sassy, but the only coherent thought that comes to mind is how insulting it is that eyelashes like his were wasted on Satan’s Errand Boy, so I just give a perfunctory nod and turn down the hall.”
And these two had a very rocky, and very confusing, first meeting. But they are trying their best to put their differences aside for this wedding, even if they are antagonizing each other every single chance they get. But the wedding takes an unexpected turn when everyone gets sick from the seafood buffet that was served, except for Olive and Ethan, since neither of them ate from it.
Their siblings insist that they take their Hawaii honeymoon, instead of letting the trip go to waste! And they both decide to, because once they get to Maui, they won’t have to see each other except for sleeping. That is, until Olive's boss and Ethan’s ex fiancé happen to be at the same resort, and they are forced to play the part of happy newlyweds, because Olive doesn’t want to get caught using their sibling’s honeymoon by the resort and be forced to pay for it out of their own pocket, and Ethan doesn’t want his ex to see him single. And honestly? It was just the perfect fake dating setup, let’s be real.
“The problem with lying about relationships is that humans are fickle, fickle creatures.”
And I truly believe the banter in this book is the best that these authors have ever crafted. It’s smart, witty, and truly hilarious. I also just loved Olive and Ethan as characters so much, and I easily shipped them together; maybe harder than any Christina Lauren characters. The setting was perfect, the plot was genius, and this was just an overall really easy book to escape into and love.
But I am very curious to see how plus-sized reviewers are going to feel about the representation in this book. This is not my lane, so please know that while reading this paragraph, but this book puts a huge emphasis on how Olive thinks Ethan fat-shamed and body-shamed her. She constantly talks about her body, her curves, her stress baking and eating, and how things look on her body, and even tears clothing that’s too small for her, while always kind of comparing herself to her thin twin sister. Like, I was 100% sure Olive was plus-sized through the entire start of this book, but then, once they arrive in Hawaii, it seems like the only big and curvy thing about her is her breasts, which are obviously perfect! And then, at the end of this book it starts feeling like she and her thin sister are identical in bodies, too, and she also gets compared to Selena Gomez. Like, I just didn’t understand. It was like they wanted to have a plus-sized main character, but they didn’t want to actually go there or hire any beta readers. Like, again, this isn’t my lane, and I’m obviously not saying that thin people can’t have body dysmorphia or just have unhealthy relationships with food and their bodies, but the way this read personally felt bad to me. I just honestly think this book could be really triggering because of the emphasis it has on Oliva’s relationship with food and her inner monologue about her thoughts about her body, while also painting a very hazy picture of her actual body.
Also, there is a very small conversation between Olive’s family members questioning if a family member is queer, and… it was really badly done. "Because lesbians use those strap-on things" and apparently have short haircuts. And I completely understand it was supposed to be funny because older generations “don’t get it” or whatever, but it wasn’t cute; it was offensive and poorly done. And the mom saying she wishes she was born a lesbian, like… gag me with any spoon you can find. Like, it was so minuscule, and I have no idea why it was even part of the book or why editors thought it was a good thing to keep included, but it just made me side eye and put a bad taste in my mouth.
Okay, I know those last two paragraphs seem bad, and they are, I’m not making light of them whatsoever! But I will say that if you took those two elements out, this is a really good book. Like, the best I’ve read from Christina Lauren in years. It was laugh out loud funny, it was romantic and swoon worthy, and I really shipped this enemies to lovers dynamic. I never wanted to leave Olive, Ethan, or Hawaii, and I think this is just going to be the ultimate beach read of 2019.
Guys! I loved this book! I definitely recommend it to any and all - fans of romantic comedies, comedies, romance or even just for someone looking for a fun, escapist read. This one is sure to be a smashing success in 2019!
Olive has bad luck. She kind of centers her life around it. Her twin sister, Amy, has great luck. She even enters enough contests that she gets her entire wedding and honeymoon for free! But, the tables turn and Amy gives Olive her free honeymoon. The only catch is that Olive has to go along with her nemesis (her new brother-in-law's older brother, Ethan) and they have to pretend to be newlyweds. Cue the amazing situational comedy and romance that is The Unhoneymooners.
This book was simply a happy read. There is character development. There is a bit of romance. There is an awesome summer setting (Maui!!). It was a great read and I easily give it 5 stars! Give it a read and let me know your thoughts when you finish!
I expected this book to be a fun filled enemies to lovers story, and it completely met my expectations. This was a blast to read. I love the way Christina Lauren writes their stories, and this one had me smiling from ear to ear.
Olive Torres is an identical twin. Although they look just alike, her sister Ami is her opposite in so many ways. Ami is the lucky one. And Olive, well she has no luck at all.
Whereas Ami is a four-leaf clover, I have always been unlucky.
Ami is getting married and being the overachiever that she is, she’s devised a plan (along with a lot of luck) to get her wedding paid for. And it works out for her. So here is Olive, in a hideous bridesmaid dress having to tolerate her sworn enemy, the grooms brother, Ethan. It’s not her best day. But maybe her luck is beginning to change… I mean, her allergy to shellfish saves her from the serious food poising almost every person at the wedding gets.
Ami is so ill she can’t go on her own honeymoon. And since it’s a non-refundable free trip, she insists Olive pretends to be her and goes in her place. Ethan, who also missed the food poising due to his aversion to buffets is invited to go as well. So here Olive is. With Ethan. On an romantic, exclusive get away. You can tell where this is going, right? Yes. And it’s going to be so much fun!
I loved watching Ethan and Olive together. They seriously cracked me up. Olive is an endearing main character. Her luck was awful, but maybe at the end she really did end up being the lucky one. And Ethan. Ethan is hilarious, sweet, and completely misunderstood. Olive realizes that soon enough.
I find myself smiling in the direction of the living room, and realize that staying firmly on Team I Hate Ethan Thomas is going to be more work than it may be worth.
Where this was a fun rom-com, there were also a lot of obstacles this couple faced. It wasn’t all laughs and smiles. There was a bit of drama, a bit of angst, but overall it was hilarious, sweet, had the best banter, and I adored it! For all my friends that love a good enemies to lovers story and a book that will make you laugh out loud, pick this one up!!
