Damon cupped her face, his serious gaze searching hers. “It’s okay to be scared. It’s when you don’t feel fear anymore that you need to worry.”
Trigger warnings:
- Violence and brutal deaths.
- The threat of rape and attempted sexual assault.
I must admit, alien erotica is my guilty pleasure – anyone who looks through my ‘read’ list on Goodreads will see that. This is my first time reviewing one though, so this might be interesting!
Melody is participating in a game named ‘The Virgin Hunt Games’, and it’s absolutely what it sounds like – males are hunting down virgins in an arena much like ‘The Hunger Games’. It’s everyone for themselves, and they must survive for seven days while the arena throws one challenge after the other after the participants.
Ten females, the ‘Hunted’, are assigned a male, the ‘Hunter’, and not only do they have to survive the deadly game, but they also must avoid their Hunter for as long as possible.
Let’s not forget this is erotica though, everyone is equipped with a device meant to measure their pleasure, and the more pleasure they have, the more credit goes into their bank account – which is mainly why anyone voluntarily joins these games.
If the Hunted joins with someone other than her assigned male, and on top of that manages to avoid her actual assigned male – she’ll be filthy rich, which is exactly what Melody is planning. She’ll stop at nothing to earn enough credit for her poor family, and she’s determined to leave with as much credit as possible.
This world is starved for entertainment, and to make things interesting these games were born. Millions of viewers are watching the participants fuck and kill each other on screen – all while the Hunted and the Hunters fatten up their bank account.
In a lot of erotica, I find the main female character to be dumber than a piece of bread. That was not the case for Melody. She’s badass, can think for herself, and absolutely know how to fight and survive. Like everyone else, she might need help from others, and she’s not free from trauma that renders her frozen a few times, but in general, she’s intelligent and able to stay calm in pressing situations. She also knows exactly what she wants, and she’s not denying it.
The consented sex scenes were hot as fuck and different enough each time to keep it interesting. Melody and Damon was an awesome match, and they complement each other perfectly.
I found the balance between dominance, jealousy, and protectiveness quite pleasing. It wasn’t too much, but not too little either – at least when it came to Melody and Damon.
I do wish we could have seen more of the arena because it seemed fascinating. There were diverse levels, and all none of the levels were like the next. It was dangerous and deadly, and I absolutely felt the urgency the characters felt to get to somewhere safe before nightfall – which was basically freezing and pitch black. At times I were so invested I almost said out loud “No, you don’t have time for sex now, it’s too dangerous!” No shame.
My two issues were mainly the info dump in the first few chapters. It was a bit too much information before the game started. I felt was a bit unnecessary, but I liked the fact that the rules about the game were explained before the participants entered the arena.
The second issue was that I felt the ending was a bit rushed. Everything suddenly happened very fast and left me with a little bit of anticlimax feeling – I thought to myself “Well, that was easy”. I honestly think the book could gain from being a few chapters longer to fade out the last happenings a bit more naturally.
While I manage to separate reality from books and enjoy the stories for what they are – a story – I must say that not everyone might feel this way about this book. I know consent is a touchy theme for many, so that’s why I’m adding this paragraph to my review.
Personally, I am usually not too bothered about difficult themes in stories, but I don’t recommend that you read this one if you have issues with blurred lines of consent and attempted sexual assault as a result. Everything that happens in this book is for the entertainment of those watching the show, and if you find that repulsive you should stay clear.
Otherwise, if you don’t care too much and want to read about sexy aliens fucking and fucking some more while also trying to stay alive for seven days, I say go for it!
