This one just wasn’t for me. Usually I enjoy Tilly Tennant’s books but this one missed the mark. Main character Lizzie was very annoying, her sister Gracie was even worse and their mother Gwendolyn takes the cake for most annoying character in this boo.k. Constantly complaining. Lizzie strikes up a relationship with Jude who seemingly is still in love with the mother of his child Harriet. We never really get any closure on that. Harriet remains lurking in the shadows. The whole thing makes no sense. The best things about this book were Derek and his wife, Charlie, and in some ways Florentina. But overall the characters seemed underdeveloped and the plot went in too many directions. We barely hear anything about the brother James then bam, a strange plot that the reader can’t reakky care about because what do we really know about this character? Nothing. To me the “romance” here just seemed dirty and creepy, like Jude was somehow fooling Lizzie. Then there was Gracie and her selfishness, Gwendolyn complaining about Florentina but then they are bffs by the end of the book, etc. I think if some of the plots here had been explored more maybe in a series rather than one book it could have worked better. As it stands the author tried to cram too much junk into a small book and just made an overflowing mess. |
This is another wonderful book from Ms. Tennant. I loved the storylines that wove together. I felt like I was friends with all the characters. I highly recommend this and any of her other books. |
I like Tilly Tennant books and I liked this was. It was fascinating and entertaining, the perfect feel good book for a cosy afternoon. I love the plot that kept me hooked till the last page and the cast of characters. The setting was lovely and it made me wish I was there. Highly recommended! The story begins with the death of Lizzy's dad, and in his memory she buys an old abandoned mill that he always loved in his home town. Soon after moving there, she meets hunky Jude and his brother things become more interesting. Then her pregnant sister arrives without the father, her stepmother moves in after her house blows up, and Jude's ex-girlfriend is always around. A good book that was hard to put down. Highly recommend this book and author. |
Another fantastic book from Tilly. I love when books appear from my favourite authors. Great setting and characters. A lovely feel good romance perfect for poolside reading |
I am a big fan of Tilly Tennant so I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book, and it didn't disappoint! This is the ultimate feel good romance book. It's all about a woman who is determined to restore the windmill after her father's death. Throughout the book you are treated to the blossoming romance between Lizzie and Jude. Perfect read for the summer days! |

What a great story, I got really involved in the rebuilding of the windmill and the family dynamics. The description of the countryside around the windmill was so realistic I could picture the hedgerows and smell the wild flowers When Lizzies dad dies she remembers the outings she had with him and how they would pass the old derelict windmill on Magnolia Lane. The windmill was very special,to,her dad and that's why Lizzie decides to buy it and renovate it. She is constantly juggling her finances to get it back into full working order - will the money run out before she can complete the rebuild. She is one of three children, her brother and sister both live and work in London. When her sisters relationship breaks down she moves into the caravan with Lizzie, which is a bit of a struggle at first because the sisters have never had an easy relationship. Their mother is still hurt that her husband divorced her and married someone else plus one of the sisters sees her as the wicked stepmother. Lizzie becomes fond of Jude who lives with his brother, Charlie. I loved the way Charlie was portrayed and how involved in his life the sisters became. But There are factors in Jude's life that make a relationship with Lizzie very difficult and she has to decide whether she can accept these difficulties and move the relationship forward. A definite holiday read.. |
Sweet ~ Quick ~ Atmospheric tl: dr: A woman finds love and surprises in the aftermath of her father's death. Lizzie's father dies. She is the daughter of his first wife. There is baggage there, as expected. To add insult to injury, Lizzie's had her own sorts of self-doubt before her father's untimely demise. She makes a huge life-change deciding to renovate a gorgeous, derelict mill. This gentle book is really about a woman renovating herself as she works on the building (sort of in the vein of A Year in Provence or Under the Tuscan Sun). Like those other books, this one does a great job of transporting readers to a magical space. Lizzie does get a happy ending as well. Great vacation read for someone who is looking for good writing and love. 3.5 Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. |
