What a great book was enthralled from start to finish . Mia is washed up on a beach what happened to her . Mia can’t remember, she has amnesia . How do you get on with your life when you can’t remember anything about it who you are who your friends or enemies are . Plenty to keep you hooked in this book . Love this Author can’t wait for the next book. |
Definitely a gripping book which made you want to keep reading even when your eyes are almost shutting! . I liked the use of a first person narrative voice and the use of the present tense, which means that we can only know what the narrator knows (or chooses to share). Good page turner with an unexpected ending what more can you want! |
Mia finds herself unable to remember anything after an accident. Her boyfriend comes to pick her up from the hospital, and introduces her back into her life, but while she hopes something will trigger her memory, nothing does, and she discovers her life is far more complicated than she could have imagined. I saw the twist in this one coming, but that didn't interfere with my enjoyment of the book. I think that's one sign of a well-written thriller, actually, to be able to provide an enjoyable ride even for those who figured it out, because they're invested in the characters and the world you created for them. Well done! |

Mia washes up on shore and doesn't know how she ended up there. Plus, she has no idea who she is! I've read other similar novels with the amnesia premise so it's definitely not a new concept. However, I was eager to turn the pages to see how this was going to play out. I can say the ending was definitely unexpected! Ms. Boland's writing is so good! This was a very quick and easy read for me. |
This is the second book that I have read by Shalini Boland and I loved both of them immensely! Shalini knows how to write a thriller that keeps the reader engaged and wanting more! I am going to be reading all of her books because she is that good of an author! |
Okay, so, sadly I didn’t like this book. I couldn’t relate to the main character and found her slightly irritating and dull. If I were to develop amnesia, I would spend more time trying to resolve/understand it. Instead, our narrator wants to hop into a new relationship (after breaking up with someone the night before) and get fixated on this new man to a point that she’s virtually a stalker. She talks about moving away to have a fresh start but doesn’t want to leave her newfound “friendship” behind when she’s only known him for two days? She can’t even remember her life less than a week ago! I found her attitude unrealistic in light of what’s happened to her and she seems to overtly ignore the red flags highlighted within the story. Still, I don’t mind disliking a character in a novel, but so much just seemed illogical in light of what she was experiencing that I just couldn’t relate at all. The narrator spends an inordinate amount of time describing various aspects of her surroundings which gets confusing when the pages are littered with paragraph after paragraph of detail—it doesn’t drive the story, is a distraction and makes it feel contrived. On several occasions, some of the descriptions gave me pause to actually consider if it made sense, which really interrupted the flow of the story. For example, the author at times describes the scent of things; she mentions the smell of water, old socks and salt on separate occasions, none of which have a specific smell, as far as I can tell. I’ll admit I pondered the old socks one for a bit, but wasn’t sure what that metaphor was trying to elicit. The narrative felt disjointed as a result. I think the author missed an opportunity to develop the protagonist into someone three-dimensional and to make the story more suspenseful—the mystery would only improve with more edge and a bit more structure. The story was slow to develop and picked up pace about 70% in... Unfortunately, this one missed the mark for me. Thank you to Publisher Adrenalin Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review. |
This one was just okay for me. The writing is good and the plot is interesting. However, I didn't connect with any character and I felt it was lacking in suspense because it was easy for me to figure things out. I had a hard time getting into it, but it does pick up towards the middle. I would be willing to try this author again. |
Wow, what a fantastic read. I love Shalina Boland’s books and I think this one was her best yet. Mia is found washed up on a beach with a head wound. She is taken to hospital but can’t remember her name or anything about her life and doesn’t even recognise her reflection in the mirror. After publicity, Piers turns up at the hospital and says Mia is his girlfriend. Mia doesn’t recognise him and when he takes her home nothing look familiar. Mia starts to have flashbacks and begins to think she was a victim of foul play. Who is the mysterious woman she keeps having nightmares about and also thinks she sees her in real life? She gradually realises that Piers has lied to her and that they had split up before her accident, so ends their relationship. Whilst on a walk she arrives at a rowing club and remembers that this was something she used to do. She talks to Jack, a rowing coach, and finds that she is attracted to him. She begins to rely on him to help her remember things but then another woman’s body is found along with an abandoned boat, and the police realise that Mia was a victim of foul play. Mia then has to think who would have attempted to harm her. I wont go into any more details about the book but prepare yourself for a jaw dropping twist at the end. I totally loved this book, probably one of my favourite reads of the year. Highly recmmended. Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book. |
