I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The pictures in this book are beautiful. The lullaby is perfect. |
The most gorgeously illustrated storybook which comes with its own beautiful lullaby song from the author. This will become a firm favourite for parents and kids alike. Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me read an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. |

This book started out as a lullaby written by the author for her newborn child. The lullaby is beautiful. The art work of the book is beautiful. However as a story, I don’t think it works. The natural inclination in books is to have stanzas that rhyme, or a simple story. This tries to combine the two and it falls flat. I would much rather listen to the song than read the book. |

I loved the illustrations in this book. They are beautiful and soothing. I didn't quite understand the story. I realize it was supposed to be the baby bunny's dream, but I couldn't figure out what the message the author was trying to get across. |

Kid 2 is a bunny fan, so I knew I had to read it. I love the watercolor illustrations and I was intrigued by the idea of accompanying music. Since I'm terrible at bedtime stories (I amp up the kids instead of calming them down) I thought this might be a nice solution. What I liked Illustrations: They are soooo lovely. I love watercolors and these illustrations are right up my ally. They get an A+ from me. Kid 2 is also a huge fan and will quietly tell me about the illustrations as we listen to the song in bed. Music: This is less a picture book with music as it is an illustrated song - and it is a lovely illustrated song. It reminds me a lot of music played at a spa, minus the irritating water noises. Aversa's composition is very soothing and relaxing. Kid 1 has always liked to fall asleep to music, and this is exactly the type he likes. I added it to his playlist and he's enjoyed it. Kid 2 is the opposite, she hates bed time music but loves the combination of the book and song. We have walked past her door at night and heard her humming "Your Light" to herself. It's super cute. Great for bed time: My ideal picture book is loud and funny and possibly someone gets eaten. Your Light is the exact opposite of that, and that's not a bad thing. (This is also why my husband has to repeatedly remind us that it's calm down time when I'm reading bed time stories.) It has been my daughter's first choice for many, many nights. My husband's cousin is expecting her first baby and I know this is a book she would enjoy. So while this book isn't as exuberant as I typically like, I think it will be a good fit for many. And let's be honest, it's a great ease-your-child-to-sleep book and song. What I'm on the fence about This is a song turned into a book and it has the typical weaknesses: Over the years I've tried to read books that are really just illustrated lyrics. While they might be great for classroom activities and units, most times they just don't work as read alouds. While the lyrics might have a good message, part of what makes it a popular song is missing when it's simply read. It is always better to play the song, look at the pictures, and read along get the full experience. This book is ok on it's own, but much better with Aversa's original song. Very sentimental and sweet: Your Light is based on a song written by a new mother for her daughter. It can come across as a bit saccharine, but parents get that way with babies. It doesn't matter if it's your first or your fifth, you still have all these hopes and dreams for your child. However, it is less cheesy when the song tells the story. Rating: 4 This book is a perfect lullaby book - soothing colors, dreamy illustrations, and soft song that eases you into sleep. I believe it's better listened to than read aloud as the illustrations really fit the original song. Your Light would be a great gift for new parents: a pretty book and a lovely bedtime song that reflects a bit of their dreams and love for their child. Bonus for when the child is old enough to really enjoy story time: snuggle up, play the song, close your eyes, and remember to turn the pages at the right time because parents have got to sneak in some rest whenever they can. I did this last night. We are all struggling with a rough cold and I just arrowed through the NetGalley copy while the song played. So happy not to have to talk and rest my eyes with bonus snuggles. It was great. |
This charming book is an ideal bedtime story for a little one and a perfect gift to give on a special occasion or for a baby shower. The unique thing about this book is that it is accompanied by a lullaby. The song is a free download available at :www.YourLightBook.com. Mommy Bunny lovingly tucks in her baby and softly encourages him to travel afar to Dreamland and procure a falling star. She suggests that he entrap his special glowing star inside a glass jar and bring it back home. She tenderly whispers... "And anywhere you are- no matter near or far- I'll love you the same. I'll love you the same." Then she seals that promise to her little bunny with a Mommy kiss. The book and the song together express a powerful heartwarming message. They celebrate the magnetic bonding between a parent and their cherished child. The lullaby is tender and sweet. The cradlesong flows into the baby's heart and brings feelings of calm, comfort and especially love. The dreamy, beautiful watercolour imagery enrich the text. They give the words a magical effect that draws the wee reader into the story. This talented award-winning artist has created a love song for the soul and a forever book to be cherished. Highly recommended. |
Everything about this book is beautiful. The illustrations and the words are both beautiful. I recommend it and suggest it as a tradition for nighttime listening with the special music that goes along with it. It is a wonderful idea and little ones can enjoy at a young age then as they grow they can continue to enjoy it. Sweet story and idea -- love it! |
I read this book first without having listened to the song, and I think it's fine that way as a bedtime book. But, it's much better with the song! The song is available on the author's website, and there's a youtube video. It's a lovely, soothing song, with a tune that's easy to learn, so you don't have to have it playing to sing it at bedtime. And can we talk about the gorgeous illustrations? I've always loved illustrated story books, and I would have loved this one as a child, it's just beautiful. The story itself is sweet, a little bunny falling asleep and dreaming of finding a shooting star and carrying it home in a jar, while their parent (I don't want to assume it's the mother, it could be a father too) reassures them that no matter how far away they are, they are always loved. This would make a lovely baby shower gift! |
A heartwarming, sweet and small bedtime lullaby. Accompanied by dreamy watercolor pictures, this is a perfect read for parents with young children. The parent and baby bunny create an illustrated story that is tender and definitely adorable. A recommended book for all young readers. |
I'm not crying over Children's picture book... (yes I am) It was so beautiful; the story, the illustrations, the lullaby. And it's self-published! Your Light would have been a favorite of mine as a child. I have always loved bedtime storybooks the most. I will most definitely be purchasing a copy for myself. 💕💫 Thank you for giving me the opportunity to find this little gem. 💖 |

