There is much to gain from this book if you’re feeling powerless about your weight, or powerless about your ability to make change! I highlighted many, many passages to revisit. The overall message is to bring yourself more love, especially when food has become your go-to comfort. It’s a simple concept and I can see how it can work having made some progress with it already.

My thanks to NetGalley, the author Susan Hyatt and publisher BenBella Books for granting me a digital copy in exchange for my honest opinions.

There was much to enjoy here, but I found I couldn't connect with it. I'd read more from this author in the future though.

DNF

I started reading this and got through 10 -20% of the book and it was ok, I just wasn’t feeling a self help book about weight loss. It has been a while since I downloaded the arc and I have no interest in continuing the book.

I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. I did not connect with this book but I can see how some would.

BARE
by Susan Hyatt

Master Certified Life and Business Coach Susan Hyatt has developed and trademarked her seven week process called BARE to show her clients how to lose weight, have deeper sleep and more energy, pursue their goals and dreams, and enjoy a better quality of life on every level. Devotees can join her online community and are encouraged to create their own BARE chapters and book clubs.
All sound advice, yet nothing you haven’t read from dozens other self-help books. A different name for the method or philosophy, perhaps, and pages of slightly reworded repetition; it gives the feeling there is a small stable of ghostwriters who make big bank just reworking the title and name of the method. There are publishers who do the same with business books, though one wonders if this group broke away after finding the foolproof formula for their own financial freedom.
BARE held out so much hope. The instruction to eat with attentiveness instead of focusing on dieting is certainly a healthier approach. Cleaning up one’s environment and decluttering the closet also support a feeling of more control over one’s self and habits.
Show Up and Be Seen is the lesson of Week 7. The lessons here are strong and valuable and sadly some of the most complicated for some women to make a part of their every day. This could easily be the first chapter and incentive for goal setting.

This book was amazing. I started it last year and then had a baby and just kind of forgot about it. I picked it back up this week and finished it. Thank you Susan, for being so real and true to your experiences and sharing different ways of how to love yourself and set yourself up for success. I like that the book is broken into weeks, now that I've gone through the book, I'm going to go back to the beginning and go through it week by week as outlined in the book and make every effort to stick with it, because I deserve to love myself 🥰

I liked the writing style. Fun and upbeat. Motivating. Not life changing or anything, but I'd recommend

Great transformative book, not what I would normally read but it came up as a suggestion at the right time.

I didn't want to wait until I finished the title before I reviewed it. I love this title. I'm working through it at my pace, which means I read a chapter and practice until I feel ready to read the next one. It makes more sense than anything I've read so far. I'm still on the mindful eating portion, but it's working. I'm leaving something nearly every meal, my cravings have been minimized and as a big picture, I'm loving a more orderly life. I'll be purchasing a personal copy to keep it fresh on my mind. I can't wait to see what else I learn before I'm done!

This book presents the BARE program, divided in 7 parts or weeks.

The author does not believe in drastic diets but in intuitive and mindful eating, putting self-care and self-esteem first.

The main points of this program are presented via the author’s own experience and via her clients’ anecdotes.

While I enjoyed the style of the writing and personally agreed with most of the techniques, the notions were not new to me,having read several self-help and mindfulness books. I was probably expecting innovative ideas and points of view.

Susan Hyatt is a self-help expert, and gives advice that isn't revolutionary, but is helpful, practical, and encouraging. Recommended for collections with a strong demand for help-help and motivational non-fiction.

I was slightly disappointed in this book. While, it has some good points and I enjoyed reading about the authors life I felt that the information presented for the 7 week program has been gone over in many self help books. However, I did like the way the author presented it and think it could be helpful to others.

I would like to thank Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy free of charge. This is my honest and unbiased opinion of it.

Bare appears to be a typical self help book, until you dive into it. It is broken into 7 segments, plus an into chapter, that will take you the course of 7 weeks to complete. Each week focuses on something new (I.e. first week focuses on cleaning up both your physical and emotional environment). In collaboration the book is supposed to help you live your best life. Jury is still out on whether this will get me to that point, but I love the format of this book, working on something new each week. Going to give it a shot and I hope you do too!