‘I can’t remember anything. Not even my own name.’ When Mia James is washed up on a beautiful, sun-drenched beach she has no idea who she is or what happened to her. She doesn’t even recognize her own face – until a man comes forward claiming to be her boyfriend and providing her with an identity. As Mia tries to adjust to the perfect life she was living before her accident, she quickly realizes that something is wrong. Why is everyone around her lying to her? What don’t they want her to remember? This is a brilliantly addictive read. It grabbed me from the beginning and didn’t let go. I really enjoyed the story line, it was dark and sinister and you never really knew who to trust! Also, that ending!! I honestly didn't see it coming. I thought it was a great plot twist and can see how it can be compared to Gone Girl. This is a fabulous book, the whole premise so intriguing - what would it be like if you lost your memory and couldn't even recognize yourself, let alone remember why you have distanced yourself from family. Shalini Boland’s characters come alive in this book. So many surprises until the final page! I can’t wait for her next book! HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for a digital copy of this book. |
# The girl from the sea # Netgalley I am a fan of Shalini Boland and have enjoyed ever book I have read of her. However I did enjoy this book, but truthfully not as much as her others. I have been trying to find the right words, it’s difficult, because it’s a well executed book, interesting storyline. It just didn’t grab me on some ways her other novels have. At the end I felt a little bit disappointed ☹️ which is very unusual for me from this author. |
Mia James has been found unconscious on a beach in Christchurch, Bournemouth, England. The only problem is that she doesn't remember who she is or how she came to be there. The doctor tells her she has retrograde amnesia and her memories will be back once she familiarises herself with everything in the past, but it can take time. Her boyfriend Piers helps her initially but she soon meets others and realises things not right and that something's been kept from her. When she finally thinks maybe everything will turn out okay, that's when it all collapses. What's going to happen next? Is she who she thinks she is? The plot was good and had potential but the over all tone of the book was flat. I never felt like Mia was in a hurry to know her past and everything that was revealed was very slow leading to an abrupt ending. It was as if the author stretched one line to a whole 300 page book. The fact that she has to figure out everything from scratch was both what made this book interesting as well as a downer - while the suspense from just that was kept me reading, it made the characterisation weak and boring. There's only so much we can spend time inside her head with doubts and questions before we want the answers. There was no urgency or any scary situations baring a flash of repeated memory that makes you hooked to the book and so the whole experience of reading it was like eating food without seasonings. Not a book I would want to start with for this author. for more please visit www.bibliogyan.com |
I’m hard to please with psychological thrillers, but this one is definitely one of the better ones I’ve read recently! Quick and easy, well-written, and the ending...did not disappoint! I wanted to keep following Mia’s story to see what happened next. I will definitely check out more by this author! |
The Girl from the Sea by Shalini Boland is another wonderful book by this author. I remember reading this when it first came out and enjoyed reading it again. This is a standalone psychological thriller that will have you gripped from the first few pages with so many twists and turns. It's a brilliant read. A young woman wakes up on a beach with waves tumbling over her. Very disoriented and has no idea of who she is or where she is. She is discovered by a woman walking her dog and an ambulance is called, She is taken to hospital to be checked over. So many questions and no memory on who she is? Has she got family? How did she get there? Has she got a partner? So many questions she can not answer............... Highly Recommend Shalini's Book.....Excellent author. ** Thank you to Publisher Adrenalin Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review. ** Reviews on Amazon UK and Goodreads. Plus purchased for a family member. |
I am a fan of Shalini Boland's work so was looking forward to reading The Girl From the Sea, once again Shalini has delivered a great read and a mystery I really enjoyed trying to figure out. I really enjoy a good memory loss plot, and this was a good one. Mia is desperate to remember what happened to her and how she ended up washed up on a beach. I felt Mia was quite a lonely character which makes it more difficult to piece together what happened. She doesn't remember her boyfriend and he tries to help her put her life back together. If you like a twisty mystery with a solid plot, this is the book for you. |
