It has been awhile since I have read a book from this series. I am behind on the series but I didn't feel like I had to read the series up to this point.
Eve Duncan is a forensic sculptor and she is confronted by a Journalist to please go to a small African village. There was a horrible massacre that happened in the town and most of them children in a schoolroom. So she is asked to reconstruct the skulls of the children so the families have closure.
But once Eve gets there she believes that Jill tricked her to uncover something else or someone else.
As Eve meets the Queen of this village things don't seem to be as they appear. The Queen is not happy with Jill and doesn't seem to want Eve there.
There was so much going on and Eve's life seemed to be in danger which upsets her son and her husband. Her husband is an officer of the law and he goes to Africa to be with Eve and find out exactly what is going on.

It's been a while since I have caught up with Eve and Joe and I am glad I did! I read a few of the Eve Duncan series books when they were first out and somewhere along the reading path, kind of forgot how much I enjoyed Johansen's writing style, as well as Eve and Joe themselves. I am thankful to delve back into this series and loved this book!
This fast paced thriller has an exotic setting that is war torn, tumultuous, and heart breaking. Even if you are not a prior reader, you will not feel left behind and will catch on quickly. A very solid mystery/thriller that I read quickly. Great addition to the series.

I haven't read a lot in the Eve Duncan series so when characters are bought up it takes some time for new readers to remember who they are. The story starts off heart breaking but soon readers are on a non stop rid that will keep readers wanting ore even after 25 books in the Eve series.

The author introduces new characters in the series or at least this readers hopes they will become part of the series.

The story keeps readers on their toes with how the characters are able to evolve and become read to those fans of the series.

The characters grow, develop, they are they stay stagnant as they find the truth in every single book even when the truth isn't what they were looking for. The Passion that Eve and the other characters are able to bring the story to feel real.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher Grand Central Publishing for the advance copy of Iris Johansen Smokescreen.

Journalist Jill Cassidy shows up on Eve Duncan's doorstep with a plea for help about a small African village where half of the villagers have been massacred by gorilla soldiers.

Eve is not happy that Jill has not been totally honest with her. But once she sees where the massacre happened and that most the victims where children she knows that she has to stay. And as usual when Joe discovers the truth behind everything he goes wherever Eve is and will do whatever he has to do to keep her safe

Eve Duncan has once again put her life in danger, trying to prove a deadly guerilla soldier is still alive. I was pretty shocked that she wasn't surprised that everyone in her family had something come up during the same month. In my house if it's too good to be true it usually is.

Although I wasn't surprised by that, I actually found the novel to be quite the page-turner. The intrigue of proving the soldier wasn't the skeleton they had kept me guessing until the very end.

It was really fantastic to read this book! We know, between the synopsis and the prologue, that there's something more to the trip to Africa than was originally presented. I loved delving into the mystery, it was fascinating and horrifying!

This book was a bit different, in that we got portions of this book narrated by Jill, well, focused on her instead of Eve. I enjoyed meeting her, she was a pretty interesting character, because her skill is the story. She was very tenacious and a pretty good investigator!

There's this one casual update that we got in this book that made me go like, NO! WHHHHHY? I hoped for better than that! I really hope we get another, more positive update, or another book there, because I'm kinda traditional, at least there!

The bad guys in this book, yeah, they're some of the most horrible. I mean, children were slaughtered which is how Jill was able to convince Eve to come. I really enjoyed how they planned to defeat them, and how it went right and how it went wrong, it was so intense and great to read!

Yeah, another fantastic book in this series, and I can't wait for more!

Another great book with How & Eve! I love these characters and their travels! You could read this as a standalone for the most part. While some background is nice, the story stands on its own very well.

Iris Johansen is a fantastic author who just gets better with each book. Her characters are well developed and the storyline is fantastic. A must read for the year.

Another fast paced Eve book. I still cant like her dialogue but the stories are fun. Ok stand alone. Not much of Joe or the fam in this installment.

Forensic sculptor Eve Duncan finds herself agreeing to travel to Africa to help a total stranger who comes begging for assistance identifying the victims of a guerilla attack. The work will be brutal, many of the dead are just children, but Eve knows all to well what it feels like to not know what has happened to your child. Still, when Eve arrives in a remote village, she begins to believe the woman who asked for her help had another, far less idealistic goal in mind. Johansen has managed to keep the Eve Duncan storyline fresh for decades now, and this latest foray into Africa gives the series an exciting new spin

This is a tear jerking story by Iris Johansen. It is probably the Eve Duncan story that goes in the most in-depth about a tragic horror inflicted on children and keeps on going. Every time you think that you can't discover something more horrific, Iris Johansen reveals more to the story that makes it even worse. For example, learning about the deaths of the children in Robaku and then learning more about Zahra's involvement.

The introduction of new characters and intertwining them with old characters were done really well. There is a great amount of evolution of the characters, especially when it comes to Dalia, Zahra's servant. I was disappointed though to learn about Caleb's and Jane Maguire's relationship. I was hoping to learn more about it since it was a relationship that spanned several books before they finally came together.

Varak, the antagonist of the story, is written very well. The longer the story goes on the more of how villainous he is comes out. He is definitely a self-serving villain who does not care about anyone else, but himself, which makes him the perfect character for the story.

The story itself, moves at a quick pace and continues that pace until the very end. There is not a dull moment, especially once Eve Duncan and Jill Cassidy, a reporter, meet.

The story is well written and filled with great detail. Iris Johansen does a wonderful job at providing detailed back stories for Maldara/Robaku, Varak, Gideon, Jill Cassidy, and especially Zahra. I am curious to see if we hear any more about Jill Cassidy and what she discovers about Zahra's Egyptian family history in a future book.

Rating: 5 out of 5. I highly recommend you read this book and don't worry if you have not read the Eve Duncan books before this one. Iris Johansen provides enough back story of the Eve Duncan characters at the beginning of the story that you will not feel lost.