Bare is a insightful book about losing weight, self esteem, and much more. There are some exercises and personal experience stories. Well written and we'll researched.

Let me premise that I've always been one to be against self-help books (sorry, not sure why I am so against them), but decided to pick this one up. I absolutely loved it and found it very helpful and insightful. This book will help you love yourself and overcome any hangups you may have about yourself.

A good reading
I thought it was going to be a self-care book and a guide to loss weight and it's a lot more, it's a journey through the writer's story, one you can take with her. It's NOT a diet book, it's about listen and understand your body and its needs, always with common sense. Think healthy, LOVE YOURSELF, eat healthy and you can enjoy life (plus, you'll lose weight and never see it again). Of course there are some exercises and tips, but it's mostly about a change of mind that will change your body as well.

Susan Hyatt is a Life Coach. She has a website promoting her services, one of which is the Bare 7-week telecourse. It costs nearly $3000. Susan (justifiably) doesn’t like the dieting industry and the way they make money out of women’s desperation to lose weight. She has been accused of making money out of the same cohort…
Reservations aside, this is a likeable book with a positive message and a manageable step- by-step approach with assignments to complete. My favourite chapter is ‘Show up and be seen’ – a real reminder to grasp life with both hands – today.
There’s nothing really ground-breaking here – much of it is a repackaging of the kind of advice you might give your teenage daughter – but if you’re feeling unhappy with your body and your life, you could do worse than follow this plan. You might even enjoy it. It might even save you $3000.

Content: The book talks about the 7 week BARE process by Susan Hyatt. Instead of believing in meal plans and a structured (read restrictive) diet, Hyatt believes in mindful eating and taking care of your environment. The approach is definitely not new but presented well by Hyatt.

Writing: The book reads well and doesn't lag anywhere. The writing is conversational and easy to go through.

Miscellaneous: I believe that mindset is very important in weight loss success but I also know that it's important to understand some basics of weight loss process, things like muscle building, whole grains, transfats and cardiac health. This info would have been a nice addition to the book.

I received a free copy of the book from Netgalley. It doesn't influence my opinion in any way.

This book was received as an ARC from BenBella Books in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

I have read a lot of inspiring novels and weight loss, better you books in my career but this one I feel is extra personal because of Susan incorporating her personal experiences and struggles that made me feel as the reader not alone and part of a conversation as if we were meeting for lunch or coffee. I also loved the tips she had in the novel of real life situations such as social media and how to avoid toxic posts, tv shows and people in your life and I know from experience that can definitely lead to downfall. Susan was very encouraging and sincere when writing this book and sometimes that is what readers need when embarking this journey.

We will consider adding this title to our Non-Fiction section at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.

I thought this book had a lot of sincere, encouraging advice that is not at all degrading to women who are overweight or want to lose weight. The writing style was very accessible, and I took away a lot of wisdom from the book. However, I am not sure how well her method would work for someone who truly struggles from a genetic standpoint. Will her method be enough? Her weight gain resulted from a terrible personal trauma, and it does not seem like she was genetically predisposed to weight gain before that. For anyone who eats because of emotional trauma or in the place of love and comfort, this book would be very helpful. Honestly, I think everyone eats for comfort sometimes, and this book can give some perspective on that. Saying that Weight Watchers does not work at all is denying that it does work, and I have personally seen it work for many people who have struggled with weight their entire lives. Of course, Weight Watchers is not fun. If I had a choice, I would much rather lose weight the way this author is suggesting. Seeing how thin she actually is, though, it makes me feel like she probably cannot truly relate to someone who has never been at an ideal weight, even in childhood. I believe a lot of her ideas would work though. I also believe you'll be a lot happier with your life in general if you take her advice. This is not a weight loss book that will make you feel bad, which is awesome. When I looked at her personal website, I did not find it nearly as approachable as I found her in the book. It seemed very (thin) image-driven and money-driven.