I absolutely love Shalini Boland - she is my favourite author at the moment. This wasn’t the best I have read, but it was a solid 4! Mia was highly annoying at times, and parts of the book were a bit too descriptive - almost like she was fattening up the book. The storyline was good, but there were still some bits unanswered for me. The twist was good, I didn’t know how it was going to end, but it was a little unbelievable, That said, I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it hard to put down. |
I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley. Summary: What would you do if you woke up on the beach, with no memory of your life or who you are? This happens to Mia James one morning. No matter how hard she tries, she just can't remember anything from before the accident. Her handsome boyfriend, Piers, comes to claim her, and gives her some information about who she is. She's apparently rich, with a beautiful house and no need to work. She also loves rowing above everything else. But is her life as great as it seems? . . . Review: Sometimes I like to go into reading books blind, without much background information. I was pleasantly surprised with this book! Mia, after her accident, doesn't seem to understand why she had made some of the choices she did. Why is she dating Piers when he is so obnoxious? Why hasn't she spoken to her family in three years? Why does her neighbor seem to hate her? This book made me think about what would happen to me if I lost my memory. Would I be happy with what I found out about my life, or would I be extremely disappointed in myself? This was a quick read and was really good! I would definitely recommend! |
Thanks to Netgalley for the advanced copy... Wow!! That’s really good! Looking forward to read more book this year hopefully... |
A woman is found, washed ashore, barely breathing and unconscious, having almost drowned in the sea. On recovery, she has no recollection of what happened, and even who she is. She cannot even remember what she looks like. She is identified as Mia James, by her boyfriend, Piers Bevan-Price. Piers is handsome, confident and rich. He pieces together bits of Mia’s life for her and she is overwhelmed by the life she apparently was leading. She doesn’t trust Piers completely though. He seems shady, and dominating. As she tries to put pieces of her life together, she realises that the only thing she knows is that she likes to row. And she also has a crush on the rowing coach, Jack. Not being able to rely on Piers, she decides to take control over her life and starts making efforts to get to know herself more. As Mia discovers more of her life before drowning, she comes across more questions that remain unanswered. Compounded with the disturbing recurring nightmares in which she sees an angry woman approaching her, Mia is unsure if her drowning was an accident or an attempt to murder. Will Mia ever regain her memory, or will she eventually start a fresh life? Fast-paced and gripping, I finished it in one sitting. I could guess a part of the twist. I particularly didn’t like the ending – and wished Mia’s character would have been shown in a different light at the end. |

I discovered that I have reviewed this book before. Here is my review. Mia is washed up on a beach with no memory. Who can she trust? Who are her friends? This book is very cleverly written with an ending I did not see coming. I thought right up until the last few pages that I had worked out the ending. This book is definitely worth reading. |
A woman wakes up having washed ashore on a beach in Dorset. Her mouth is full of salt water and she is coughing. Where is she? A woman walking her dog finds her and calls 999. She can’t remember her name, where she’s from, or how she got in the water. When she’s examined at the hospital, the doctor calls her condition retrograde amnesia. After running tests, she appears to be OK. The police get a call from someone reporting a missing person who looks like her and says she is Mia James. The name doesn’t sound familiar to her. The person looking for he is Piers Bevan-Price and he says he is Mia’s boyfriend. When he comes to the hospital, she doesn’t recognize him, but he is a handsome man and obviously wealthy. He takes her to her home which is very nice and located near the beach. She learns more about herself from Piers, yet even walks around her town don’t seem to jog her memory. She does have some dreams that seem like flashbacks, but she doesn’t know what they mean. Piers seems to irritate her and she just wants time to herself. In her walks around, she sees people rowing and is drawn to it. A man named Jack says he knows her and tells her she had been part of a rowing club. Day by day, Mia learns more about her past. Will she ever fully recover her memory? This book dragged through a lot of it. Repetitive and flat. Mia comes across as a bit of a twit without a lot of common sense. However, it wasn’t until the ending that things really came alive and shocked me. If you can stick with the middle of the book, you will find you really like it. Enjoy!