Oh, so sweet! I love the lullaby, so gentle and peaceful. The illustrations were so cozy! Good bedtime read for little ones. |
I am always on a quest for a perfect bedtime book or a lullaby. Your Light is a lovely story of a little rabbit and his Mum with beautiful watercolour illustrations and a gentle and soothing lullaby song. Mummy Rabbit is tucking her little baby in, while he is dreaming of a shooting star and following it to its landing place, picking it and bringing it home in a glass jar. His Mum’s love will always be there no matter how far he chooses to go to follow his dreams. You really need to listen to the song in order to appreciate this book. The melody is soft and sweet and is sure to have a calming effect on your little one. The artwork is gorgeous. You can see straightaway the authors of the book poured their soul into this story. Thank you to NetGalley and the authors for the advanced copy provided in exchange for an honest opinion. |
I was pleasantly surprised by Your Light by Jillian Aversa and illustrated by Marina Lezcano. A request made due to the unique nature of being a musical story, I was incredibly curious to see how such a book was written. And while I had my doubts, especially considering the book was in a PDF format and I had no understanding for how the music would transfer over at the time, I really did enjoy this book at the end of the day. There's certainly room for some improvement, I think, but for the most part it was an incredibly cute and intriguing bedtime story for kids. The story follows a young rabbit headed to sleep at the end of the day when a shooting star falls from the sky. The little rabbit makes the decision, then, to strike out and search for the star to keep it for himself. Thus begins a vividly beautiful journey through which the rabbit travels to the star and collects it up into a glass jar. The majority of the story is told through the most gorgeous of illustrations whereas the text is merely the lyrics of the song. As far as the song goes, it's generally pretty hard to pick up on it by simply reading the story. You don't have the tune to go off of and it's not a well-known one that you can guess at. I feel like a fair amount is lost if you're simply reading the story without listening to the song and so the fact that the song isn't readily available within the book (as a CD or a small speaker that plays it at the push of a button) does take away a little bit from the story. What's nice, however, is that the website is easily accessible and the song is available via a youtube video in which they show the pages from the story as it sings. You can also download your own free copy, which is nice, especially in the possible (but probably not super likely) event that the website potentially is taken down at some point in the future. Overall, I did really like the book, but it definitely does need the song alongside it. I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. |
